Transcript of \'Monitoring Services\' CPD Presentation
City Surveys is one of the UK’s most respected and frequently contracted
structural monitoring, structural investigations, rail engineering and engineering
survey firms.
We are a vibrant, thriving company that challenges your expectation of what an
engineering survey firm can do.
Established in 2003, we have grown and diversified into a highly capable and
experienced ‘all service’ survey firm.
WHO DO WE WORK FOR?
WHO ARE WE?
HOW DO WE DO IT?Using the very latest in total station technology – most recently the Trimble SCS930 –
our regularly updated fleet of instruments allows operatives to employ a diverse range
of techniques to monitor movement across the broad spectrum of construction and
engineering.
Our inventory of monitoring total stations includes...
Trimble SCS930
Trimble S8
Trimble 5600
Leica TM30
TARGET MONITORINGSince our inception in 2003, City Surveys have been instructed to monitor…
Sheet piles
Party walls
Bridges
Tunnels
Motorway structures
Embankments
Railway track
Cranes
For when large numbers of measurements need to be taken within a short period
of time it is often possible (and more practical) to install an automated total station
monitoring system.
Purchased specifically for this purpose, City Surveys uses the Trimble S8, the
very latest in total station technology. The advantages of the S8 are...
Direct Drive system, 115 degrees movement per second
300 targets can be read in only 2 rotations
Detects movements faster which in turn...
Initiate alarms earlier
REMOTE TARGET MONITORING
We regularly provide track monitoring services and rail personnel to both the
primary rail contractors and their approved sub-contractors. Such clients include...
BAM Nuttall
Colas Rail
Amey Colas
Morgan Est
Stobart Rail
May Gurney Rail
Carillion
OUR CLIENTS
City Surveys is a Link-up accredited company that regularly provides track
monitoring to a diverse range of principle and sub-contractors.
We only employ fully qualified track engineers (Track Handback Lvl 4, TQS,
Stressing-Surveying) and have worked hard to obtain the relevant Achilles
product codes to carry out Network Rail approved track monitoring.
Our monitoring service includes both informed track geometry advice and
appropriate action (imposing speed restrictions) as well as daily geometry
reporting. We typically provide track monitoring as part of a wider engineering
service to a particular project but can also deliver it in isolation.
TRACK MONITORING
HOW DO WE DO IT?Should any one sensor go ‘out of bounds’ or, indeed, show an error, an immediate SMS
text alert is sent to any number of designated numbers.
Likewise an email is also sent instantaneously keeping both our engineers and the
client completely informed. Any number of phone/email contacts can be included.
While this system can be installed using a conventional ‘wired’ approach, City Surveys
has invested heavily in creating our own unique wireless devices. In doing so we have
created a monitoring system that is impervious to cable strikes and the everyday
damage that can be inflicted on exposed equipment whilst on site.
PRESSURE MONITORINGOur specially constructed 500-bar rated pressure transducers can be connected to
hydraulic props and emit an analogue signal which, in turn, is converted to a digital
signal via a series of acquisition modules.
The signal is then transmitted automatically via GPRS mobile broadband to our secure,
stand-alone off-site server.
Our sophisticated electronics are able to receive and transmit up to three readings per
second.
By integrating vibration sensors into our unique Monitoring Data Portal, City
Surveys can assess both vibration frequency and amplitude across a variety of
engineering projects.
Potential applications range from monitoring the levels of vibration causing
discomfort to humans to assessing the effects of piling or demolition upon
surrounding structures.
All sensors and equipment are calibrated to BS6955 and are fully IP-rated
ensuring a weather-proof and reliable service for our clients.
VIBRATION MONITORING
TILT MONITORINGOur tilt and displacement systems (which detect movement of
1000th of a degree) can be used to measure the response of
structures to influences such as loading, settlement or subsidence.
The accuracy and insight that these techniques provide has
proved invaluable to clients needing to monitor large structures
such as bridges, dams, cranes, sheet piles and party/retaining
walls.
GPRS WIRELESS TELEMETRYData is transferred from our sensors in near real-time to City Surveys’ secure, off-site
server via a wireless GPRS telephony system. The portal software then interprets the
information and alerts staff to any alarm events.
Our T24-Bsi GPRS industrial base stations (modems) are flexible and robust units and,
in conjunction with our unique software, can be used to configure all devices within their
range.
This device can listen to all linked sensors and transmit data packages to a wide range
of devices, therefore making control and group measurement very simple.
ONLINE DATA MONITORINGWe have invested significantly into developing our own, bespoke monitoring software
that is included free of charge as part of all monitoring projects.
This enables ourselves, our clients and their clients to view up-to-date, real-time data
received directly from the sites without leaving their chair, wherever they might be in the
world.
Our system has been specifically designed to be incredibly user-friendly. As a result, all
interested parties (including insurers and other ‘none technical’ personnel) and not
simply your engineers are able to navigate the Portal with ease...
Simply choose the site you wish to view and be immediately
presented with a live ‘traffic light’ view of your site.
At a glance you are given the current reading and alert status
of each sensor as well as the temperature of the site at that
moment.
Simply click on the sensor icon and have the previous
minute, hour, week or even year’s readings delivered to your
desktop in either graphical or tabular format.
ULTIMATE FLEXIBILITYData for each site and individual sensor can be viewed both historically
and in real-time by simply changing the time/date range within the portal
Unique to the marketplace, our user-friendly customer interface is so
simple that clients are regularly up and running within 30 minutes of
receiving their login details.
Data from any range can be printed off or
downloaded as a universally compatible CSV
file which can then be used/manipulated in any
number of ways by any contemporary data
handling package...
Data within your chosen range (stretching
from the last 10 minutes to the entire project)
can be displayed both graphically or in
tabular form…

THE ADVANTAGES Commercially viable - delivers considerable cost savings over our competitors and over more traditional forms of
monitoring.
Provides a fully auditable data trail, a time and date stamped log of every sensor reading from the moment
monitoring was established. Vital for all sites where third parties/insurers are involved. Downloadable at any time.
Can operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Data can be viewed from any PC with an internet connection anywhere in the world.
Can utilise both wired and wireless technology depending upon the application.
Usability – our online portal is incredibly easy to use and, unlike our competitors’, ours is free.
Can integrate any type of monitoring from tilt, displacement, load and vibration to settlement, pressure, temperature,
automated total station data, railway track monitoring and CCTV footage.
Our own site engineers are available at very short notice to supplement all monitoring activities and help deliver a
‘belt and braces’ approach where necessary.
City Surveys is a highly experienced, well respected and thriving firm of surveyors
and monitoring engineers operating throughout the UK.
Our unique range of monitoring services are guaranteed to provide not only
peace of mind, convenience and significant cost savings but also a valuable tool
during the construction process. You can, quite simply, predict certain problems,
preventing situations from reaching critical levels and reducing time, costs and
risk in the process.
They can be used either in isolation or in conjunction with our wide range of other
engineering survey and investigation services.
