Is it by the amount of money you make? Is it the squarefootage of your home? How many cars you own? We all have different definitions of success and over thepast year the staff at Project REBUILD has had to workwithin what the Department of Labor (DOL) defines as success. In early 2010, it started to become clear that what our outcomeswere prior to DOL and what they needed to be under DOLwere somewhat different. The focus was still about the youngperson and giving them the tools to move forward positivelyin their future, but it became more concrete for us.

Under the DOL grant we were expected to enroll 67 youngpeople during the two year period. Of those young people,we were expected to successfully “place” 70% in employment, post secondary education or the military. In addition,50% were expected to earn a certificate during their timein the program and 50% were expected to make gainsin literacy/numeracy testing.

We’ve done well working towards those goals.

As of September 30, 2011 when the DOL programming ended,we’ve exceeded the goals for enrollment, certificateattainment, literacy/numeracy gains and recidivism. We’re still working towards the placement and retention goals. In addition to the DOL outcome goals, the staff has createdgoals of our own for our participants.

Some of those include helping to obtain drivers licenses, creatinga resume, preparing and practicing job interviews, registeringto vote and opening a checking account. These may not seemlike big successes to most, but to our young people these goalsare new and can sometimes be a challenge.

More important than the numbers, we believe that success ismeasured by the relationships that you create and the livesyou impact. This is no different from the beliefthat Project REBUILD’s founder Carolyn Hessalways held, and we continue to see the impactthat Project REBUILD has had on students overthe past thirteen years. Our entire staff focuseson what’s best for the young person and notnecessarily on the “official outcomes” alone.

Ultimately, we understand that our role is tohelp build the youth and that their confidenceto measure and experience success will comenaturally if we fulfill that role.

How do you measure success?
