Introduction to
Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments
Wednesday, September 28, 2016
Webinar presented by OPI and Measured Progress
Judy Snow, OPI
Jessica Eilertson, OPI
Megan Self, Measured Progress
1
Overview
The interim assessments are one component
of the Smarter Balanced assessment system
and are designed to support teaching and
student learning throughout the year and
provide information to inform instruction.
The items are developed under the same
conditions, protocols, and review procedures
as those used in the summative assessments.

Interim Basics Available on demand
No cost to schools
May be used in grade levels other than
enrolled grades
Same accessibility options as the end-of-the
year summative
No limit to the number of times they can test
Non-secure item bank: educators may
access questions and student responses 5
Two Types
IABs (Interim Assessment Blocks)
Small sets of related concepts
Provide detailed information for instructional purposes
Electronically scored (except some performance tasks which
require local hand scoring)
ICAs (Interim Comprehensive Assessments)
Same content as summative on a smaller scale
Two parts
Electronically scored section
Performance tasks which required local hand scoring
Both parts must be completed before scoring and reporting
6
Recommended Steps for Use
After loading the secure browser
IABs (except performance tasks)
IAB performance tasks (after hand scoring training)
ICAs (after hand scoring training)
7
Examples of the Use of IABs
− A teacher recently changed his instruction
to emphasize reading informational text. A
block is used to augment his formative
information regarding the degree to which
students learned the skill he emphasized.
− A team of teachers uses a block to become
informed about how a group of students is
performing in geometry before and after
instruction.
