Along with the bounding kangaroo on theHalfpenny and Penny, the

Ram’s Head reversedesign from the

silver predecimalshilling could beconsideredAustralia’smost iconiccoin design.

The design wasused from 1938

until the last issuein 1963. The original

design was modelled on agrand champion Merino from

the annual Sydney Sheep show in1932. This ram was considered to be

unmatched in the position of its head and horns. Named Uardry 0.1 after its homestation, it became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’ and represented Australia’s growing wool industry. The dignified Merino ramrepresents Australia’s reliance on primary industry through its economic history.

The Royal Australia Mint’s Silver Proof $1 for 2011 features this classic design as it appeared on the shilling. Brutus c.AD42 Gold StaterBrutus is best remembered for the part he played in the assassinationof Julius Caesar. On 15 March 44BC a group of senators calledCaesar to the Roman forum to read a (false) petition requesting hehand power back to the senate. Caesar was intercepted on the steps ofthe forum where he was attacked and stabbed 23 times. It is said his lastwords were “Et tu Brutus (even you, Brutus)”. The aftermath saw Romeengaged in civil war between the supporters of Caesar - Mark Antonyand Octavian (the Second Triumvirate), and his assassins MarcusJunius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. The wars came to a head at the Battle of Philippi in 42BC where theforces of Antony and Octavian were victorious. This Superb Gold Stater was struck the Thracian Dynast of Koson to pay Brutus’troops. The design shows Brutus as Proconsul accompanied by two lictors (bodyguards), his monogram before. The reverse shows an eagle with wings open, raising awreath with its left foot. A superb example! aUNC $1,950.00

By 1976 the life of the $1 note was less than seven months. This meant over 100 million pieces had to be printed each year toensure supply. Note Printing decided to experiment with alternative papers to see if a longer lasting alternative could be found. Anew, heavy duty paper named "Double Fold" was used to print 500,000 notes. At the same time 500,000 notes were printed on thenormal "Single Fold" paper. The idea was to issue a mixture of the two types andcompare their wear qualities. The prefix DBP wasselected for the test. Serial numbers 0000001 to 500000were "Double Fold" and serials 500001 to 999999 were"Single Fold". The notes were released together inHobart, Perth and Brisbane. When compared at the end of their life it was found thatthe more expensive "Double Fold" paper was onlymarginally better and did not warrant the extra expense. So "Single Fold" paper was used for further issues. However, the cost of the production of the $1 note again came to the fore in the1980's and in 1984 the $1 coin was introduced to replace the note. This Rare Complete Bundle of 100 bundle runs DBP 427701 to DBP 427800. McDonald catalogue value is $250.00 per note!

Aussie Commemorative 20 Cents

In 1995 Note Printing Australia released two special notes to markthe end of the Paper $50 and the introduction of the Polymer $50. The $50 Polymer note featured the signatures Fraser-Evans and RedSerials along with the date of first issue - 4 October 1995 -overprinted on the back.

The Paper $50 was particularly interesting. It too features Red Serialnumbers and for the only time the serials are in the AA95 formatused on the Polymer notes rather than the three letter prefix used onother paper $50.

But what makes these notes so special is that both notes haveidentical serial numbers!

Only 900 of each note was printed so they all have very lowserial numbers.

We have 4 Pairs available. Very Rare!
