MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2013 732-747-8060 $ TDN Home Page Click Here NEW-LOOK KEESEP BEGINS TODAY The world's biggest yearling auction, the Keeneland September Sale, begins its 12-day run today with a new look that officials hope serve sellers and buyers alike. For the first time in Keeneland's history, Book 1 will be stretched to four sessions, running today through Thursday with action getting underway at noon each day. This Friday, Sept. 13, will be dark, followed by Books 2-5, each consisting of two sessions that begin at 10:00 a.m. daily. AAs everyone knows, we've been tweaking this sale to try to get a format that works, and we hope and anticipate this will,@ said Keeneland=s Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. AHaving 219 horses selling each day [during Book 1] gives buyers enough time to get around and look at them all, and allows consignors to market their horses. Starting at noon is a great idea that was suggested by one of our consignors; it gives buyers an extra hour in the morning.@ It's the third significant change in format in as many years at September. Book 1 was held over two evening sessions in 2011, beginning on a Sunday night. Last year, a slimmed down Book 1 was held over a single session, followed by a three-session Book 2. Russell said the most recent change reflects a trend at sales that has embraced a more-is-better attitude when it comes to catalog size--so long as there is quality throughout, of course. AIt's the way the market is going," said Russell. ASelect, boutique sales seem to no longer be in vogue. People seem happier to go out and discover their own horses. It's a factor of the market; it's the kind of format people like, and we like it, because it gets all kinds of buyers out there looking at these horses. Hopefully, we'll have major end-users and pinhookers and foreign buyers out there at the same time.@ That certainly appeared to be the case this weekend on the sales grounds, which were packed with shoppers who arrived early and stayed late. "This is going to be a good sale,@ predicted Gainesway=s Michael Hernon. AIn the past few years, people were sort of hesitant during Book 1, and with Book 2 there would be a lot of energy and atmosphere. Now, the atmosphere is good right from kickoff. I think this was the way to go. It will be interesting to see how the new format plays out, but I'd say we're looking at a strong market.@ Cont. p3 ‘DOLL’ TO DEFEND GREEN JACKET The GII Presque Isle Downs Masters, to be run this evening in Erie, has proven to be a powerful prep race for the GI Breeders= Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Last year=s heroine Groupie Doll (Bowman=s Band), 2011 winner Musical Romance (Concorde=s Tune), and 2009 victress Informed Decision (Monarchos) all won the Masters before taking home the hardware at both the Breeders= Cup and Eclipse Awards. The Buff and Fred Bradley homebred is heavily favored at 6-5 on the morning line. Judy the Beauty (Ghostzapper), however, could give Groupie Doll a run for her money. KEENELANDSEPTEMBERYearling Sale

Sept. 9-12 ! 12 p.m. 14-21st ! 10am

NEW-LOOK KEESEP BEGINS TODAY cont. from p1 A total of 3,908 yearlings have been catalogued atSeptember. That's an 8.4% jump from last year'scatalog, which numbered 3,604, but still well off the4,319 horses that were cataloged in 2011. By and large, it's been a successful year of sellinghorses in America. Most of the juvenile-in-training salesenjoyed across-the-board gains, and that translated wellonce the yearling sale season began. At Fasig-TiptonJuly, average was up 10.4% to $89,785, while themedian rose 20%, to $72,000. At Fasig's SaratogaSale, average fell a modest 1.3%, to $295,093, but themedian was up 11.1%, to $250,000. The selectportion of the OBS August Sale, meanwhile, sawaverage jump 25.7% to $55,058; the median was up28.6%, to $45,000. Importantly, the buy-back rate ateach sale was down. "The 2-year-old sales were very strong, and that'scontinued on to the yearling sales so far," said Russell."We hope the momentum carries. We talked aboutsupply and demand, and I think that's key. Supply isdown, and there's a lot of interest out there. I'm veryhappy with the quality of the catalog we have here, andtalking to the people out there, they seem to like whatthey're seeing."

September Standouts... September isn't necessarily the type of sale thatrelies on timely updates to boost its status--itsreputation goes well beyond that--but that doesn'tmean sales officials can't point out several big wins inrecent weeks. Last year's renewal has already produced22 black-type winners, including a quartet of Grade Iwinners. Lane's End sold Strong Mandate (Tiznow),winner of the GI Hopeful S. at Saratoga Sept. 2, toRobert Baker and William Mack for $200,000.

Jeff Treadway paid a little less thanthat--$185,000--for subsequent GI Spinaway S. heroineSweat Reason (Street Sense), who was sold byBettersworth Westwind Farms. Mersad MetanovicBloodstock acquired the Warrendale-consigned She's aTiger (Tale of the Cat) for $150,000 roughly 50 weeksbefore she won the GI Del Mar Debutante S. Aug. 31.And Cromwell Bloodstock paid $95,000 for No NayNever (Scat Daddy), a Paramount Sales grad whoshipped in to win the G1 Darley Prix Morny at DeauvilleAug. 18. The 2011 September Sale, meanwhile, can boast ofhaving turned out a pair of eventual Classic winners inthe form of GI Preakness S. winner Oxbow (AwesomeAgain), a $250,000 colt from Burleson Farm'sconsignment who sold to Bluegrass Hall rep EddieKane; and the GI Belmont S. winner Palace Malice(Curlin), a $25,000 Lane's End grad who sold to ColinBrennan, agent. "Our grads have really outshone themselves," saidRussell. "We won two Classics this year, and have nowwon nine of the last 12 Triple Crown races. Then thesummer opened up, and we had 15 Grade or Group 1winners, including the winners of the Travers [Will TakeCharge], the King's Bishop [Capo Bastone], and theTest S. [Sweet Lulu]. It's a tremendous achievement." Russell said it's been rewarding, too, to see longtimeKeeneland clients, such as Baker, Mack and Will TakeCharge's owner Willis Horton, and younger clients likeCromwell's Gatewood Bell and Mersad Metanovic, realize success at September. "The great thing about September is you get achance to sell to such a broad range of people," saidRussell. "Mr. Mack, Mr. Baker and Mr. Horton areregulars who have bought successful horses herebefore, and it's great. But it's also great to see thisyounger generation coming up and having success, too." One of Godolphin=s stalwarts who has his day nowand then, Lost In the Moment enjoyed a peak here withMickael Barzalona timing his run to perfection in thisvaluable prize. Runner-up in the 2011 G2 GoodwoodCup and a close-up sixth in that year=s G1 MelbourneCup, the bay managed a third placing in theG2 Lonsdale Cup last term and came back in similarform this season when taking the Listed Fred Archer S.over 12 furlongs at Newmarket June 29. Kept at thattrip for Goodwood=s G3 Glorious S., he was runner-upin that Aug. 2 contest before running third over anextended 13 furlongs in the G3 Geoffrey Freer S. atNewbury Aug. 17. Held up towards the rear early in customary fashionas his compatriot Ambivalent was allowed a soft lead,he looked out of contention when driven inside the finalquarter, but gradually ate up the deficit when switchedoutside and swamped the dueling fillies in the last 50yards. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented, AHe hasrun a huge race to win like that. He was behind, butfinished well and has the class to succeed over a mileand a half, though he might be better at two miles. LostIn the Moment seems to be improving still at the age ofsix. There are no plans at the moment for him, but wewill bring him home and see how he comes out of thisvictory.@

Prix La Rochette Result cont. With the attention focused mainly on the two J “TDN Rising Stars” J Decathlete and Daraybi (Fr)(Street Cry {Ire}), Niarchos homebred Karakontie cameout best in this Classics pointer. Held up in last early byOlivier Peslier from his wide draw, the homebredmarked Decathlete and had prime position as that rivalwas committed on the front end with a furlongremaining. Taking his measure inside the final 75meters, he was pushed out to assert for a snugsuccess. Daraybi found his best stride too late afterbeing boxed in for much of the straight. Prix De Lutece result cont. His Highness The Aga Khan=s broodmare band isseemingly able to produce at least one top-class stayerin almost every crop of foals, and Valirann may be thelatest to emerge after mastering his rivals here. Cominginto this off successes in a 12-furlong conditions raceat Vichy July 15 and a more competitive affair over a 1 11/16-mile trip at Deauville Aug. 2, the bay disputedthe lead initially before accepting some cover byhalfway. Shuffled back by the home turn, he had someground to make up, but when angled wide, was able toproduce a surge which took him past the spirited fillyLucky Look in the shade of the post. Connections arepointing towards the G2 Prix Chaudenay back at thisvenue Oct. 5.

Emollient Breezes Towards Garden City... Juddmonte Farms= Emollient (Empire Maker), alreadya Grade I winner on two surfaces, breezed six furlongsSunday morning in 1:14.12 over the Belmont turfcourse in advance of her appearance in Saturday=s GIGarden City S. at the Long Island oval. Winner of halfof her eight career starts, the homebred overcame awide draw to crush her rivals in the GI Central BankAshland S. at Keeneland in April and added a victory inthe GI American Oaks over the summer at HollywoodPark. Those efforts sandwiched a dull sixth in the GIIBlack-Eyed Susan S. on the dirt May 17. "She'd run sowell on the synthetic at Keeneland," said Mott of thedecision to try turf in the American Oaks. "We'dworked her on the turf and that went extremely well.So we decided to try her away from dirt, sinceobviously that wasn't working out. Empire Makersseem to run very well on the synthetic, but they can bedirt or turf as well," he added. "They can do anything, you just have to test them out. You see a lot of themwin at Keeneland when you put them on synthetic, which she did. She's been good enough to win on allthree, but at this point in time I'd say she's best onturf, or synthetic." Among those set to oppose Emollient in the GardenCity are GI Del Mar Oaks winner Discreet Marq(Discreet Cat); Caroline Thomas (Giant=s Causeway),last-out upsetter of the GII Lake Placid S.; Lake Placidand GII Lake George S. runner-up Watsdachances (Ire)(Diamond Green {Fr}); and Alterite (Fr) (Literato {Fr}),runner-up in this year=s G1 Prix Saint-Alary and makingher U.S. debut for owner Martin Schwartz and trainerChad Brown.

Breeders’ Cup Options for Futurity Winner... Solitary Ranger (U S Ranger), who broke his maidenin style by taking Saturday=s GIII Arlington-WashingtonFuturity by 5 1/2 lengths, has the Breeders= Cup as along-term goal, but trainer Wayne Catalano has yet todetermine what surface the colt will appear on. AHelooks pretty good [Sunday],@ said the conditioner, whowas winning the Futurity for the third time since 2009.AWe=ll probably look at the [GI Dixiana] Breeders=Futurity [at Keeneland Oct. 5] after this. We liked himall along. He=s been breezing very well.@ Solitary Rangerwas a debut second over the Keeneland Poly Apr. 7,then had the misfortune of hooking subsequent G1 PrixMorny hero No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) in an Apr. 26heat and rounded out the exacta. Saturday=s race washis first in over 19 weeks.

But despite the success on the synthetic track,Catalano has a surface switch in the back of his mind, potentially even on Breeders= Cup day. AI think we=ll beeventually trying the turf with him. But, right now, ourmain goal is to get him to the Breeders= Cup,@ the >Cat-man= confirmed. The Louisiana native also reported theEclipse Thoroughbred Partners= Battlefield Angel (ProudCitizen), a troubled sixth in the Arlington-WashingtonLassie S. Saturday, is also likely to be Keeneland-boundfor a start in the GI Darley Alcibiades S. Oct. 4. Shecould face a rematch in that two-turn test with Lassievictress She=s Offlee Good (Offlee Wild).

Kazeem Fine After Champion Eclipse... Trainer Roger Charlton yesterday reported Al Kazeem(GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to be none the worse for his defeatin Saturday=s G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown.Runner-up to The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the 10-furlong feature, John Deer=s homebred 5-year-oldwas suffering his second consecutive reversal afterfinishing third in the G1 Juddmonte International. AI waspleased with the run and that he reversed the form atYork with Trading Leather,@ he told PA Sport. AHe wasjust beaten by a very good filly on the day. I expect wewill see what happens next weekend in all the trials andmake the right decision [about his target].@Approach Continues to Thrive... J “TDN Rising Star” J Dawn Approach (Ire)(New Approach {Ire}) was the subject of an upbeatbulletin from trainer Jim Bolger yesterday as he buildstowards the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot.Godolphin=s G1 2000 Guineas and G1 St James=sPalace S. winner returned a dirty scope after his latestfifth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville Aug.11 but is firmly back on track for his mile target onQIPCO Champions= Day Oct. 19. AAll=s been well sinceabout 10 days ago, and he=s at the top of his game atthe moment, so we=ll start getting him ready for Ascotshortly,@ his conditioner said. AHe was scoped two daysbefore the Deauville race and he was clean and the dayafter the race he wasn=t. It=s reasonable to assume thathe had mucus when he was running and that wouldaccount for his run.@

Universal Injured... Abdullah Al Mansoori=s G2 Jockey Club S. and G2Princess of Wales=s S. victor Universal (Ire) (Dubawi{Ire}) has suffered a career-threatening injury at trainerMark Johnston=s Yorkshire base. The 4-year-oldchestnut, who was a last-out fifth in the July 27 G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot, fractured a pastern during morning exercise yesterday. Cont. p17

Racetrack roundup cont. AUniversal, the highest-rated horse in our yard, fractured his pastern on the gallops this morning,@commented trainer Mark Johnston. AHe is travelling toNewmarket Equine Hospital where surgeon Ian Wrightwill operate. I am in Lexington for the forthcomingKeeneland yearling sales and so is owner Abdullah AlMansoori. I have just spoken to him on the >phone and,as he so aptly put it, we are both numbed. Our dreamsof Group 1 glory for this admirably progressive horseare shattered. It was our intention that Universal wouldrun in the Irish St Leger next weekend, followed by theCanadian International and the Japan Cup. With such atough horse, it never entered our heads that injurycould stop him. It brings back memories of Fruits ofLove, who fractured his pelvis on the eve of the firstKeeneland sale I ever attended. I can only dream thatUniversal=s accident will have such a happy outcomeand that he might race successfully again.@

Leger Green Light For Talent... Trainer Ralph Beckett has given the go-ahead forTalent (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) to take part inSaturday=s G1 Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster. Notraced since finishing last in the G1 Irish Oaks at TheCurragh July 20, James Rowsell and Mark Dixon=shomebred G1 Epsom Oaks heroine pleased in aracecourse gallop at Kempton on Friday. AShe workedat Kempton because the grass gallop at home is verydry and therefore very quick, so we haven=t been ableto get on the grass,@ Beckett explained. AShe=s in goodnick and I=m hoping we=ll be able to run. I=ll see how weare early in the week and we=ll plan away from there.I=d like to run her.@
