Catlin Arctic Survey, delivered by Geo Mission, is committed to researching the changing Arctic environment, and how the effects of climate change there might act as an early indicator for changes around the rest of the globe.

In the time-honoured tradition of exploration, Catlin Arctic Survey

connects scientists and explorers in the quest to advance scientific

understanding of this vulnerable area of the world.

In 2011, Geo Mission is taking Arctic research one step further,

looking at how the freshening and warming of the Arctic

Ocean might impact on the Atlantic Thermohaline

Circulation, part of a global ocean conveyor that

is responsible for the transport of nutrients

around the oceans, and has a powerful effect

on our weather and climate.

SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND TO CATLIN ARCTIC SURVEY 2011

Will the freshening, warming Arctic Ocean have an impact on the Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation?

The Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation (ATHC) is part of a global

ocean current driven by differences in density between warm/

fresh water (low-density surface currents) and cold/salty water

(high-density deep ocean currents). It is a key driver of this global

circulation because of the overturning of north-bound surface

Atlantic Ocean warm water as it encounters the edge of the cold sea

ice covered Arctic Ocean.

The North Atlantic Drift and Gulf Stream, which comprise part of

the ATHC, are responsible for conveying vast quantities of heat from

the tropics to northern latitudes, maintaining warmer than expected

climates for countries such as the UK, EU and NE coast of the USA.

Similarly, it provides rainfall supplies in Europe and is thought to

maintain lower than expected sea levels for the east coast of the

USA, especially around the Gulf Stream.

Scientists are concerned that a slowing of the ATHC may result

in major changes to regional climates. A significant factor in such

slowing is the freshening and warming of Arctic Ocean waters,

itself the result of climate change. In particular it is

thought that the upper part of the overturning

ATHC will be slowed by fresher water input,

derived from the melting polar sea ice,

increased Arctic river run-off, and changing

patterns of precipitation into the Arctic

Ocean basin.

Research undertaken by the expedition team,

travelling from Russia to the North Pole as

part of the 2011 Survey, is expected to almost

double the total volume of existing comparable water

column data for that area, and also facilitate more extensive

geophysical and biogeochemical research on the freshening

Arctic Ocean.

The Montane Lakeland 100 (Ultra Tour of the Lake District)

is an annual event taking place every July. The race is one

of the most spectacular long distance trail races in Europe.

The circular route encompasses the whole of the Lakeland

fells, including in the region of 6300m of ascent and

consisting entirely of public bridleways and footpaths.

The route starts in Coniston and heads South before completing

a clockwise loop taking in the Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale

and Buttermere before arriving in Keswick. From here the

route heads to Matterdale and continues over to Haweswater

before returning via Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater to

the finish at Coniston.

In addition to the Lakeland 100 the Lakeland 50 event also takes

place with 3100m of ascent starting from the Dalemain Estate just

north of Pooley Bridge and finishing at Coniston.

July 2010 Race Report

This years race took place on the 23rd-25th July with 504 entrants

from the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, USA, Ireland and Israel.

The fell running legend Joss Naylor started the 100 race and made

a presentation at the debrief, “Just keep focusing on small steps

throughout the race” he went on to casually state to 200 nervous

competitors, “I ran the length of Hadrians Wall (85 miles) in 9 hours,

you’ll be fine”.

The 100 race began in Coniston at 5pm on Friday evening in

perfect sunny conditions. Relentlessly running through the night

the competitors experienced a crystal clear starry night sky as they

scrambled and slid there way up and over some of the finest mountain

passes the UK has to offer.

By 6am the race began to take its toll and after 8 hours it became

too much for some who decided to call it a day at the half way point,

Dalmain Estate. Many continued however placing one foot in front of

the other, hypnotically focused on the race finish. The race leader Stuart

Mills swept through the 75 mile Kentmere checkpoint pausing only to

sip a cup of water before pushing on for the final 25 miles. Stuart won

the race with a time of 24:11, followed later by Andy Mouncey (25:37)

and Duncan Harris (25:56). Britta Sendlhofer was the first woman to

ever finish the 100 with a majestic time of 32:19. What made Britta’s

effort all the more extraordinary was that she completed the final 25

miles with a stress fracture to her leg.

The Montane Lakeland 50 began in style on Saturday morning at

11am on the Dalemain Estate. 270 people stood under the heat of

the sun patiently waiting at the start line, focused on the trail ahead.

From the off Andrew James and Jon Morgan fought their way down

the trail. Sticking close together they swept through checkpoint after

checkpoint in a gladiatorial dual to the finish. Race Director Marc

Laithwaite summed up the finish, “it was an incredible battle, after the

Tilberthwaite checkpoint and with 11 miles to go Andrew managed to

steal himself and pull away putting 7 minutes into Jon, finishing with a

time of 7:46!” Both competitors have set an incredible record breaking

time, one that will be very difficult to beat.

Competitor and after competitor raced through miserable drizzle

and increasingly difficult conditions, battling into the early hours of

Sunday morning crossing the finish line at Coniston to warm heartfelt

applause from officials and competitors alike.

As the sun rose on Sunday morning Coniston school race HQ was

filled with exhausted but happy faces, competitors huddled together

exuberantly swapping ‘trail stories’ tucking into there race breakfast

courtesy of the famous WILFS cafe.

The race is as much an endurance event for the marshals as it is for

the competitors. With 15 checkpoints manned by 32 marshals and 40

physiotherapists the race logistics and organisation is a monumental

challenge. Marshals enthusiastically feed, care and re motivate

(where needed!) the competitors and send them off in onwards

down the trail with as much care as they would there own family.

Paul Cosgrove of Montane manned the Montane Kentmere checkpoint

“Our team served 421 bowls of pasta, 348 bowls of rice pudding

and we made over 100 litres of fruit smoothie!” Race competitor

Julia Buckly described Kentmere as “a sort of oasis of ace-ness and

I think that says it all really. Just the ticket at that point in the route”.

Every single checkpoint worked extremely hard to ensure that the

race was a memorable experience. The Montane Lakeland race is a

community. A community of people undertaking an extraordinary

achievement with a passionate collective spirit.

Race Director Marc Laithwaite summed it up at the prize giving

ceremony in front of 200 exhausted but beaming faces “The race is

about spirit, a community spirit of incredible achievements”.
