JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSDo’s and Don’ts to help

your game – Part 4By Brent Manley

DOSupport with support. At our club a couple of

months ago, I held♠A K 10 9 8 ♥J 8 4 ♦J 10 5 ♣4 3

Partner opened 1♥ and I foolishly bid 1♠, Partner rebid 2♦ and I was stuck. I couldn’t bid 3♥ with 9 high-card points. That could get us too high if partner had a minimum for her opener.

I thought I had no choice but to bid 2♥, a “preference” bid rather than a raise. My partner had every right to conclude that I had a doubleton heart.

Of course, we missed game, which partner would have bid had I done the right thing and raised directly to 2♥ (she was 5-5 in the red suits). My trumps were not so great, but I did have three of them, and the ♥J helped partner keep her trump losers to one.

Had I held 10 HCP, say the ♥Q instead of the jack, my 1♠ bid probably would have been okay because I could have jumped to 3♥ at my next turn to bid to show a limit raise with just three trumps.

The advice to support with support also applies when partner overcalls. If you have anything remotely resembling a raise and your right-hand opponent doesn’t jack up the bidding, raise! That might be all partner needs to bid a game or take a profitable sacrifice. It also takes up the opponents’ bidding space, especially when your suit is spades.

DON’TStrain to make a limit raise. I heard this piece

of advice while playing against the great Oswald Jacoby many years ago. He was discussing a bid made by an opponent on a previous round. I took that advice to heart and found it to be invaluable over the years.

Think of a hand such as this♠Q J 7 ♥K 9 6 2 ♦4 3 ♣K 8 3 2

A former partner of mine often “upgraded” hands like this to limit-raise status, counting the doubleton diamond as a “support” point to get to 10. It almost never worked out. Look at it this way: If partner’s hand is good enough for your side to make game with this hand as dummy, she will make a move and you can bid game in good conscience.

DOCuebid as “advancer” (overcaller’s partner)

when your hand with trump support has 10 or more “support” points. I’ve seen lots of new players make simple raises with hands much too good for that action. They seem not to be aware of how they

can show a better-than-average raise of partner’s suit.

Say partner overcalls a 1♥ opener with 1♠ and the next player passes. You hold:♠A 10 5 ♥7 6 5 3 ♦A K 10 7 ♣5 4

You have dull shape, but you have three trumps and three quick tricks. You must bid 2♥ to show that your raise carries some weight. If you make a simple raise of 2♠ you could easily miss game.

Take all your chances, No. 4

By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: North ♠ 6 5 3 Vul: N-S ♥ A K Q 9 8 4 ♦ A Q ♣ A 10

♠ K Q 10 ♥ 10 2 ♦ J 10 9 8 4 ♣ K 4 3

Your partner opens 1♥, East passes and you respond 1NT. Your partner knows how much you like to be declarer, so he gives up on his heart suit and raises you to 3NT. West leads the ♣Q. Plan the play.

Solution Your partner came to the right place. When

you see the dummy, you wonder if partner would have found the 100% play for nine tricks that you have spotted.

Win the ♣A and play the ♦A and ♦Q. If someone wins the trick, you have nine tricks

without needing any spade tricks: four diamonds, two clubs and at least three hearts.

Say the ♦Q holds. No problem. Lead a low heart taking out a little insurance against 4-1 (or even 5-0) hearts. If hearts are 4-1, someone will win the jack, but you now have 9 tricks in the bank: five hearts, two diamonds and two clubs.

If hearts are 5-0 and they allow you to win the ♥10, knock out the ♦K while you still have the ♣K as a hand entry (you take 10 tricks). The key is to keep a later club entry to your hand to get to the established diamonds if they take the ♦Q with the king. The full deal: ♠ 6 5 3 ♥ A K Q 9 8 4 ♦ A Q ♣ A 10 ♠ A J 7 4 ♠ 9 8 2 ♥ 3 ♥ J 7 6 5 ♦ 5 3 2 ♦ K 7 6 ♣ Q J 9 8 5 ♣ 7 6 2 ♠ K Q 10 ♥ 10 2 ♦ J 10 9 8 4 ♣ K 4 3 Diana Phillips, 14, and her brother, 12-year-

The Official Record Part 1A primer on the ACBL’s formal disciplinary

procedure at tournamentsBy Christina Van Leeuwen

Many clubs and tournaments employ the ACBL’s Zero Tolerance Policy to deal with instances of unacceptable behavior. Unfortunately, there are sometimes incidents of a more serious nature or patterns of offensive behavior that must be addressed in a more severe manner.

All ACBL units and districts are required to have a recorder. A recorder’s responsibilities include receiving and investigating both reports of objectionable conduct and allegations of unethical behavior that occur within their jurisdiction. For example, a complaint regarding an incident that occurred during a sectional tournament should be sent to the sponsoring unit’s recorder.

There is also a national recorder, Sam Whitten, who is a full-time employee of the ACBL.

Incidents can be reported using a player memo, also known as a recorder form. You can obtain one of these forms from a tournament director, but any written complaint (including email) that is sent to the recorder will be accepted in lieu of an actual player memo. The complaint should include your name and contact information, the name of your partner, the name of your opponents (noting if one or both are responsible for the incident in question), a complete description of what occurred and thorough documentation of the hand in question. Reporting any behavioral violation or questionable bridge action during a tournament should always go to a TD first. The TD will ensure that the complaint reaches the appropriate parties, including the recorder.

Once a recorder has received a complaint, he will investigate the complaint by talking to the individuals involved and any witnesses that can be located. Then the recorder will make one of three determinations. If the complaint and subsequent investigation uncovers a violation that the recorder believes is serious enough to bring before a disciplinary committee, he will present the complaint to the unit or district president, who will become the charging party and will ask the unit or district disciplinary chair to convene a disciplinary committee to hold a hearing. This process and the procedures followed by the disciplinary committee are outlined in the ACBL Code of Disciplinary Regulations (CDR).

If, after completing the investigation, the recorder is unconvinced that the complaint warrants a disciplinary committee but feels the incident is still troubling, he will keep this complaint on file and forward a copy to the National Recorder’s office. This complaint may then be used in a future disciplinary case as part of a pattern of behavior demonstrated by the subject. This is known as recording the complaint.

Lastly, if the recorder does not feel that a violation has taken place, he can choose not to record

the incident and the complaint will go no further. While recorder complaints and investigations are confidential, the recorder will notify the parties involved which of these three actions he has taken with the complaint.

Complaints fall into one of two general categories: behavioral and bridge. Behavioral complaints are fairly self-explanatory, and the recorder must simply decide if the behavior warrants a disciplinary committee or if it should simply be recorded in the event that more such complaints are presented about the same individual in the future.

Bridge complaints should include as much detail about the deal as possible, including the exact hands (hand records are very useful for this purpose). One should also include the bidding, the opening lead and, when relevant, the play of the hand. Recorders use these player memos documenting unusual action taken at the table to build cases against partnerships that are using covert methods to signal information to each other. Prearranged partnership collusion by means of signaling to exchange information is the most serious form of cheating that exists within bridge. While a single complaint is very rarely sufficient to prove such a case, a number of hands demonstrating unusual actions can bring a pattern to light. It will be up to an ethics committee to determine if this pattern proves cheating. It is important to keep in mind that public accusations of cheating are not tolerated. All such accusations must be made in private to a tournament director or recorder. To do otherwise is a violation of the CDR.

The CDR, Recorder Regulations, and many other resources outlining the ACBL Recorder System are available on the ACBL website at acbl.org/tournaments_page/ethics-and-discipline/.

The ACBL Recorder Office is more than happy to discuss any issue members may have encountered while playing in an ACBL-sanctioned event and direct them to the proper authority under ACBL regulations. You can reach the National Recorder’s office at [email protected] or 662–253–3146.

Tough leadsBy Barry Rigal

As this deal from the first final session of the Nail Life Master Open Pairs shows, anyone who tells you that they like leading against 1NT – All Pass or 1NT – 3NT – All Pass is a liar or a masochist. Dlr: South ♠ A J 4 2 Vul: E-W ♥ 8 3 ♦ A 5 2 ♣ 9 7 4 3 ♠ K 9 5 3 ♠ 10 8 6 ♥ A K 9 ♥ Q 7 2 ♦ 10 6 ♦ Q 8 7 3 ♣ A K 8 5 ♣ J 10 6 ♠ Q 7 ♥ J 10 6 5 4 ♦ K J 9 4 ♣ Q 2 West North East South Pass 1NT All Pass

Typical developments on a board like this are for North to lead a spade (“fourth-highest from longest and strongest, partner”). Now declarer sets up a spade and if the defense shifts to clubs they might concede 150.

An initial club lead may not look much better, especially if North leads the ♣7 and declarer, knowing the ♣Q is onside, plays low from dummy. At the table, West put in the ♣10 to the queen and ace. A club to the jack let declarer advance the ♠10: queen, king, ace. Now North shifted to the ♥8 to the 10 and king. Declarer then led a spade to the 8. That gave him seven tricks, but when he led a third spade my partner, David Yoon, could discard the ♥J. That made it easy for me to count declarer with three points in spades and A-K in clubs and hearts, so I led a low diamond to the jack. Partner returned a diamond to my ace and a third round of diamonds gave us four tricks in the suit to hold declarer to 90.

Metcalf

One of his co-workers started a lunch-time game at the hospital and eventually told the group about the duplicate club at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Metcalf went to the club and almost immediately joined the ACBL and started playing every week.

Before long, he was filling in for MIT club directors when there was a need. In the late 1990s, he was invited to run a game at a synagogue near where he lives. Things went so well with Metcalf in charge that it quickly turned into a full-time club. He is still the chief director at what is now the Newton Bridge Club, with a weekly table count of 100.

Metcalf soon attracted the attention of the ACBL and started part-time TD work. He became a full-time employee in January of this year. He was promoted to associate national TD rank in the summer of this year.

At the Fall NABC, he worked a couple of days with the services crew before returning to his regular TD duties. The services-crew stint made a big impression on Metcalf. “It’s a great team,” he says. “I learned a lot. It was a fantastic experience.”

Metcalf says he still likes to play bridge, “but I love watching (a tournament) all come together. I really like making big things work.”

Thanks to his skills in programming and experience with spread sheets, Metcalf has won the admiration of his peers. Says TD Terry Lavender, “I call him Mr. Spreadsheet,” a reference to Metcalf’s creation of a method to assure that masterpoint awards at tournaments are accurate.

In January of this year, Cotterman worked with Metcalf on a bridge cruise hosted by Larry Cohen. Cotterman says Cohen reported after the cruise that the TD crew “was the best he had seen. David did a wonderful job even though it was his first cruise.”

Metcalf has been the director in charge at the Youth NABCs for the past four years. It’s a job at which he shines, in no small measure because of the atmosphere. “It’s the best,” he says. “Those young players have more fun than the rest of the tournament put together. I just sit there and follow along.”

Interesting pointsBy Barry Rigal

This deal from the second final session of the Nail Life Master Open Pairs produced numerous points of technical and practical applications. Dlr: South ♠ A J 10 5 3 Vul: Both ♥ K J 6 ♦ 9 6 5 4 ♣ 6 ♠ K 2 ♠ 6 4 ♥ Q 9 2 ♥ A 8 5 4 2 ♦ A Q 2 ♦ K J ♣ K Q 8 7 4 ♣ A 10 5 3 ♠ Q 9 8 7 ♥ 10 7 ♦ 10 8 7 3 ♣ J 9 2

First, when West opens 1NT should North overcall? My money says no, but I’m getting old. If, as happened at the table, North bids 2♦ (diamonds and a major), transfer lebensohl works far better than the regular variety: 3♦ shows hearts, invitational or better, to get 4♥ played by West.

At the table, West played 3NT. North continued his aggressive campaign by leading the ♠J, and West won the ♠K. Now for the second technical point: There is a 100% safety play available in clubs – but only if you know one player cannot be short in clubs. In this case, you do. Lead low to the ace to guard against ♣J 9 6 2 with South, it being highly unlikely that North has four clubs. It doesn’t matter in this case, of course.

When you run your clubs, North pitches on heart, two spades and a diamond. South also discards diamonds so you can cash three diamonds to reach this ending: ♠ A 10 ♥ K J ♦ — ♣ — ♠ 2 ♠ 6 ♥ Q 9 2 ♥ A 8 5 ♦ — ♦ — ♣ — ♣ — ♠ Q 9 ♥ 10 7 ♦ — ♣ —

Now West can exit with the ♠6, and if South wants to take her partner off the end play, she had better overtake and shift to a heart!

The last technical point: par on this deal is minus 650 (11 tricks in hearts by West). You protect the ♠K and on a diamond lead win and cash the diamonds to discard a spade from dummy. Now, if you believe the ♥K is wrong based on the auction and are playing against a South who would never duck the ♥K, cross to dummy and lead a heart to the 9. North wins the ♥J to play the ♠A and another spade. You win in hand and pass the ♥Q to pin South’s ♥10. It’s a classic intra-finesse.

Cassel, of Roseville MN, played with Barry Purrington, Eagan MN, and Robert and Ellen Kent of Marina Del Ray CA. Their VP total was 129.83 to 118.05 for the runners-up – Corey Krantz and Rhoda Kratenstein of Delray Beach FL and Lesley Decker Lucas and Stephen Lucas of Woodbury NY.

The win broke a streak of 11 second-place finishes in national events for Ellen Kent. Two of her finishes as a runner-up occurred last year – the 10K Mixed Swiss and the 10K IMP Pairs.

mainstream. This deal came from early in the first qualifying session: Dlr: West ♠ Q 9 8 7 5 3 Vul: None ♥ 8 2 ♦ 5 ♣ K J 7 5 ♠ 4 ♠ A 6 ♥ A K Q ♥ 10 6 5 4 3 ♦ A J 10 9 8 6 2 ♦ K 7 4 3 ♣ A 9 ♣ Q 2 ♠ K J 10 2 ♥ J 9 7 ♦ Q ♣ 10 8 6 4 3

The West player opened his pretty collection with 1♦, and Cohen reached for the Stop card before bidding 2♠. East made a negative double, and now it was Bergen’s turn to reach for the Stop card, a prelude to bidding 4♠.

“It feels like old times,” said Cohen. The opponents brushed aside this barrage to

reach the diamond slam, but Bergen and Cohen were clearly comfortable together after just a few deals.

Many of the East-West players who came to Bergen and Cohen’s table were clearly charmed to be playing against the duo, a few even joining in the bidding commentary. When Bergen, as dealer, withdrew the Stop card from the bidding box, an opponent remarked, “Bergen is at the table!” Bergen, holding:♠ 10 9 8 ♥6 2 ♦A K 10 7 4 2 ♣8 3

bid 2♦. His hand eventually became the dummy in a heart contract, but he proudly displayed the diamond suit first, as if to silence his critics that he often preempted on junk.

The first session found the team below average (they scored 11.5), but the second session was above average (14.5), so the squad – captain Whipple, Bergen, Cohen, Gary Cohler and Billy Cohen, finished with a dead average score of 26. This total put them on the bubble for qualifying for today’s final. As part of an eight-way tie for the bottom qualifying position, the formula that determines who’s in and who’s not was not kind: They missed the cut.

Bergen and Cohen will have another shot at a title later this week, as they plan to enter the North American Swiss Teams.

The good, the bad . . .By Barry Rigal

Jason Feldman, playing with Tom Carmichael, was one of the few to achieve par on this deal from the second final session of the Nail Life Master Open Pairs. Dlr: West ♠ A K Q 8 7 Vul: N-S ♥ 9 ♦ A K 6 5 3 2 ♣ A ♠ 5 4 ♠ J 9 3 ♥ A K J 7 5 4 ♥ 10 8 3 2 ♦ — ♦ 10 8 7 4 ♣ K 8 7 6 3 ♣ 9 5 ♠ 10 6 2 ♥ Q 6 ♦ Q J 9 ♣ Q J 10 4 2 West North East South 1♥ 2♥ (1) Pass 2♠ 3♣ 3♥ 4♥ 4♠ 5♥ 6♠ Pass Pass 7♥ Dbl All Pass

(1) Spades and a minorFeldman, West, knew North had a heart loser

from his final double, so the ♣A had to be wrong. The defenders played three rounds of spades. Feldman ruffed and ducked a club, felling the ace, ruffed the diamond return, drew one round of trumps then cross-ruffed the rest. That was three down. Easy game.

If that was good, the following from the same board was comic or tragic, depending on which way you looked at it. For obvious reasons, the names are withheld. West North East South 1♥ 2♥ (1) Pass 2♠ 3♣ 3♥ Dbl 4♠ 5♣ 5♥ Pass 5♠ Pass 6♠ All Pass

(1) Spades and diamondsWest took a long time before his final pass, but

he worked out that dummy would have a singleton heart. That convinced him to come up with the master play of underleading his ♥A K to partner’s presumed queen . . . missed it by that much!

How to Work Acrostics PuzzlesThe grid of the puzzle below is not a crossword;

it’s a quotation from a book written by a bridge Ace at age 32 … two years after winning his first of three Bermuda Bowls! The words in the quote don’t necessarily end at the right edge of each horizontal line; they only end when a black square follows a group of the numbered letters. And the unique thing

about acrostic puzzles is that the first letter of each clue answer, reading down from CLUE A through the final clue, will spell out the name of the book’s author … followed by the title of that book!

You will notice that ALL letters in the quote are numbered; these numbers are followed by a clue letter referral, which tells the solver which of the clue

answers will give you that particular letter.Working in both directions … from the clues to

the grid and vice versa… is the secret (and the fun!) in solving acrostics. Just keep plugging away, back and forth, and BOTH puzzles … the quote and the clue answers … can be solved eventually.

Enjoy yourselves! Joel Hoersch

Winning combinationExperienced players would agree that luck can

be a significant factor in success at pairs games. It’s also accepted that you’re not going to win basing your hopes completely on luck. Two boards played by Marion Michielsen and Zia Mahmood – winners of the Nail Life Master Open Pairs – illustrate both points.

This one is from the first final session. The luck for the winners came in the form of a weak two-bid by North on this board.

Dlr: North ♠ 10 9 4 2 Vul: Both ♥ Q 8 6 4 3 2 ♦ K ♣ 5 4 ♠ 7 6 ♠ K Q J 3 ♥ A J ♥ 10 7 5 ♦ 9 8 7 3 ♦ A 4 ♣ K J 10 3 2 ♣ A 9 8 6 ♠ A 8 5 ♥ K 9 ♦ Q J 10 6 5 2 ♣ Q 7 West North East South Zia Michielsen 2♥ Dbl Pass 3♣ (1) Pass Pass 3♥ Dbl All Pass

Players who employ lebensohl over weak two-bids that have been doubled can show some values with direct three-level bids. With bad hands, advancer bids 2NT to relay to 3♣ for further action. In the version of lebensohl Zia and Michielsen play, the 3♣ was not necessarily “positive.” His later double of 3♥ showed some high-card strength.

Michielsen started with the ♠K, taken by declarer with the ace. At trick two, declarer played a diamond to his king and Michielsen’s ace. She cashed two spade tricks, Zia discarding the ♣2 (encouraging), so she shifted to a low club. Zia won the ♣10 and put his partner back in with a club to the ace. Now Michielsen’s last spade was ruffed with dummy’s ♥9 and overruffed by Zia with the jack.

Zia exited with a diamond to dummy, and when declarer played the ♥K, Zia won and played yet another diamond, which would have promoted a trump trick for Michielsen had her original holding been as weak as ♥8 7 5 instead of ♥10 7 5.

The upshot was plus 1100 and all the matchpoints for the winners.

On the next deal, from the second final session,

Michielsen played skillfully to give herself the best chance for an overtrick, took advantage of a defensive error and made a good guess for another fine score.

Dlr: South ♠ A J Vul: E-W ♥ A K 10 8 7 4 ♦ J 10 5 ♣ K 3 ♠ Q 10 6 3 ♠ 9 7 5 ♥ J 5 ♥ 9 6 ♦ K Q 4 3 ♦ 9 7 ♣ 9 8 4 ♣ A Q J 10 7 6 ♠ K 8 4 2 ♥ Q 3 2 ♦ A 8 6 2 ♣ 5 2 West North East South Michielsen Zia Pass Pass 1♥ 3♣ 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

East led a low spade to the 2, queen and ace. Michielsen cashed the ♥A and ♠J, then played a heart to dummy’s queen, noting the 2-2 split in trumps. She cashed the ♠K, pitching a club, then ruffed a spade to hand and a put the ♣K on the table. East won the ace and could have held declarer to 10 tricks with a diamond shift, but East tried to cash another club. Michielsen ruffed and ran the ♦J. West won the ♦Q and was endplayed. A club exit would have allowed a ruff-sluff for the discard of a one of Michielsen’s two remaining diamonds. On the diamond return, Michielsen had to make a decision. Was West leading from the other diamond honor or the ♦9? Ultimately, she placed West with the two honors and put up the 10. That was plus 450 and 61 out of 64 matchpoints.

10K IMP Pairs starts todayThe 0–10,000 IMP Pairs, which made its

debut last year, starts today. The contest consists of two qualifying sessions and two final sessions and is limited to players with fewer than 10,000 masterpoints. It pays platinum points at 10% of the overall award up to a maximum of 10 platinum points.

The winners in 2015 were Spencer Jones and Theri Andino.

Sneaky leadOn this deal from the Saturday evening Swiss

teams, you arrive in 6♠ on the following auction: Dlr: West ♠ K 8 7 6 2 Vul: None ♥ A 10 ♦ 10 4 ♣ A Q 8 2

♠ A Q 9 5 ♥ 7 ♦ A K J 7 2 ♣ 10 6 3

West North East South 3♥ Dbl 4♥ 5♠ Pass 6♠ All Pass

West leads the ♣7. What’s your plan? The 7 could easily be a singleton, of course,

meaning that you’d need to set up diamonds to pitch two clubs from dummy. If diamonds are 3-3 or the ♦Q drops singleton or doubleton, you’re home (assuming trumps are not 4-0).

So after rising with the ♣A, you play a trump to the ace as both defenders follow, West dropping the 10. If you decide to draw the remaining trumps at this point (do you?), you find that East started with J-x-x. When you play the ♦A K, both defenders follow low, but when you ruff a round of diamonds in dummy, you discover West started with queen-fourth. Unable to set up the suit, you finish down two, minus 100.

When you get a chance to see the full deal, you realize your left-hand opponent – Jim Sternberg of Palm Beach Gardens FL – has been a sneaky guy, leading the ♣7 from K-7 doubleton: ♠ K 8 7 6 2 ♥ A 10 ♦ 10 4 ♣ A Q 8 2 ♠ 10 ♠ J 4 3 ♥ J 9 8 6 4 2 ♥ K Q 5 3 ♦ Q 8 6 2 ♦ 9 5 ♣ K 7 ♣ J 9 5 4 ♠ A Q 9 5 ♥ 7 ♦ A K J 7 2 ♣ 10 6 3

At the other table, Sternberg’s teammates stopped in 4♠ and made 11 tricks for plus 450. Going down in the cold slam means that instead of gaining 11 IMPs, you lost 11 for a 22-IMP swing. Oh, well. Next board.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a

director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Renew onlineDue to new laws that prevent ACBL staff from

manually recording credit card information, we ask that members who wishes to renew or reinstate their memberships using a credit card to do so online at www.acbl.org/join.

Acrostic solution

Mike Lawrence, “How to Read (Your Opponents’) Cards”

“When you cannot make a contract unless a certain card is in a certain place, then assume it is where it must be, and play the hand accordingly. You may find that on occasions you go down an extra trick, but if you look at the hand you will see that you could not have made your contract in any case.” – Mike Lawrence

not occur, the Board terminated the events.“Our primary concern with removing these

contests from the calendar is that foreign teams who used to enter these contests might no longer attend the NABCs. We hope they continue to do so by entering the pairs contests instead,” Subeck said.

The Wagar was the oldest women’s team contest on the ACBL calendar. It was first played in 1933 and was formerly contested for the Coffin Trophy. The modern contest was played for the Wagar Trophy, although it had undergone format and name changes. Until 1976, it was a four-session event scored by board-a-match. It was contested as a three-session championship until 1972, and it was held at the Fall NABC until 1963. It became part of the summer schedule in 1986. In 1976 the event became a North American Championship Women’s Knockout with Swiss qualifying. In 2014, the Board declassified the contest as an NABC+ event, meaning that a win in the event no longer qualified players for the title of Grand Life Master.

The Machlin was first played in 1982. It was also declassified as an NABC+ event in 2014.

Third hand plays high?By Barry Rigal

On this deal from the first final session of the Nail Life Master Open Pairs, I’m sure the developments were repeated at many tables. Dlr: South ♠ K 7 4 3 Vul: None ♥ — ♦ A 4 3 ♣ K 10 9 6 4 2 ♠ J 10 9 5 ♠ 6 2 ♥ K 8 4 3 ♥ A Q 10 6 2 ♦ K 10 9 5 2 ♦ J 8 ♣ — ♣ A Q J 8 ♠ A Q 8 ♥ J 9 7 5 ♦ Q 7 6 ♣ 7 5 3

In third chair, North opened 1♣, East overcalled 1♥, and now some competitive exchanges led to East declaring 3♥ or 4♥. Left to his own devices, 3♥ appears to hinge on the diamond guess, but at how many tables did South lead a low club and see North put up the king?

The point is that when dummy comes down, North knows South rates to have three clubs to the jack or queen or three low clubs. North’s play is irrelevant in the first case and rates to be so in the second case – declarer can surely establish diamonds or spades to obviate the need for ruffs. If, however, partner has led from three low clubs and the ♠A, declarer can pitch one spade on the opening lead and two more on the ♣Q and ♣J if North plays the king, limiting you to one spade trick on defense. And so it proved.

Yet another ‘play or defend’By Barry Rigal

Dlr: West ♠ 10 6 5 Vul: Both ♥ Q J 7 5 3 ♦ Q 8 2 ♣ 8 4 ♠ 8 ♠ J 7 4 3 ♥ 9 8 4 ♥ 10 2 ♦ A K 10 7 4 ♦ 6 5 3 ♣ A K 9 2 ♣ Q 10 5 3 ♠ A K Q 9 2 ♥ A K 8 ♦ J 9 ♣ J 7 6 West North East South 1♦ Pass Pass Dbl 2♣ 2♥ 3♣ 3♠ All Pass

At the table, West’s defense looks straightforward: two rounds of diamonds in case there is a ruff, then three rounds of clubs to tap dummy. Now declarer might well lead a spade to the ace, cross to a heart and finesse in spades if feeling inspired.

The defenders cannot do better against 3♥, which is par on the deal, but they can beat 3♠. It doesn’t do any good to play three rounds of clubs before diamonds if declarer views the trump layout correctly. The winning move is a heart lead to trick one. Declarer has to burn his heart entry early to take the spade finesse, and now he is left with three club losers so long as East wins the clubs for his side and kills the trumps in dummy.

Today’s Bridge Events

The farmers at Florida’s Natural Growers welcome you to Central Florida. We hope that you enjoy your time here in the Orlando area and we are proud to be a part of your tournament. Florida’s Natural isn’t your typical juice company. We’re a collection of cooperatives, family businesses and shippers who all share the same vision: to produce the freshest-tasting not-from-concentrate juice around. Our Not-from-Concentrate orange and grapefruit juice are from Florida groves less than 125 miles from our facilities in Lake Wales, Florida.

Florida’s Natural Growers is a cooperative of 14 grower organizations who represents nearly

1,000 individual citrus growers located throughout Florida. The farmers own more than 60,000 acres of Florida citrus and have more than 83 years of experience growing oranges and producing all-natural orange juice with a refreshing, straight-from-the-grove taste. Florida’s Natural growers own the land, the trees and the company. To learn more about Florida’s Natural growers, oranges and products, visit FloridasNatural.com or, if you have the time, stop by our Grove House Visitor Center, located less than an hour from your convention location at 20205 Hwy 27 North, Lake Wales, Florida.
