Ginger ShampooA gift of nature

Zingiber zerumbet is a perennial plant, which goes dormant above

ground from autumn to spring.

This vigorous ginger has 2 kinds of stalks growing directly from the rhizome:

leafy stems with lanceolate leaves, being able to achieve about 1.2m tall, and

shorter stalks, not exceeding 35cm, springing up in the summer, ended by a

3-10cm long conical fl ower heads. These last ones are formed by very tight

bracts, looking like a green pine kernel. From the overlapping bracts poke out

few small yellowish-white fl owers in August-September or October-December

according to the origin.

As they develop and go mature, the capitula turn red and gradually fi ll with

an aromatic viscous liquid. This transparent aqueous juice can be removed

by expression.

BIOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION

Zingiber zerumbet, also known as Ginger Shampoo, is a perennial plant mostly appreciated for its aromatic

rhizomes.

CULTIVATION

Zingiber zerumbet is an easy to grow plant.

It requires full sun to partial shade, regular moisture to fairly

wet soil. This is the reason why it is often found near rivers,

waterfalls and other sources of water. It develops best on fertile,

organic & slightly alcanic soil (clay, sand, loam). This plant is

moderately salt-tolerant.

It propagates by division of clumps or pieces of the rhizome

(of the matted clumps).

TRADITIONAL USES

Ginger ShampooA gift of nature

The most famous use of the Ginger shampoo is, as its name

indicates it, as a shampoo and hair conditioner. The clear

viscous juice in the mature fl ower heads is rich in natural

surface active agents, has washing properties, and is

fabulous to soften hair fi ber bringing exceptional shine to

the hair. It can be rinsed out or left on the hair all day long.

Traditionally, Polynesian women often pick fl owerheads of

this plant in the undergrowth. As they approach a waterfall,

they squeeze the sudsy juice directly onto their hair and

over their body before having a refreshing bath.

As other cosmetic application, the sweet juice is ancestrally

said to be excellent for massage.

Ginger shampoo also plays an important role in the

Polynesian Pharmacopeia. It enters in the composition

of several local medicines to cure oedema, sores, loss of

appetite, diarrhea etc.

The rhizome, once rasped or ground in a mortar, can be

intended for the treatment of ear infection, toothache or

stomachache (mixed with water). It also can be used to

make tea against indigestion, to improve blood circulation

or for well-being.

The juice of the boiled rhizomes is also used as a medicine

for worm infestation in children.

Macerated in alcohol, it’s considered as a tonic or a

stimulant in China.

The rhizome is often associated to other plants : mixed with a ripe Noni fruit to treat severe sprains or with

Tiare fl owers in buds as remedy against the otitis.

The resulting blend is placed in a closed cloth with large net, bound in order to form a kind of “tea bag”. It can

be tied such as around the injured area or pressed to express an active juice for external application. Another

way is as unction, after decoction by putting in soaking the “tea bag” into hot coconut oil.

As for the leaves, they are used in cataplasm to relieve joint pains. The juice can also be used to calm the thirst.

In daily life, Ginger shampoo, with its fragrant leaves and leaf stalks, is used as condiment in cooking to

enhance the fl avor of meat or fi sh.

Its aromatic rhizome, sliced, dried and reduced in powder, traditionally perfume Tapa (Polynesian materials).

COMPOSITION OF THE ROOTS

Ginger ShampooA gift of nature

Zingiber zerumbet rhizome, composed of sesquiterpens, fl avonoïds and aromatic compounds, is a rich source

of chemical compounds of phytomedical interest.

The main molecule is zerumbone, which differences Zingiber Zerumbet from the common Zingiber Offi cinale.

Zerumbone is a monocyclic sesquiterpen (C15H22O), intensively studied for its use as anti-infl ammatory. This

molecule has a great potential to be used in chemoprevention and chemotherapy strategies against cancers.

It has also shown an activity in suppression of free radical generation, anticholinesterase, and TNF-a release.

Ginger shampoo roots also contain the following chemical components :

Terpens : - alpha-humulene = alpha-caryophyllene, another important sesquiterpen

- humulene derivates such as humulene monoxide

- zerumbone derivates such as zerumbone epoxide

- zederone (which has an anti-staphylococcal activity)

- bicyclic monoterpens such as camphene, camphor, alpha-pinene

Flavonoids : - fl avonoid glycosides such as kaempferol-3-O-(3,4-O-diacetyl-alpha-L-

rhamnopyranoside), kaempferol-3-O-(2,4-O-diacetyl-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside)

- fl avonols such as kaempferol-3,4’-O-dimethylether, kaempferol-3-O-methylether...

All these components, in particular zerumbone and alpha-humulène, confer anti-infl ammatory, antioxidant

and antimicrobial properties.

APPELLATION OF ORIGIN

REGULATION OF USE

In the 80’s, most «Monoi» on the market were fakes coming from Asia or elsewhere...

The exceptional properties of Monoi de Tahiti were offi cially recognized in April 1992 by the Appellation of

Origin becoming a guarantee of authenticity and quality. It is «restricted to products manufactured in French

Polynesia in accordance with local, loyal and constant uses by soaking of Gardenia tahitensis fl owers from

Polynesia, hereinafter called Tiare, in refi ned coconut oil» (extracted from the JORF of April 1992).

Today, the guarantee resulting from this initiative has helped to ensure that 90% of «Monoi» identifi ed comply

with the legislation in force.

The use of the term «Monoi de Tahiti» on any container, packaging, commercial documents or

advertising material is strictly regulated by Decree 92-340 published in the JORF of April 2 1992

(pp. 4727-4729).

The regulation applies to both Monoi de Tahiti oil extract and butter, according to the following conditions:

- A product called Monoi de Tahiti must contain more than 90% of Monoi de Tahiti

- Monoi de Tahiti soaps must contain more than 30% of Monoi de Tahiti

- Monoi de Tahiti hygiene products must contain more than 0.3% of Monoi de Tahiti

- Monoi de Tahiti skin cares must contain more than 1% of Monoi de Tahiti

- Monoi de Tahiti makeup must contain more than 2% of Monoi de Tahiti

The label must include the percentage of Monoi de Tahiti in the product and the “Appellation d’Origine” stamp

(guaranteed stamp of origin).

Monoi de Tahiti® is the fi rst cosmetic product to be granted an Appellation of Origin. This label attests

to the quality of its manufacture, the selection and the Polynesian origin of its ingredients.
