Hello Moose Legionnaires,

Congratulations and thank you to Rusty Lythgoe for accepting the position of Fraternal Director for Old Dominion Moose Legion #148. It is great when Ches-terfield #1980 members step up. In partnership with the LOOM and Chapter 2434 the Moose Legion Committee will be hosting a Tiki Night on August 10 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. There will be no cover charge for this fun filled event. The next MLC meeting is Thursday, August 8, after the Queen of Hearts drawing, around 7:45 pm. We always have refreshments and Moose Legion Milk before meetings. All #1980 Moose Legion-naires and Chapter #2434 co-workers are encouraged to attend. Attend the meet-ings and find out what is go-ing on in the MLC and Moose Legion. It is always great to see Moose Legionnaires from other lodges at our meetings. The next ODML #148 meeting is Saturday, August 17 at Sandston #1937. All meetings begin at 2:00 pm with refreshments served be-fore meeting. ODML #148 has the pick 3 calendars for the month of August. This is a fund raiser based on the Virginia Lottery pick 3 number. It pays the amount shown on each date block on your calendar. See me or MLC Chairman Jim Jordan to purchase calendars or more information. Our next breakfast is Sun-

Save the dates: The ODML #148 Fall Celebra-tion is October 12-13 at Rich-mond-East Family Center #1947. Plenty of family fun activities are planned for Sat-urday, October 12 and confer-ral of new candidates will be at 10:00 am, Sunday, October 13. Director of Membership Mike Rios will be the Official Visitor. The dates for the Win-ter Celebration are February 6 to February 9, 2020. It will again be at VA Beach/Nor-folk. Room rates will be the same as last year. I will have more information as the dates near. Please keep the following Moose Legionnaires and their families in your thoughts and prayers: Tony Rowe’s father-in-law passed away. Deanne Scott is having health issues. Larry Salmons’ wife, Chris is recovering from knee surgery. I hope everyone contin-ues to have a great summer. God bless our soldiers that are serving overseas. Remember the oath you took! “Participation in the social quarters of any Moose Lodge is a privilege and not a right of membership. This privilege is conditioned upon all persons conduct-ing themselves, while in and about the social quarters, in a gentlemen / lady like and orderly manner.”

Alright, let’s address the Elephant in the room!

As a result of Moose International/Supreme Council con-sidering encouragement from the membership, the overwhel-ming majority recently voted at convention to cease smoking in our Moose lodge homes. A similar vote in recent years upheld smoking in our lodges and the majority vote was respected and honored in accordance with our General Laws with little or no indignance. Now, our world has changed as well as the majority of the opinions of our membership and we are going “non-smoking” in our lodge home. All we ask is that you re-spect the membership decision at the same level that the pre-vious decision was acknowledged and accepted. We are chal-lenged to move forward. I personally feel that if you use the excuse of the lodge closing as a result of this, you were looking for an excuse to fail or you were catering to a few in order to keep things the same. Perhaps you could consider working on a plan to adapt and overcome vs. giving up as an excuse? Perhaps we could go back in our membership records and contact those who dropped because of the smoke and let them know what’s going on. Look, I NEVER want to be contraversial but it’s time that somebody tells it like it is. OUR PAST CANNOT SUP-PORT OUR FUTURE!!! If you truly LOVE the Moose and believe in what we do, I know it’s not an issue with you. If you are incensed by the recent decision and choose to let your membership expired despite our mission, then I wish you well. Hopefully there is a “BAR” near you that will accommodate you. My Moose membership means more to me than an entit-lement to admission to a local watering hole. I respect accomo-dations for ALL members but can’t wrap my head around the entitlement mentality after knowing what we support. I ask the lodge leadership to work to accommodate all of our members and be sincere in your considerations. We can make this work! We are part of a bigger plan, it’s not all about “us”!

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

We are supporting the Chesterfield Food Bank this quarter. We will have a food drive to support the Summer Meals for Kids. The drive started June 17 and goes thru August 31. A box has been placed in the ball room to collect food and flyers are at the tables as to the items needed. We will also need money donations along with food. Please help the kids. Lets do a good job. Thank you, Jack Gaulin and Eva Hall

Hope everyone is staying cool in this heat!!!! Here are some fun events for August.The joint TIKI night on the pavilion is happening on Sat-urday August 10th from 6-10. Music, drinks, pulltabs and Lyn will be having her crabcake special !!! Tracey Ladd Shook will be hosting a Spaghetti Din-ner on Saturday August 17th in the ballroom. Cost will be 10.00/person from 5:30 to 7:30. Come out and have some of Dinah’s homemade spaghetti sauce (YUM). Labor Day Celebration Eva Hall will be having a Bake Sale. Check lodge and facebook for date and time. Sports Activity Chairman Wanda Blackburn will be having a fun night of “Family Feud” on Sept. 14th at 7:00 p.m. Stay tune for more info on that event. Tracey will also be hosting a Luau on October 19th. Mark your calendars and look for more info in the next newsletter. Thank you to Liz Westmoreland, Becky Bender and MaMa Jo for having a fun door prize game of left right center at our last meeting. So much fun!!!!
