WELCOMING REMARKS

The mining sector of Mongolia has been identified as the driving engine of the economic growth of the country in the context of prioritizing export-oriented growth trends by the Government of Mongolia, which, in turn, is working hard to foster an investment friendly environment that would attract cutting-edge technologies with least environmental impact.

With the start of development of its world-class resources such as Tavan Tolgoi coal deposits and other potential deposits, significant advancements in socio-economic development of the country can be expected, with a potential to become a major exporter of coal and energy. The rate of the growth of the economy reached 6 per-cent in 2010, up from negative 1.6% during crisis times. This number is expected to reach a whopping 20 percent for year in 2011. We have GDP per capita standing at USD3,000 currently. With sustainable rates of economic growth this indicator can be expected to reach USD5,000 by end of 2012.

The Government shall articulate its policies to further develop coal and energy deposits with identified resource estimates, to support technological upgrade of

existing assets and to promote value-added production of end products. Though its tax and other policies, the Government shall encourage processing and manufacturing plants, setting up further downstream processing facilities, setting up surface and underground mines to further strengthen competitiveness of the coal mining industry.

To commemorate the 90th year anniversary of Mongolian mining industry’s establishment and development in Mongolia, the “Coal Mongolia-2012”, the second international coal investors’ conference and exhibition, is being organized at the highest level and it is my belief that at this critical time the public and private sectors as partnered together, the professional associa-tions, the world renown technology leaders and potential investors gathered today will discuss opportunities and challenges in developing coal and energy industry of Mongolia and come away with constructive outcome.

I wish every success to the second “Coal Mongolia-2012” international conference & exhibition.

Mongolia, with its vast and varied mineral resources and reserves, has become the center of the world’s focus at the moment. We are seeing a significant surge of interest on the part of mining giants and increased amounts of foreign direct investment in downstream processing. Considering harms that the lack of diversity in the economy can cause, the country is striv-ing to avoid becoming a raw minerals provider only and to create a multi-faceted economy through promotion of value-added processing of mineral products and diversification of export products.
