As Sabarimala continued tobe on the boil over the Supreme Court verdict granting unrestricted entry to women into the temple, thestance adopted by keyplayers, the Congress, theBJP and the CPI(M), presentsan interesting scenario.
The Left DemocraticFront constituents, mainlythe CPI(M) and the CPI, continue to stand pat on theirstated position that the Kerala government is constitutionally obliged to honourthe verdict and provide protection to all believers arriving for a darshan.
The Congress and the BJPmay have dithered initiallybut have shifted their position subsequently by declaring solidarity with the faithful, sensing the politicalsetback they would have suffered otherwise.
The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) that manages the temple too has reneged from its toughposition and offered to go
the extra mile to end the impasse.
Difficult timeThe Congress and the BJPhave had a difficult time articulating their views aftertheir national leadershipshad hailed the verdict as progressive and one that ensures gender equality.
Leader of the OppositionRamesh Chennithala and BJPState president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai were at a loss ex
plaining the apparent contradiction in the stanceadopted nationally while theState units aligned with thebelievers.
In due course, the lattermanaged to win the grudging endorsement of their national leaders.
CPI(M) stanceCPI(M) State committeemember AnathalavattomAnandan recalls how successive State governments led
by the LDF had implementedthe High Court verdict banning women’s entry to thetemple.
Congress focusCongress publicity cell convener K. Muraleedharan saysthe party stands by the affidavit the State governmentfiled in 2016 seeking to stickto the rituals of the temple. But he admits that the national leadership’s directionto Congress activists to join
the protests without partyflag would prove costly.
“We are aware of this reality. Hence, the focus of ouragitation would be on the demand to promulgate an ordinance while supporting thedemand of the faithful toprotect the rituals of the temple,” he says.
BJP State spokespersonM.S. Kumar admits thatthere was initial dithering onthe party stance, especiallyin the wake of RSS generalsecretary Suresh Joshi welcoming the verdict. “Thatmight be due to a minorlapse in comprehending thetraditions of the temple. Now the national leaders ofthe RSS and the BJP reiteratethe need to protect the temple’s tradition. The State government can now seek opinion from eminent jurists tosettle the issue,” he says.
But who will ultimatelybenefit from the noholdsbarred campaign to gain political mileage from the issueis something that exercisesthe minds of leaders and observers alike.
Parties dillydally on Sabarimala row State units in Kerala had a tough time in explaining the divergent stances of national leaderships

The sex scandal had resurfaced to haunt the UDF

The Sivarajan Commission that probed the socalled solar scam hadopened a Pandora’s box ofsexual allegations against agalaxy of UDF leaders whenit submitted its findings tothe Pinarayi Vijayan government in September 2017.
The Cabinet had accepted the commission’s recommendation to charge thosewho had sought and received sexual favours fromMs. Nair as an illegal gratification to back her investment schemes.

Protests triggered by the Supreme Court verdict granting entry for women of all ages to Sabarimala temple arefeared to rock the financialbase of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and affect the functioning of 1,188temples managed by it.
As many as 1,249 templesfrom Parassala in the capitalto Perumanam in Thrissurcome under the board. TDBcommissioner N. Vasu toldThe Hindu here that onlyabout 61 temples, including
Sabarimala, were selfsufficient and the rest were heavily reliant on the incomeearned from other templesfor their sustenance.
That means any dip in income from Sabarimalawould debilitate the functioning of 1,118 temples extending from the Mahadevatemple at Parassala to theSankaranarayana temple atPerumanam.
Salary revisionThe monthly salary and pension bills of the board havebeen estimated at ₹500crore. It has about 5,000 employees and 4,000 pensioners. The present board hadrevised the salary and otherbenefits of employees and
this would add to its financial burden.
A major dip in returnsmay even affect the conductof routine rituals and pujasin temples.
In addition to these are aslew of maintenance, construction and other civilworks that have been commissioned and tendered invarious temples.
The board would beforced to defer works thathave not yet commencedand put a halt to those thathave already been commissioned.
Temple impasse may hit TDB finances Fall in income may affect the conduct of routine rituals and pujas in 1,188 shrines
As many as 1,249 templescome under the TDB.
