Dear Parents,

Good news!

I am happy and proud to announce that we have reached our 500,000 Euros target for the proposed AISB Design and Engineer-ing Centre – the pos-itive response from within and without our community has been simply extraordinary. The first main draft of the plans for this build-ing, three versions thereof, are on display in the atrium. Stop and look; your feedback and input is welcome.

More good news …

The crossing light outside the school is now functional. It has taken a while, but now it is operational - the green light switches ON, 5 seconds after the button is pushed. We have asked the Voluntari Police to still send an agent at our peak times, for the next week or, until the drivers using Pipera Boulevard get used to slowing and stopping at these lights. So, please still be careful when crossing and especially edu-cate your children to pay attention and push the button for the green light.

The new guardhouse for the Early Learning Centre (ELC) is now operational. Similar to the device mounted at the main entrance to the school campus, we have installed a license-plate recognition system for the double-gated en-try. Thus, you will be able to have automatic entrance to the ELC road and carpark, as long as your vehicle is registered in our database – please contact Catalina Gardescu ([email protected]) if this is not the case.

'A Little History of Economics' by Niall Kishtainy

Thanks to John Kurtenbach, in the Secondary School library, who regularly gives me something different to read, ‘A little History of Economics’, by Niall Kishtainy, is a welcome insight into how the concept of ‘money’ evolved over time. It is a great, easy read and gives some perspective as to how the theories of economics developed. Perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, but for those interested, it is a good insight into the relationship between poverty and capitalism. Particularly relevant these days, due to the rising disparity of wealth around the world. As the Guardian newspaper reported last year, ‘the richest 0.1% of the world’s population (7 million) have increased their combined wealth by as much as the poorest 50% – or 3.8 billion people – since 1980’.

Upcoming University Fairs in Bucharest

Grade 8 Humanities Community Outreach Project - Bring in your Old Electronics

• Who - All teachers, students, and parents• What - Reclaiming of old small to medium size electronics that do not work any-

more or you just need to get rid of them. (Some examples are: TVs, computer monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, circuit boards, lamps, clocks, flashlight, calculators, phones, answering machines, digital/video cameras, radi-os, VCRs, DVD players, MP3 and CD players.)

• When - this week and next week• Where - Atrium beside the ATM machine• Why - Because e-waste is very dangerous for the environment and finite resourc-

es can be extracted from old electronics. We have been contacted by Ms. Marion Siekierski, the liaison between AISB and Eco-School, and the initiative of the Eco-Schools Programme and Ms. Marion has asked us about an E-waste Drive and if we wanted to do one. The reason for doing such a drive is to dispose of the waste in a proper manner, we are going to ask the company of Sigurec to take care of the actual recirculation of the materials found in the electronics, Sigurec is a quite well-known company that specializes in the business of recycling items. You can read more about Sigurec here: http://sigurec.ro/en

Season 2 of ’13 Reasons Why’: The Controversy ContinuesNiki B. | February 26, 2018

One of the most popular and controversial shows of 2017 is coming yet again for the sec-ond season– none other than

the Netflix Original, 13 Reasons Why.

The TV series revolves around Hannah Baker, a high school student who committed suicide due to a troubled life. The show features 13 tapes that Hannah made before ending her life, dedicated to 13 people whom she considers to have led her to that fateful decision.

According to the Journal of American Medicine, the debut of the show led to an increase of suicide in 2017. But is...READ MORE...

Brexit: What does it mean for students wanting to study in the UK?Ioana T. | February 8, 2018

On June 23rd 2016, the United Kingdom successfully passed a vote withdrawing from the Euro-pean Union. Over thirty million

people took part in the vote, and the outcome resulted in much controversy.

The UK’s actual withdrawal from the EU is expected to take place on March 23, 2019. There will be (and have already been) numerous implications of Brexit, one of which af-fects both EU students wanting to study in the UK as well as UK students wanting to study in the EU.

Which Language Should You Be Learning?Toyosi A. | February 15, 2018

A student stares coldly at a block of text. The bitter aftertaste of coffee lingers on their tongue, their shoulders slumped, head pounding, and eyes strained

from attempting to understand what they were reading. Frustrated, the student turns to an old yet reliable friend that goes by the name “Google Translate.”

Sound familiar?

This is a common story for international students studying a foreign language. You, my dear reader, are also probably studying another language – either inside or outside of school. (Maybe you’re even procrastinating by reading...

Standardized Testing: Good or Bad?Naomi S. | February 12, 2018

In the US, students take approxi-mately 112 mandatory standard-ized tests before they finish high school. According to an article in the Washington Post, these tests

consume about 25 hours each year (a total of 300 hours throughout 12 years of school). These tests will either get graded purely based on students’ knowledge of one year regarding a specific subject, or they will assess how much they’ve learned cumulatively.

Online, the definition for a standardized test varies, but the core essential definition is that to be considered standard-ized, “the exams need to not only contain the same infor-mation, but they need to also be graded in exactly the...

Personal Project ExhibitionPersonal Project is the culminating event in the MYP; a chance for our Grade 10 students to showcase all of the skills that they have gained throughout the program by following a personal passion. These projects range from scientific pursuits in technology to raising awareness about particular social issues that they are concerned with. Throughout this half-year independent project, students work with a supervisor who helps steer them towards success, but the final result is truly a testament of the students’ self-management skills; their motivation to produce and work on a self-directed project for a considerable amount of time outside of the classroom environment.

The 2017-2018 Grade 10 class took on the challenge of Personal Project and had the usual ups and downs that go into a long term project; they procrastinated, they hit roadblocks, they thought they might never get there, but in the end… they pulled it off! The vibe in the library and atrium on February 12th and 13th was noticed throughout the school and our community. Our Grade 10s put together a student display that was truly exemplary. The pic-tures here only give a glimpse of the hard work put in by our students and only a smattering of the diversity of projects. And that was the piece that kept being heard: “Wow, these stu-dents really followed their passions!” And they could really talk about them! Whether focus-ing on women empowerment or how music can transcend cultures, our students created an event and displayed projects that will be remembered by our community for years to come.

As proud as we all are of our Grade 10 students undertaking their individual personal jour-neys with so many successes, that was only part of this overall success. There was a much bigger school-wide effect, as reverberations were felt throughout the school, especially by our younger students. Students talking about what they want to do for their Personal Proj-ect in Grade 10, students who already started creating mini-versions of projects they saw at Exhibition, students getting excited about taking on their own learning… students feeling empowered! We have our impressive Grade 10 students, and their projects, to thank for this movement, this energy. And we can all look forward to our students stepping up and step-ping out to take on more of their own initiatives as empowered learners!

Dear AISB community,

The biggest event of the year for the PTO is approaching rapidly: the 21st Annual AISB Auction Gala! This year’s theme is “Masquerade Night” and March 24th promises to be a night of fun, mystery and fund raising. The Gala co-chairs, Deb Christian and Dawn Kovacs, along with their amazing volunteers have been hard at work putting together a night you won’t forget. We would also take a moment to send a huge THANK YOU to all of the sponsors of this event; we could not do this without your support.

If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet you should make your way to the Atrium any day at dismissal time. Seats are selling quickly; you don’t want to miss out.

Please also visit the Gala webpage at http://gala.aisb.ro for all the latest news and information on the items that will be available for both the silent and live auctions. This event is so very important to our community as it provides support for the Scholarship fund as well as other PTO grants that are given to students and members of the community to enhance learning all over the school. These funds really make a difference in so many lives.

As always, we are also busy with meetings and events that bring our community together. To welcome new families, an informal coffee was held before the February break and we hope to continue to wel-come new people as they join AISB.

I hope the February break gave you a chance to catch your breath because the last few months of the school year will go by quickly.

Regards,Sian Ashenden

Cesar Millan Live - Once Upon a Dog

Sala Palatului, Bucuresti, Strada Ion Câmpineanu, nr. 28Sunday, April 1st at 8pm

With over 25 years of experience, the renowned canine behavior and psy-chology expert, Cesar Millan, will return to Bucharest on April 1st at Sala Palatului after his sold out, hypnotizing show in 2017.

Throughout his career, he has earned many prizes and his series "Dog Whis-perer with Cesar Millan" was nominated for the Emmy's three times. The show was produced in 2012 and has been broadcasted in over 80 countries around the world. Similarly, Millan's books are available in 14 countries and more than 2 million copies have been sold thus far. Together with Illusion Mil-lan, his ex-wife, he founded the Millan Foundation, currently operated as the CesarMillan PACK Project. The foundation was founded to provide financial support to shelters and organizations that save, rehabilitate, and find homes for abused or abandoned animals.

Although the techniques of the famous trainer are often criticized, he has managed to improve the health of the dogs with which he has worked, elim-inated their aggression, and brought harmony between them and their own-ers. The "Cesar Millan LIVE Once Upon a Dog Tour 2018" show will be the most interesting and emotional show of his career. Find out more and get your tickets here: www.iabilet.ro

British Theatre on the big screen at Happy Cinema

Happy Cinema București welcomes spring with two recent seasons of classical theatre, filmed on London stages and featuring British casts. Find out more here: https://www.happycinema.ro/

Twelfth Night opens the The Royal Shakespeare Company season at Happy Cinema and is scheduled for Saturday, the 3rd of March 2018, at 4 P.M. Christopher Luscombe, an experienced director, returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to tackle Shake-speare’s greatest comedy, a brilliantly bittersweet account of "the whirligig of time". Twelfth Night is a tale of unrequited love – hilar-ious andheartbreaking. Two twins are separated in a shipwreck, and forced to fend for themselves in a strange land.

A Woman of No Importance will be filmed at the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End and screened at Happy Cinema Bucuresti on the 24th of February, starting from 5 o'clock P.M. Olivier award-winner Eve Best and BAFTA-nominated actress Anne Reid star in this new classically staged production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy directed by Dominic Dromgoole, former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe.
