Dale Kennedy

Head coach Dale Kennedy entered the 2009 season with high hopes and realistic expectations. He knew he had an experienced men’s squad and a developing women’s squad. Kennedy hoped the men could be a force in the conference race and challenge the Mountain Region for a spot in the NCAA Championships in November.

“We knew going into the season that this year’s men’s squad had potential. We had strong enough consistency in the top four that we knew if a couple guys could step up at the right time, we could challenge for an at-large bid to the NCAAs.”

But, the cold and flu season, along with some disappointing performances at the pre-national meet all but kicked the Bobcats out of contention for a national spot.

“We really needed to do well at that national meet and we didn’t do as well as we hoped,” Kennedy said. “That was our only opportunity to beat some teams that might have been in contention for the nationals in another region and position ourselves.”

Despite the disappointment, the MSU men finished second at the conference meet with junior Nick Atwood placing fourth and sophomore Patrick Casey placing eighth, both winning all-conference honors. Senior Matt Adams just missed all-conference, placing 12th. Casey went on the gain All-

Mountain Region honors placing 21st at the region meet and just missed an individual at-large bid for the

NCAA meet. Casey was also this season’s Male Top Gun Award winner.

Kennedy’s women had a growing season. They were led by sophomore Heather Haug who was

honored as the 2009 Female Top Gun. She ran number one in every race for the ‘Cats. Haug placed

14th at the conference meet and was followed by Kala Jauquet at 30th.

Founded in 1893 as Montana’s land grant college, MSU-Bozeman is a comprehensive, multipurpose university integrating programs of instruction, research, and public service.

Montana State University has a national and international reputation for its excellence in undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and sciences, agriculture, architecture, education, engineering, health and human development, and nursing. It is routinely listed by U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s “best buys” for undergraduate education and ranks among the leaders in the number of Goldwater scholarship recipients. It is an institution committed to making history by better positioning today’s students for meaningful lives in the globalizing economy of the 21st century.

Our campus is located in the heart of the Gallatin Valley, a rich farm land of scenic grandeur in mountainous southwest Montana at an altitude of 5,000 feet and just 90 miles from Yellowstone National Park. Southwestern Montana, with its network of rivers and streams and its mountain lakes, is a paradise for people who enjoy outdoor recreation. Located in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, Bozeman is truly a remarkable community. The Bozeman area at large encompasses over 50,000 people with backgrounds and cultures as diverse as the Montana landscape.

From cattle ranchers to high tech engineers, the area is home to a breed of people who have come to appreciate an unmatched quality of life. While retaining a small town feel, Bozeman prides itself on offering community activities and programs typically available only in larger, metropolitan areas. Combine the wide array of resources with an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities and it’s easy to understand why Bozeman ranks as one of the nation’s most livable cities.
