US SURGEON GENERAL’S CALL US SURGEON GENERAL’S CALL TO ACTIONTO ACTION
Skin Cancer Prevention is particularly topical as the U.S. Surgeon General just
released a first-ever Call to Action on prevention of skin cancer and melanoma
which defines a public health agenda for all skin cancers. The 102-page report
which outlines key areas of focus, including an emphasis on tanning beds,
sunscreens and filling research gaps. We are using this government-authored
report as an important resource which will help support and drive our missions
to combat skin cancer and melanoma.
“Tan skin is damaged skin.”
- US Surgeon General, RADM Boris Lushniak, MD, MPH
SKIN CANCER CALL TO ACTION SKIN CANCER CALL TO ACTION GOALSGOALS
There are five (5) Call to Action goals in the Executive Summary that provides a valuable springboard around which we can develop strategies to advance our cause:
1.Increase Opportunities for Sun Protection in Outdoor Settings
2.Provide Individuals with the Information They Need to Make Informed, Healthy Choices About UV Exposure
3.Promote Policies that Advance the National Goal of Preventing Skin Cancer
4.Reduce Harms from Indoor Tanning
5.Strengthen Research, Surveillance, Monitoring, and Evaluation Related to Skin Cancer Prevention
NEED TO REVERSE THE TRENDNEED TO REVERSE THE TREND
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United
States. More than three million skin cancers are diagnosed
annually.
It is estimated that one American dies every hour from
skin cancer.
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the
course of a lifetime.
Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the
combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung,
and colon.
Melanoma is the second most common form of cancer for
young adults 15-29 years old
SUNSMARTEST TOWN IN SUNSMARTEST TOWN IN AMERICAAMERICA
VISION: Change behavior to make skin cancer prevention a social norm. This included making the proper application of
sunscreen normal part of people’s daily routine, educating people on how to reduce UV exposure by wearing
the proper clothing and accessories, facilities and administrations should make sun protection messaging and
shade covers available, and instructing all to get regular skin screenings – protect and detect!
SUNSMART COMMUNITIESSUNSMART COMMUNITIES
The Live SunSmart Foundation will advise local governments on how to create SunSmart Communities. We
propose that Montclair be the first SunSmart Community in the Nation with the intent to make Montclair the
“SunSmartest” town in America and use it as the pilot program for other cities and towns to emulate.
This is an excellent opportunity to build a program that can have a tremendous impact on our residents and
attract national media attention.
We hope to gain the full support and cooperation of the US Surgeon General. Additionally, Veronica Stigeler
Cowher (Bill Cowher’s wife) has pledged her support. She is a former Montclair resident and graduate of MHS.
ECOLOGICAL SUPPORTECOLOGICAL SUPPORT
We will need the support
and buy-in from various
groups, departments,
constituents and
stakeholders in town.
BEHAVIORIAL CHANGE BEHAVIORIAL CHANGE LITERATURE REVIEWLITERATURE REVIEW
The most recent scientific literature review conducted points to the fact that a variety of messages should be incorporated into intervention programs to dovetail with the variety of stages of behavior change to
be found within any particular year of age (Kristjansson et al, 2004). Olson et al (2007) also emphasize the
importance of an ecological approach to intervention through creation of programs that involve
residents, parents and caregivers, teachers and coaches, school administrators and trainers, health and wellness
advocates, the business community, media and the support of the local community at-large through repeated
awareness and educational messaging within our living environment.
Interventions that have been designed in this way have shown more promise in lasting behavior
change.
