Myjourneyfromanobliviousconsumer to a producer ofsoftware was unexpectedand unique. It all startedwhen I signed up forRoboticsclass. InspiredbythepopularTVseriesGrey’sAnatomy, I was convincedthatIwouldpursuemedicineand become the next Dr. Christina Yang. Hopingto further my knowledge of the human anatomy,IsignedupforSportsMedicineformysophomoreyear.Ineededtopickanothersemester-longelectivetocompletemyschedule, so IdecidedonRoboticsbecauseIhadheardtherewasnohomework.Havingno experience in technology and being the onlysophomoreinaclassofjuniorsandseniorsmademeextremelynervousaboutthisclass.Tomysurprise,Iimmediatelyfellinlovewithrobotics–thefreedomofcontrollingarobotIhadbuilttodowhateverIwantedwasextremelyfreeing.Afteronlyafewweeksofthisclass, my aspirations for the future had completelychanged.NolongerdoIwanttobeMeredithGrey–IwanttofollowinthefootstepsofwomenlikeGraceHopper, Ada Lovelace, and Helen Greiner. I wantto study computer science and become a socialentrepreneurandsoftwareengineer,orsomeonewhoinnovatestechnologytohelpothersandeffectglobalchange.
As women, the STEM (science, technology,engineering, and mathematics) field is even moredaunting because it is such a male-dominatedindustry.AccordingtoGirlsWhoCode,womenmake
uphalfoftheU.S.workforce,butholdjust25%ofthejobsintechnicalorcomputingfields.Nevertheless,asateengirlenteringthetechworld,Icantellyouthatitisthebestdecisionyouwillevermake.
If you are thinking about pursuing a career in theSTEMfields,orevenifyouhavedecidedthatit’snotforyou,hereisalistofreasonsforexploringcomputerscience,more informationabout the industry,andafewtipsandsuggestionstohelpmakeyourjourneyalittleeasier:
1.A degree in computer science gives you alimitlessamountofcareeropportunities: softwaredevelopment,graphicdesign,artificialintelligence,robotics, virtual realityandvideogamedesign,animation, computational linguistics–the list goesonandon.Computerscienceisextremelyversatileinthatyoucancombineitwithanyother interestyou may have, simply because technology isinvolvedineverythingwedotoday.
2.Somepeoplethinkcomputersciencelackscreativity.Istruggledwiththisforalongtime,asIalsolovephotography and hope to further this passionin the future.However, now thatI’ve shifted myfocus away fromrobotics and moretoward softwareengineering, I candefinitely see howI my creativity willbeusefulinmywork.WhenI’mcodingamobileappor designing new features on a website, creative

3.Because computer science is a relatively “new”field,thecapacityfor innovation isenormous.Pursuingacareerinthisfieldallowsyoutopioneernewtechnologies,suchasvirtualrealitytherapyforvictimsofPTSDoraspacecraftthatwillgetpeopleto Mars. Computer science definitely challengesyoutothinkoutsideoftheboxinordertoinnovatesolutionstoproblemsfacedbyhumanity.
4.Techneedsmoregirls.Currently,thereisobviouslya significant lack of diversity in Silicon Valley (ametaphorforthetechindustryatlarge),butmoreadding women in computer science, who wouldusetheiruniquelifeexperiencesandtechnologytosolvemajorsocialjusticeissuesaffectingourworldtoday,willinhibitinnovation.Youshouldnotaspiretostudycomputerscience justbecausetherearenotenoughgirls in thefield,but it iscertainlyanaddedbenefit!
5.Money.Don’tgetmewrong–youshoulddefinitelypursue what you are most passionate about,regardlessofhowmuchitpays.Thatbeingsaid,anaveragesalaryof$100,000forsoftwareengineersisanextraincentiveforpursuingcomputerscience.
6.Ifyouwanttogetseriousaboutpursuingcomputerscienceorrobotics,therearesomanyopportunitiestolearnmoreaboutcoding!Ifyouareahighschoolstudent, sign up for Robotics or Programmingfor Beginners classes. You can also apply for theGirlsWhoCodeSummer Immersionnextyear,anincredible opportunity that teaches girls how tocode, connects them with industry professionals,and gives them the opportunity to develop theirown product. There are countless tutorials andcoursesonline for learninghowtocode; someofmy favorites include Codecademy, Udemy, andHourofCode(seebelowforweblinks).
Withroboticsandall formsoftechnology,therearenorules–it’stotallyuptoyoutocomeupwithawayto complete a task or solve a problem. Sometimes
thisutterlackofrestrictionandguidancemakesyoufeellostatseawithoutacompass,tryingdesperatelynottothrowyourcomputeratthewall.Butonceyouhitthat“runprogram”buttonandseethatthecodeyouwroteisexecutingtheassignedtask,youfeellikeasuperhero–andthat’swhycoding is,quite literally,magic.

Go online and buy your tickets. Forsomething new, try the NightTime Studio Tour. Andif you have energy left over, hang out at Universal CityWalk. We love it here in Monrovia,but it’s ok ifyougoouttoeatatoneoftheir30places/restaurantsonyourexcursion.
