Hello Visitors:would like to welcome you to Monroe County and let you know that my door

is always open to you. I always say that you are only a visitor the fi rst time here;

after that, you are considered a friend. We would truly love for you to make our historic county your home.

We have much to offer here. Our county is ideal for anyone who is tired of traffi c and waiting in line. We are small enough to spare you all the headaches of a large city but just large enough to offer a hospitable place where you can bond with all of us as we work, worship and play together in a tranquil, family-friendly environment. The quality of life is defi nitely superior here. We have wonderful, safe, beautiful neighborhoods and wooded, waterfront or farming acreage for homes or recreation.

Other benefi ts include the following: The cost of doing business is extremely reasonable. Real estate is a good value. We have superior health care providers, especially for a rural community. Our public schools are competitive, and we have an accredited private school option. In addition, we have an exceptional college, Alabama Southern, recognized as one of the top 100 community colleges

in the nation which offers a host of two-year and some four-year degrees and numerous certifi cate programs. It also provides an outstanding foundation for transfer students to our neighboring four year institutions. Our airport is equipped with a 6,100-foot runway that can land large corporate jets. We have a diverse array of industrial properties that are ready for occupancy. We want your business and are

willing to work diligently with you to make your business here in Monroe County a reality.

Please consider making our home your home. No matter where my wife and I have traveled together over the past 40 years, we still think that Monroe County is the best choice ever for living, working and raising a family. We hope you will stay here in God’s Country with us.

Best regards,

Greg NorrisJudge of Probate & Chairman, Monroe County Commission

urrent-day Monroeville was once the home of the Creek Indians, where the land was clashed over by France, Spain and England. In 1815, the Creek Indians surrendered the land at the Treaty of Fort

Jackson and the county was created by proclamation of the governor of the Mississippi Territory. The county

was once about one-third of the size of present-day Alabama and is often referred to as the “Mother County.”

Monroeville, named Monroe County’s seat of government in 1832, was incorporated in 1899. Both Monroeville and Monroe County were named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe.

While visiting Monroeville, make sure to partake in a historic walking tour or participate in the town’s 10 K Volkswalk sponsored by the Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce. Visitors can access a guided walking tour by contacting the Chamber.

Famous historic sites throughout the county not to be missed include the Masonic Hall at Perdue Hill (circa 1823 and visited by the Marquis De Lafayette), Burnt Corn (the site of the outbreak of the Creek Indian War of 1814), Rikard’s Mill (a restored gristmill and park north of Beatrice) and the Alabama River Museum on the Alabama River (the only river museum in the state and featuring many Native American artifacts), open by appointment only.

MONROE COUNTY HERITAGE MUSEUM – THE MAIN ATTRACTION!Monroeville’s 1903 courthouse, which once served as the county seat, is home to the Monroe County Heritage Museum. The building was lovingly restored in a grassroots effort beginning in 1989 and concluding in 2002. The museum today features permanent exhibits dedicated to Monroeville writers Nelle Harper Lee and Truman Capote, who were childhood companions. The museum annually attracts over 30,000 visitors, more than the county’s population.

Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, To Kill A Mockingbird was published July 11, 1960. Its publication put Monroeville on the map.

for literary tourists; the novel, now in its 56th year of publication continues to draw visitors to Monroeville from all over the world.

The fi lm version of To Kill A Mockingbird debuted in 1962, and won a best-actor Oscar for Gregory Peck, who portrayed Atticus, and an adapted screenplay award for Horton Foote.

Christopher Sergel’s ever popular theatrical version followed, and has been a springtime tradition at Monroeville’s historic courthouse since 1991. Enacted by a volunteer cast, The Mockingbird Players, and set in the Otha Lee Biggs Amphitheater, on the west side of the courthouse square, (Act 1) and upstairs in the historic courtroom (Act 2), the production annually plays to sold out audiences. The 25th Production of “To Kill A Mockingbird” was listed in the Top 10 Events for Alabama Tourism for 2014.

A whole industry has grown up around Monroeville’s role as “Literary Capital of Alabama,” a title bestowed in 1997 by offi cial declaration of the Alabama Legislature.

There are two walking tours of the downtown area; one narrated with signage that relates a history of homes and structures in the downtown historic district. In 2009, over 400 structures in Monroeville’s historic downtown were designated by The National Park Service as worthy of designation on “The National Register of Historic Places.” These include the 1903 museum, the U.S. Post Offi ce and many other commercial and residential structures.

Businesses throughout the downtown maintain a “main street” fl avor. In 2014, Monroeville became a certifi ed Alabama Main Street community, and hired its fi rst Main Street director, currently sharing offi ce space with the Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce. Artists and entrepreneurs in the Monroeville Main Street district offer unique items for sale, such as original artwork, pottery, quilts, handpainted ceramics, embroidered items, furniture, woodworking and more. The Bird’s Nest Gift Shop, inside the Monroe County Heritage Museum, offers a wide selection of items, ranging from Rikards Mill grits and cornmeal, to old fashioned childrens toys, artwork, hand towels and more. The gift shop has been termed “a destination in itself.”

On July 14, 2015, Monroeville and the release of Harper Lee’s Go Set A Watchman was the No. 2 news story in the country, second only to the discovery of ice on the planet Pluto. Monroeville was the center of attention for the national and international press as numerous news organizations descended on the town for several days, and the Monroe County Public Library became a center for visiting members of the press. The Chamber of Commerce hosted walking tours based on Go Set A Watchman, while the Monroe County Heritage Museum hosted a big read of the book, themed around the older Scout’s visit to her hometown from New York set in the 1950s. Ol Curiosities and Books held a midnight launch party for sales of the book, which was attended by several hundred people. The town known as the “Literary Capital” added another notch to its literary belt, thanks to its most famous citizen, Nelle Harper Lee. Signs posted around town proclaimed, “Thank you, Miss Lee” and “Can’t Wait to Read Watchman.” The release of the book spurred a new wave of tourism for the town and its businesses.

Whaever the occasion, a visit to Monroeville is not complete without an extensive tour of the courthouse square area! ■

DININGonroeville offers many dining options. Due to

the area’s southern location, these range from the traditional “meat and three” buffets to

such popular dishes as “shrimp and grits” and barbecue and seafood every way imaginable!

Local restaurant David’s Catfi sh House has been prominently featured in the Alabama Tourism Department’s “100 Dishes To Eat Before You Die” brochure. David’s Catfi sh is featured for its fried catfi sh and cheese grits.

A.J.’s Family Restaurant is popular on Sundays for its deluxe breakfast and lunch buffets — be sure to try the tomato gravy! Some of the best fried chicken in town is found at the Piggly Wiggly Deli counter. For a quick sandwich lunch, the town’s two Subway restaurants are hard to beat, offering excellent service and a variety of options. Every other Saturday in Monroeville fi nds Cherry Street Bar-B-Que open for business. Proprietor Melvin Foukal also caters everything from wedding receptions to dinners on the grounds.

One of the best steaks in south Alabama, in addition to award winning barbecue, may be had at Big D’s Butts & Stuff, conveniently located near area motels and major highways.

On Monroeville’s historic downtown square Courthouse Square Café is known for its desserts and petit-fours, and The Sweet Tooth Bakery serves up a traditional southern lunch — if it is Thursday, it is chicken and dressing day at the Sweet Tooth! For just desserts, Sharon’s Cakes in Excel serves up everything from traditional carrot cake, to lovely wedding and special occasion cakes with divine buttercream icing. To top it off, almost everyone serves “sweet tea.” If “sweet tea” is not on the menu, it is not a southern establishment!

Prop & Gavel is a favorite place for evening dining and cocktails, sporting a full bar in a beautifully renovated downtown storefront. It also offers a rooftop dining option and daily lunch specials.

No visit to Monroeville is complete without a stop at Mel’s Dairy Dream, next to the site of the Faulk House (original home of Truman Capote’s cousins). Stop by to view the historic marker in Capote’s honor, and grab a milkshake, fries and a burger — a Monroeville mainstay!

Another great neighborhood spot is Mark’s Barbecue on Main Street in Excel. The town was recently awarded the Quality of Life Award for Municipalities under 5,000 in population by the Alabama Municipalities Association.

If ethnic food is your niche, Hibachi Grill serves up a daily buffet of Asian food and also has a wide selection of items to order from the menu. Los Marinos serves up tasty margaritas as well as homemade chips, salsa and guacamole, and an array of homemade Mexican dishes. Con Los Amigos Restaurant also offers great Mexican dining options, as does Rancho Grande, conveniently located next to Walmart.

Monroeville also offers the usual fast food options, including McDonald’s, Hardee’s, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, Church’s, Burger King and others. If you visit the area, we promise you will not starve!

Huddle House, at the intersection of U.S. 84 and Alabama 21, is another great option for visitors, conveniently located near several area motels.

Recently opened is Guthrie’s, an ever-popular spot for fried chicken. Guthrie’s is also known for its secret recipe sauce that adds that something extra!

LODGINGMonroeville offers many motels and lodging options. From the more modern Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, with its interior corridor, conveniently located near the major intersection of the El Camino East/West Corridor (U.S. Highway 84) and Alabama Highway 21, to

the nearby Best Western Inn and Mockingbird Inn, under the capable ownership of Anil Patel, Monroeville motel owners are friendly and they cater to the business and tourism crowd. Most motels offer a deluxe continental breakfast, and are generally located within fi ve miles or closer to the downtown courthouse square.

For those on a tighter budget, or who wish to be closer to Monroeville’s historic downtown, there is the Budget Inn, which has served the town since 1950. (Originally the Monroe Motor Court, in the heyday of Vanity Fair, Monroeville’s long time apparel manufacturing facility, it was almost impossible to book a room at this property). In the heart of Monroeville, it has been owned by Mahesh Daya since 2007. Daya has

made many improvements to the property and its 24 rooms. The property is a “Going Green” participant and is highly energy effi cient. All rooms boast a refrigerator and microwave. This is a wonderful property for casual tourists groups who may have the option of booking the entire property, and who can walk to town and nearby restaurants.

The Royal Inn on Alabama Highway 21, across from Walmart, is another great option for those visiting and working in the area. The Monroeville Inn has been purchased by Anil Patel, and its 69 rooms are currently undergoing a complete renovation. The newly renovated property is slated to open in May, 2016 as The Express Inn.

For the Bed & Breakfast crowd, The Loft Bed & Breakfast, (fi ve minute drive time from Monroeville Square) offers charming log cabin living and a truly deluxe breakfast served up by its charming owner, Susan Loftin. And nearby Pineapple’s Mountain Laurel Lodge is a total escape from city life in a beautiful and well-appointed setting that can accommodate a crowd!

If a spa stay is desired, nearby Wind Creek Casino and Hotel in Atmore (30-minutes drive time from Monroeville) offers deluxe accommodations as well as many entertainment options on site.

The Chamber of Commerce maintains a list on all available nearby lodging options. ■

HIGHER EDUCATIONAlabama Southern provides comprehensive educational opportunities and services in diverse learning environments to enhance community and economic development for the citizens of southwest Alabama. The college provides services in an area of over 5,000 square miles with campuses located in Monroeville, Thomasville, Gilbertown and Jackson.

Alabama Southern provides nearly 1,400 students with a fl exible schedule by offering courses on-campus, online, in the evening, in mini-terms, and through dual enrollment for area high school students. Courses offered are many of the same as four-year institutions at a fraction of the cost. ASCC also offers smaller class sizes with a 17:1 student to faculty ratio.

A recent study conducted by WalletHub, an online fi nancial site, found that Alabama Southern Community College ranks among the best community colleges in the nation. ASCC was the only community college in the state of Alabama to be ranked in the top 100. In addition, the college was ranked 16th overall for Classroom

Experience. “The recognition of 16th in the nation for Classroom Experience is a direct result of the hard work from faculty and staff,” said Dr. Reginald Sykes, ASCC President. “We have high expectations for our students and ensure that services are in place to support their academic success.”

Alabama Southern supports and encourages economic growth. The new Workforce Development Center provides courses in the welding and industrial

maintenance programs. In additional, many programs are offered to enrich the area’s quality of life to include art exhibits, concerts, theatre presentations, and the annual events Alabama Writers Symposium and Black History Program.

In 2016, there are exciting changes for Alabama Southern Community College and several other two-year colleges in lower Alabama. The Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees approved the planning process for Alabama Southern to merge with three other colleges to create a single college with expanded academic and technical program offerings and enhanced student opportunities. ■

onroeville, centrally located in southwest Alabama, has

much to offer new and expanding

businesses. The town has transitioned from one of the leading textile communities in the south to a hub for forest products and value-added forest products.

Since the textile industry began its offshore moves in the mid-1990s, Monroeville and Monroe County have had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak, in defi ning a new strategy in economic development.

Currently at the helm of Monroe County’s economic development strategy is Glen Haab, assisted by Jodi Turberville in the Monroeville/Monroe County Economic Development Authority Offi ce. They work very closely with the fi ve- county Coastal Gateway Economic Development Alliance to identify prospective businesses and assist existing industries in their needs.

It helps that Monroeville has established an Advantage Site in its Monroeville Industrial Park, and that several properties in the park are available for ready occupancy, one a 30,000-square-foot speculative building, expandable to 90,000 square feet, and other versatile properties and sites are available throughout the county.

It is also a distinct advantage that Monroeville and Monroe County have a strong employment base. Alabama River Cellulose (ARC), owned by Georgia-Pacifi c, is the county’s largest employer and the largest bleach fl uff producer in North America. ARC has a large track record of capital reinvestment in its mill with a recent investment of over $135 million at the Claiborne facility. As well, the company is a tremendous contributor to community projects. In addition to the bleach fl uff pulp it manufactures at Alabama River Cellulose, which drives its being the largest commercial shipper through the Port of Mobile, Georgia-Pacifi c also manufactures panel products

and dimensional lumber in Monroe County at its other industrial locations in Monroeville: Panel Products, LLC, and Rocky Creek Lumber.

As a forest products hub, Monroeville boasts several diverse forest products companies, such as Harrigan Lumber Company, Owens Lumber Company, Scotch Plywood, B & B Cabinet Doors and others. The direct and indirect employment opportunities offered by these outstanding employers drive Monroe County’s economy. In addition, Gate Precast Company, which manufactures architectural precast concrete, has continued to ramp up employment as it “shapes skylines” in the south, with projects such as the new Atlanta Falcons Stadium, the new Atlanta Braves stadium, Navy Federal Credit Union Headquarters in Florida, and other recognizable additions to a variety of institutions.

In the world of today, everything is logistics. Monroeville’s optimal location, with two connections to Interstate 65, and its location as the hub of the El Camino East/West Corridor (U.S. 84) in Alabama, puts it within 24-hour access to two-thirds of the U.S. economy.

The county is also well served by Monroe County Airport, with its 6,100-foot runway. The airport is heavily utilized by civilian and ➤

Downtown Monroeville, with its quaint courthouse square, surrounding shops, restaurants and museum, is also a draw for residents and tourists alike. Several entrepreneurs are scattered on

the courthouse square, and in this age where everything is available everywhere, there are a plenitude of unique items available only here, or perhaps through online outlets. In 2014, Monroeville was designated as a certifi ed Alabama Main Street community, and hired its fi rst Main Street Director. Continuing an emphasis on quality, Monroeville’s Main Street district has boosted occupancy rates throughout the district.

When exploring Monroe County’s economic development prospects,

one should never discount the county’s natural beauty, nor its acknowledged position as a mecca for hunting, fi shing and outdoor recreational activities. The county is a draw as a retirement location for a population that is tired of traffi c, lines and waits, and that revels in the clear beauty of the night skies over the surrounding countryside.

Monroe County’s future prospects are bright! ■

The Auxiliary of Monroe County is consists of a large group of volunteers dedicated to supporting the hospital and its employees. These volunteers orchestrate numerous fundraisers throughout the year and run a wonderful gift shop within the hospital.

It would be diffi cult to operate the hospital without their undying support.
