Looking at our MB 99 calendar we are as busy as ever as a Chapter. With each of these projects and with upcoming elections for new officers please check your schedules and see which events and/or officer responsibilities you can take on for the Chapter. None of these positions take a lot of time we just need members that will attach the tasks to their names. I have included the two articles from our Bylaws that clarify the elected offices and duties. Jeannie Hendrickson, Election Chair, will be sending out the ballots this month. Please vote and volunteer. Alice

ARTICLE IV

Officers Sec. 1 The elective officers shall consist of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. (A) Officers shall be members in good standing. Sec. 2 Elections (A) Officers shall be elected by a majority vote of ballots received. If no candidate receives a majority, members present at a regular meeting shall elect by a majority of votes from the two candidates receiving the highest num-ber of vote. (B) Candidates for office shall be nominated by a nominating committee of three appointed by the Chairman. (C) Elections shall be held in May with the new officers taking office the third Wednesday in July for a two year term. (D) No officer shall serve more than two consecutive terms in the same office. Sec. 3 The Elective officers of the Chapter shall comprise a Board of Directors, which shall have authority to act in emergencies arising between meetings, said acts to be reported to the next regular meeting of the chapter for ap-proval. Sec. 4 A vacancy in any office by death, resignation or other cause, shall be filled by the Board of Directors, ex-cepting, however, the office of the Chairman, which shall be filled as provided hereinafter in Article V, Sec. 2. Sec. 5 Any officer may be removed from office for neglect of duty. Said removal may be accomplished by the Board of Directors on its own initiative or on demand of two thirds of the active members. ARTICLE V

Duties of Officers Sec. 1 The Chairman shall preside at all Chapter meetings and enforce due observance of the Constitution and By-Laws; see that all officers and members of committees perform their respective duties as enjoined by the laws of the organization; receive and put all motions; appoint all committees, unless otherwise specified; inspect and an-nounce the results of the balloting or other votes by the Chapter; preside at all the meetings of the Board of Direc-tors; and perform such other duties as usually appertain to the office or as otherwise directed by the members in meeting. In case of the absence of any officer at any meeting, the Chairman shall appoint a member in good standing to act for such absent officer. Sec. 2 The Vice Chairman shall assist the Chairman in the performance of her duties; preside at Chapter meetings or meetings of the Board of Directors in case of the absence, resignation or removal from office of the Chairman, and do such duties as may be assigned. Sec. 3 The Secretary shall keep in a file for that purpose, an accurate account of all transactions of the Chapter meetings and meetings of the Board of Directors; write all communications; file all papers and documents pertain-ing to Chapter transactions, issue all notices as directed by the members in meeting or the Chairman; and perform such other duties as usually appertain to the office. Sec. 4 The Treasurer shall receive all monies due the Chapter, giving a receipt for same. She shall pay out the same, only on authorization of the Board of Directors or as directed by the members in meeting. She shall give, when requested by the Chairman, a statement in writing of monies on hand and shall at the June meeting, make a financial report of the year's receipts and expenditures.

Next time you go flying, look down at the airport and the surrounding buildings. You may notice markings pointing to the

airport and will probably see the airport name painted on the field. This program of identifying airports to pilots was started

as the National Air Marking Program. This program was the first U.S. government program conceived, planned and directed

by a woman with an all-woman staff. The program was a part of the Bureau of Air Commerce.

Oops! Correction to April Newsletter.

The answer to question 8 Why is frost considered hazardous to flight? Is not Flash the landing lights and cycle the

landing gear while circling the airport. Frost does not change the basic aerodynamic shape of the wing, but the

roughness of its surface spoils the smooth flow of air, thus causing a slowing of the airflow. This slowing of the

air causes early air flow separation over the affected airfoil, resulting in a loss of lift. Flashing the landing lights

may bring attention to your airplane if near a tower or near other aircraft, unfortunately it’s not going to help the

situation.

I am going to go read my books. And make sure I don’t give you anymore incorrect answers.

The 36th anniversary ceremonies at the International Forest

of Friendship will be held in Atchison on June 15 (Fri) and

16 (Sat), 2012. Honorees will be inducted to join the nearly

1400 individuals who are enshrined along the Forest's path-

ways.

The Forest's overall theme is “World Friendship through Fly-

ing.” Candidates for induction can be anyone who has con-

tributed, or is contributing to all aspects of aviation and aero-

space. Honorees need not be pilots. In 2012, the specific fo-

cus is on “Flying, Forests and the Future.” Candidates are

particularly encouraged who:

have contributed to the promotion of aviation and aero-

space, or who

have helped preserve or explore forests and natural habi-

tats through aviation and aerospace (support of state and

local units fighting forest fires, aerial resource surveys

[domestic or overseas], environmental work, etc.)

A special ceremony will honor Dr. Wangari Maathai, who

graduated from Mt. St. Scholastica College (now Benedic-

tine College) in Atchison in 1964 and who passed away in

September, 2011. She founded the Green Belt Movement,

an environmental non-governmental organization focused on

the planting of trees, environmental conservation, and wom-

en's rights. In 2004, she became the first African woman to

receive the Nobel Peace Prize for "her contribution to sus-

tainable development, democracy and peace."

More information about the Forest, as well as sponsorship,

registration and lodging information, is at the

www.ifof.org website.

The new 2012 FAA VFR aeronautical charts are being updated to

provide additional information for aircraft operations in the vicinity

of Monterey Bay, Channel Islands, Gulf of the Farallones, and Olym-

pic Coast National Marines Sanctuaries. In accordance with existing

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) regula-

tions, flight operations below the charted altitude for each sanctuary

may harass or disturb marine mammals and seabirds and therefore,

violate NOAA regulations (15 CFR Part 922, as amended at 77 FR

3919, Jan. 26, 2012).

The FAA has worked with NOAA to accurately depict the sanc-

tuary boundaries on the affected aeronautical charts and have includ-

ed a notation that references the NOAA regulations. Look for these

additions on the Seattle Sectional, Los Angeles Sectional & Terminal

Area Chart (TAC), San Francisco Sectional & TAC, and World Aero-

nautical Charts (WAC) CF-16 & CG-18 to be released by the FAA in

2012.

Produced by the FAA Safety Briefing editors, http://www.faa.gov/

news/safety_briefing/

The airport's web site is currently undergoing a revamp, but it will

not be ready until late summer. Given that I don't want to wait I've

worked with our Webmaster to provide an interim solution/

functionality which we can carry over to the new site. Please visit

the Watsonville Airport home page (www.watsonvilleairport.com)

and select the "E-mail Distribution List" link if you desire to re-

ceive communications deemed important to our air-

port community.
