MAC NEWSTHE
Dear Brothers,
The Montgomery Alumni Chapter has not had a physical meeting since
March 8, 2020 because of the coronavirus (COVID-19). All fraternity
activities have been canceled or postponed until further notice. I hope
and pray that each of you and your families are safe and healthy.
Two Brothers have entered the Chapter Invisible since our last meeting.
Brother Donald Wilder, who crossed the burning sands in the
Montgomery Alumni Chapter held the office of Assistant Keeper
Exchequer for many years. And Daran “ Spud” Gaskin Sr. who pledged
at Gamma Phi. Let’s keep their families in our prayers.
Also, three Brothers, Polemarch Legand Burge, Vice Polemarch Darold
Boswell and Brother John Baker were admitted and released from the
hospital during the month of April. Join me in keeping them in your
prayers as well.
Included on the following pages you will see IHQ’s response to COVID-
19. Also, enjoy the highlights in this newsletter from the fourth quarter
2019 through first quarter of 2020. Our Chapter continues to do great
work and enjoy fellowship in the name of Phi Nu Pi.
Thanks to all of the Brothers who contributed to this newsletter by

Montgomery Alumni Chapter (MAC) Founders' Day 2020
The MAC celebrated the 109th founding of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. with several
fun and entertaining activities spread throughout the month of January. This year's
theme was "Brother to Brother, Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges." While the highlight
of the celebration was the closed banquet awards program, the month began with a
birthday party bash.
The MAC kicked off the month-long Founders' Day Celebration with the annual J 5
Birthday celebration. Brothers from all over Montgomery, active and reclamation
eligible, joined in the celebration. Polemarch Legand Burge welcomed everyone, and
Reclamation Chairman Robert Banks invited inactive brothers to "Come Home to
Kappa". Our beloved Brother and 11th Founder, Dr. Ralph J. Bryson gave a brief history
of the fraternity and the loving cup ceremony. The evening culminated with "The Loving
Cup Ceremony."
The celebration continued January 10th, with the Kappa Card Game Night. We had
poker and blackjack tables, spades games and dominoes. There was lots of food,
music, and drinks. Most of all, there were Brothers and lots of guests having a great
time. The night was sponsored by the Reclamations and Fraternal Activities
committees.
The MAC Biennial Closed Founders' Day Awards Banquet was held January 17, at the
Capital City Club, in downtown Montgomery. We were honored to have the Senior
Grand Vice Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Brother Linnes Finney Jr.,
Esq., serve as our speaker for the evening. Brothers from chapters throughout the
River Region were hosted by Brother Ennis J. McCorvey, III, who presided over an
evening of food, fun, fellowship, recognition, inspiration and rededication. Awards and
recognitions included:
Citizen of the Year: Honorable Steven Reed, Mayor, Montgomery, AL
Polemarch's Award: Sedric Wright
Kappa Man of the Year: Robert Banks
50 Year Members: Polemarch Legand Burge, Henry Johnson, and Michael
Woodard

55th Anniversary Of The March On Selma, Alabama
Writeup Submitted By: Polemarch Legand Burge
The Montgomery Alumni Chapter (MAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was proud to
host Grand Polemarch, Reuben A. Sheldon III, Esq., Past Grand Polemarch's, and staff
members of the Fraternity’s International Headquarters (IHQ) on the occasion of the
weekend of February 29 through March 1, 2020, of the 55th Anniversary of the March on
Selma. MAC hosted a reception and greeting event at the Renaissance Hotel and Spa inMontgomery, Alabama. All Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., attendees are attached.
Salute Selma, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, invited the National Executive Board
of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (Divine Nine) to participate on sacred ground at
Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the sacrifices and success of scores of black women
and men from around the country for Selma’s 55th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the
Selma to Montgomery March and the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 during the
Annual 55th Bridge Crossing Commemoration. All participants met on March at Selma High
School for a Ecumenical Service featuring Bishop Vashti McKenzie as the Ecumenical
pastor. The leadership of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., chose to participate with the
black women of the Nation who led the Historic Reenactment March across Edmund
Pettus Bridge, and to address, coordinate and develop action strategies on matters of
mutual concern to affiliate organizations and to serve as the conduit for such action plans,
and join the group for the bridge crossing. The attendance at the March on Selma grew
well over 20,000 for this historic rally for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. participation and
to join with the National Pan-Hellenic Council along with other national influential,
preeminent African-American organizations and their leadership to commemorate the 55th
Anniversary of the March on Selma, Alabama.
Prominent figures at the rally included all of the presidential candidates, the Georgia
Representative John Lewis, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and the Alabama 7th District
Representative Terri Sewell. Indeed, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. joined thousands of
influential African Americans in the fields of politics, entertainment, education and
entrepreneurship to address issues occurring in our nation, and how we must respond.
Grand Polemarch Sheldon visited presidential candidate forums of those available at the
March.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - State Senator David Burkette is opening up
about his personal health battle and the effect it’s had on his work. Back in
December Burkette suffered a stroke. In nearly three months he’s made
steady improvements on his road to recovery.
“I couldn’t raise my left leg, I couldn’t turn my feet, I couldn’t lift my arm,
but I can do all of that now," he said. Burkette says he has always
believed in hard work. “Nothing came easy for me in my entire life. I don’t
expect nothing else will,” Burkette said.
It is this mindset he’s used as motivation during this time. “I had a lot to
fight for,” said Burkette. He attributes his success to his family, friends,
and God. “It involves your faith in God that is for sure," he said.
Since the start of the legislative session he’s been balancing his work at
the state house with therapy sessions and doctor appointments. “I have
not missed a session or a committee meeting," said Burkette.
The state senator is hoping his story is a wake up call to others and could
help save lives.
“I was one of the ones who thought I was healthy for my age. A stroke can
happen to anyone, at any time, at any age," said Burkette. "The stroke
didn’t happen to me, but for me so that I can get the awareness out there.”
Tuesday, Burkette was able to help get a resolution passed to recognize
stroke awareness month in May. The senator says he is working on
several bills for this legislative session.
Burkette is a retired educator and former member of the Montgomery City
Council.

MACTHE
Janice Burge, President
To: MAC, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
From: Thelma C. Ivery, Past President, Montgomery Kappa Silhouettes
Subject: Invitation to Kappa Wives to join Montgomery Kappa Silhouettes
Montgomery Kappa Silhouettes are wives of active members of Montgomery Alumni Chapter,
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Our national organization was organized in 1947 and was
officially recognized as “Kappa Silhouette Auxiliary” to the fraternity at the 1980 Grand
Conclave in Atlanta, Georgia. Montgomery Silhouettes were initially organized in 1969, and
we have operated continuously since December 1970.
Among our purposes are:
•To serve as an auxiliary to Montgomery Alumni Kappas,
•To provide opportunities for increased association between wives of Kappas,
•To participate in worthwhile civic, social and cultural activities, and
•To provide activities for visiting Silhouettes who accompany their husbands to Kappa
Province meetings in Montgomery.
Our community service activities have included furnishing the linens for a room in a local
Service Center for Women, providing school supplies for local elementary schools and
sponsoring Thanksgiving dinners for needy families. We are happy to assist Kappas whenever
we are requested to do so.
Some of our fun activities have included: bowling, golf, pokeno, and bingo. We also sponsor an
annual Christmas party for our husbands, and Easter egg hunts for Kappa children and
grandchildren.
Montgomery Kappa Silhouettes would be happy to have your wives join us. We hope that you
will encourage them to do so. Our meetings are on the second Sundays of months from
September through June at 3 p.m. in Kappa House #2.
