MY THOUGHTSby John L JeffersonWith reports swirling that the Ver-mont Legislature will legalize rec-reation use of Marijuana in 2016,I think it is time that we have an honest conversationabout how this might affect Bennington. In a recentinterview, Vermont’s Attorney General Bill Sorrell statedthat he expects a bill to be passed in the next legislativesession to legalize the recreational use and sale of Mari-

juana in the state. There appears to be enough votes inlegislature to pass such a bill and Governor Shumlin

has said he would sign it into law. Science has shownthat although smoking is unhealthy, Marijuana is provento be less harmful than Alcohol. Marijuana is alreadydecriminalized in Vermont and is legal for medicinaluses. Although I do not smoke Marijuana, I do believethat legalizing its recreational use will be largely posi-tive. It would cut down on the black market, increasetax revenue that Vermont so badly needs, create a neweconomic driver for increased tourism, and be an op-portunity for new industry and jobs. Vermont recentlycommissioned The Rand Corporation to produce astudy on the effects of legalizing pot in the state. Theyfound that Vermont would stand to gain at least $20million annually in added tax revenue, and it could addup to as much as $75 million. If Vermont was first inNew England, and the Northeast, to legalize Marijuana

we would most certainly see an increase in visitors tothe state. It is estimated that there are 40 times as manyMarijuana users within a 200 mile radius of the statethan there are in all of Vermont. Allowing hemp to beused for industrial purposes could be a game changer,while growing operations and dispensaries would cre-ate jobs that are so desperately needed. Many ques-tions still remain about what legal pot would end uplooking like in Vermont. It would need to be highlyregulated and aggressively taxed for it to benefit thestate, but it can work, and it has in other states such asColorado. The big question is: how would Benningtonreact to the legalization of a new stimulant? Wouldlocals embrace a new pot driven tourism industry withdispensaries and café’s in town? Bennington would bethe first stop for many out of stater’s coming to Ver-

mont seeking a legal high. If we do see an increase of visitors, it would certainly be a boost to local business.As a community, I believe we must be open minded tothe possibility of becoming a tourism based town if weare to turn things around and become vibrant onceagain. Why not let pot be the catalyst for our resur-gence?

THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS AT THE CCCA new exhibit featuring the artwork of Salem artist, D. StevensBurgess, will be on display during October and November in thefirst floor Benn Room of the Salem Courthouse Community Cen-ter. Stevens was born in New Delhi, India and studied art inBangkok, Thailand and New York. His exhibit contains impres-sionistic work focusing on land, water and the natural world. Hisstudies are creations of his own imagination, and he no longeruses points of reference in any of his pieces. His tones are subtle,and his paintings draw the viewer into the landscape in a mostrelaxing manner. Stevens has exhibited his work in several area

galleries with this being his fourth exhibit at the CCC. The Bennroom is handicap accessible and open to the public.

Yankees legend Yogi Berra passed away last Tuesday at the age of 90.An 18-time All-Star, Berra appeared in 14 World Series as a member of the Yankees and won 10 of them. A sportswriters’ favorite, Berra hadcountless expressions and turns of phrase that were memorable becausemost of them didn’t make any sense. (At the same time, every one had

some truth to it.) Berra-isms (colloquial expressions that lack logic) are now countless, andmany of them are just attributed to Berra, even if he never actually said them. As he so perfectlyput it: “I never said most of the things I said.” Here are some favorites.1. When you come to a fork in the road, take it.2. You can observe a lot by just watching.3. It ain’t over till it’s over.4. It’s like déjà vu all over again.5. No one goes there nowadays, it’s too crowded.
