In 1998 the average annual cost for a four-year private college was just over $21,000. By 2003 the cost had risen to just shy of $27,000, including room and board. By 2008 you can anticipate costs of over $34,000. The cost of a public college will be less, but can still certainly run upwards of $12,000 annually.

Of high school dropouts, 88% said they had passing grades in high school. Asked to name the reasons they had left school, more respondents named boredom than struggles with course work.

Almost two-thirds of students say they would work harder if courses were more demanding or interesting

About the same number of students said their senior year would be more meaningful if they could take courses related to the jobs they wanted or if some of their courses could be counted toward college credit.

Even more striking, when the governors asked high schoolers how valuable their senior year was, half said it was a “waste of time,” or could be “much more meaningful,” and more than a third said their classes were not adequately preparing them for college.
