SOUND NOTESFall 2013

What is sound?

Sound is the movement of longitudinal waves through air or other mediums.

Sound = Longitudinal

What is a medium?

Any substance like AIR, WATER or STEEL.

(GAS, LIQUID, OR SOLID)

Do you think that sound waves would travel faster in water or pancake syrup? Why?

Sound cannot travel in a vacuum, like space. Why not?

Talk to your shoulder partner…

Not all sounds are the same…

The pitch you hear depends on the frequency of the sound wave.

Frequency = vibrations / second

High pitch= LOTS of vibrations / second

Low pitch= FEW vibrations / second

When a drummer hits a cymbal, it vibrates. The cymbal has kinetic energy.

Draw a diagram of a sound wave moving from a cymbal to a person’s ear.

Drawing:

AIR PARTICLES

Fill in the Blanks

The __Motion__________ energy of the vibrating ____________ passes to the air molecules.

The energy in the air spreads out and is detected by your _____________ as ______________.

CYMBAL

EARSOUND

Activity #1:

Touch side of your throat and say “ahh”.

Write your OBSERVATIONS! What do you feel?

What do you hear?

What is the medium?

What happens to the medium when the sound wave travels through it?

Activity #2:

Tuning Fork and Salt

Make your OBSERVATIONS! What do you see?

What do you hear?

What is the medium?

What happens to the medium when the sound wave travels through it?

Review Questions!

Write your answers on your blank sheet of paper.

You may use your notes

1. You go to a coffee shop and listen to a

guy play guitar. Draw a diagram

illustrating why you hear the music.

2. Explain your diagram by filling in the blanks below. (use the following words): kinetic, air particles, vibrates, ear, longitudinal, sound.

When the guy plays the guitar, the _________ energy of the strings transfers energy to the _____________as ____________energy causing them to move in a ____________ wave.

The longitudinal wave travels all the way to my ___________, where it _________ the ear hairs inside and my brain registers the vibrations as music.

3. What do sound waves need to exist?

4. What determines if a pitch will sound high or low?

2. Explain your picture.

When the guy plays the guitar, the kinetic energy of the strings transfers energy to the air particles as sound energy causing them to move in a longitudinal wave.

The longitudinal wave travels all the way to my ear, where it vibrates the ear hairs inside and my brain registers the vibrations as music.

3. What do sound waves need to exist?

Sounds waves require a medium or particles.

+1 point

4. What determines if a pitch will sound high or low?

The higher the frequency of the sound wave, the higher the pitch. The lower the frequency of the sound wave, the lower the pitch.

The frequency (speed) of the wave determines the pitch of the sound.
