BOOK SIGNING AND PANCAKE BREAKFAST- Come
to West Pawlet and meet Megan Price, Author of “Ver-
mont Wild”, who will be present, weather permitting, at
the December 13th Pancake Breakfast event sponsored
by the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department. Megan wi ll
be there with friends for breakfast and beginning at 10:00
a.m., she will be available for signings of her newest book,
“Vermont Wild – Adventures of Fish & Game Wardens,
Volume Four”. The “Vermont Wild” series, tales of wily
poachers, persistent wardens and countless ironic twists
and turns have created a lot of the fun and laughs for read-
ers. The stories have proven popular with readers ages 9 to
99. Local wardens star in the new “Vermont Wild” book
Retired game wardens Norm Brown of Wells and TerryWilliams of Poultney are among a half dozen men who
contributed to the newly released, Vermont Wild, Adven-
tures of Fish & Game Wardens, Volume Four. A family of
competitive deer hunters kept Williams on his toes, while
Brown and a long list of law officers spent years chasing
the leader of a well-oiled poaching ring who operated
throughout the Mettowee Valley. The new book contains
more than 260 pages and 13 illustrated short stories. Re-
tired wardens Eric Nuse of Johnson, John Kapusta of
Hardwick, Bob Lutz of Fairfax and Cabot residents, Ken
Denton and Walt Ackermann also contributed to the new
book, which features a charging bull moose on the cover.
The location for the pancake breakfast and the book sign-
ing is in the firehouse of the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire
Department in southwestern Rutland County , Vermont bor-
dering Washington County , New York. Breakfast is served
by the firemen from 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. The breakfast price
is $8.00 12 years and up, $5.00 5-12 years and children
under 5 are free. The firemen said that Santa Claus will be
at the breakfast event from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Dec.
13th. All are welcome. Megan will be in Rutland City be-
ginning at 1:00 p.m. on Dec 13th for book signings. For
more information about the West Pawlet event, one may

ety at [email protected] or leave a message at 802-

Just Thinking
By: May Jones Always on the coffee table near my sitting spot is a thick, tattered, andspine worn paperback book entitled: The Complete Essays, by Michel DeMontaigne. Influenced by sages Seneca, Aristotle, Cicero, and Plutarch, hewrites about life, and how to live it well —- oftentimes answering the everenduring question of mankind —- what is the meaning of life? He assayedall aspects of life, beginning most of his chapters with the word On …Idleness ,Liars , Constancy , Fear , Solitude , Moderation , Prayer , Smells , Sleep ,Drunkenness , Conscience , Books , Cruelty , Anger , Virtue , Experience andGlory just to name a few. In over 100 chapters, there is not a problem I’veencountered that De Montaigne doesn’t reach all the way from 1572 to 2015with an answer. This is my reference book for everyday problems. Born in France to an aristocratic family, he had the luxury of retirement inhis thirties to devote himself to thinking, reading, and learning about his trueself. He found studying and writing about himself a delightful way to pass thetime of day and looked at himself with great interest, acceptance, and humor. He said: “ I spy closely on myself and keep my eyes constantly directed onmyself alone —- I do not have much else to do.” When I have been wrought with fear, he told me that there is no emotionwhich more readily ravishes our judgement from its proper seat. When I wassuffering, he gently reminded me that pain only occupies as much space aswe make for her. When I needed a friend to affirm my need for solitude, hevindicated me by saying that the greatest thing in the world is to know how tolive to yourself. When I wondered about power and status he reminded methat at the first anguished pain of the gout, it is no help to be called Sire andMajesty. He made me laugh in the face of old age by saying that thedisadvantages of old age could reasonably give birth to a desire for drink, since a capacity for wine is virtually the last pleasure which passing yearssteal away from us. “I myself am the subject of my book, it is not reasonable that you shouldemploy your leisure on a topic so frivolous and vain” he said. I assure you,Michel De Montaigne, that my leisure—-time spent with you has smoothedout the wrinkles in my life and made me realize that hundreds of years betweenlifetimes makes little difference in what makes us human. Dancer is a beautiful girl but timid. She is a mature adult, and has beenat the shelter because of hershyness. She loves to hide in herlittle cat snuggle cube as shown inthe picture, where she feels warmand safe. She does like to be pet onher head, and will purr! She likes
to occasionally come out andexplore, but when she feels insecure, she jumps backin her house. Dancer would do best in a homewithout other animals, or with another calm, oldercat. She needs a home where she will be able tohide and feel safe. As an older cat, she would lovea quiet home to retire to, and where she may beable to feel herself.

From beating the bovine bluesto his love affair with apples, Joe’s keen observations of thelighter side of farming will entertain and inspire readers fromall walks of life.
