JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSThinking bridge

The first trick. Taking charge

Dlr: South ♠ 10 5 4 Vul: Both ♥ 9 2 ♦ A K Q ♣ K J 7 5 3 ♠ 7 6 ♠ 9 8 2 ♥ K Q 5 4 ♥ A 10 8 3 ♦ 9 7 4 ♦ 10 8 6 3 2 ♣ 10 9 6 2 ♣ A ♠ A K Q J 3 ♥ J 7 6 ♦ J 5 ♣ Q 8 4 West North East South 1♠ Pass 2♣ Pass 2♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

Opening lead: ♥K Bidding commentary: As South, treat a

solid five-card major suit as a six-card suit and bid accordingly.

Defensive commentary: As East, avoid the common defensive error of signaling interest or disinterest in the suit partner has led (♥K) before looking at the rest of the hand. Here you have the blank ♣A and would like a club ruff.

You can get it but you must overtake the ♥K, cash the ♣A, exit a heart to partner’s queen, and ruff the club return. Down one. If you look only at hearts, you are apt to signal encouragement to show the ace. Once partner continues a heart, goodbye club ruff, goodbye defeating 4♠. The lesson to be learned here is that third hand should take a moment to get an overview of the deal, not just the suit partner has led, before playing to the first trick.

Bridge Bucksand check cashing

Bridge Bucks and check-cashing services will be available outside the Coral Ballroom in the Mid-Pacific Center. Hours of operation are 9:30 to 10 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m.

Players may purchase Bridge Bucks using all major credit cards. There is a $500 limit daily on check cashing.

No cash concessionsThere will be no cash concessions at this NABC.

Food and beverage costs would have been quite high for the players. Many outlets, including the ABC stores, Wiki Wiki Market and Starbucks, offer a variety of beverages, sandwiches, salads, etc. at reasonable prices.

“We are all sharks,” Tara Fankhauser joked, describing the 49ers section. “I think everyone who starts bridge questions, ‘Why did I start this mental turmoil?’ I could be out on the beach right now.” Fankhauser, from Kauai, the Garden Island, answered her own question. “It’s good fun, I think. Healthy, good fun.”

It wasn’t Greenberg’s plan to have a family full of bridge players. “I was always opposed to children taking up bridge,” she says. “Bridge is better for people in their middle and later years. I had seen too many bright young people get waylaid by bridge.”

Accordingly, she tried to forbid her children from playing. They didn’t listen.

That pattern is starting to repeat itself in the next generation. Though Brad has tried to prevent his children from getting into bridge, his son Cian, 11, has been trying to learn. On Friday Cian played his first game ever with his uncle Andrew in the evening side game. Despite finishing last, “he had a wonderful experience,” Greenberg said.

Despite her protests, it’s clear she’s pleased so many in her family share her passion for the game.

After losing the battle against bridge, Greenberg had one other “rule” for her children when they became adults, and they ended up breaking that one too. “I wanted to keep everyone in New York,” she said. Jill lives in Las Vegas, Brad in Denver and Andrew near San Francisco.

At least she can count on seeing everyone at the NABCs.

“We have a wonderfully close-knit family,” Greenberg says. “This is a great chance for us to get together.”

Don’t lose your headBy Barry Rigal

Sometimes your opponents hand you your head. More often, you are complicit in guillotining yourself. Today’s deal may not have had as much slapstick as a “Carry On” movie, but the blood spilt at the end certainly produced a Grand Guignol effect. Dlr: North Vul: E–W ♠ A 6 4 2 ♠ K 5 3 ♥ K Q ♥ A 8 7 4 ♦ A J 9 ♦ K 2 ♣ K Q 7 3 ♣ J 10 4 2 West North East South Pass Pass Pass 1♣ Pass 1♥ Pass 2NT Pass 3♠(1) Pass 3NT Pass 4NT Pass 6♣ All Pass

(1) ClubsEast–West had reached a playable slam, one that

looked a lot better to West on the lead of the ♦8. He ran that to his hand, ready to take a heart ruff in hand while drawing trump and claiming. At trick two, declarer played the ♣3 … and North showed out!

Remarkably, the contract is still cold, though it requires a specific lie of the cards and careful handling. South sensibly ducked the ♣10, after which the correct sequence of plays is to unblock the ♦K, cash the ♥K Q, ♠K, ♠A, then ♦J, pitching the spade loser. A low spade ruff in dummy sees everyone follow. Because South started with:♠Q 10 9 ♥10 2 ♦Q 4 3 ♣A 9 8 6 5, this is the ending: ♠ — ♥ J 9 6 ♦ 10 ♣ — ♠ 6 ♠ — ♥ — ♥ A 8 ♦ — ♦ — ♣ K Q 7 ♣ 10 4 ♠ — ♥ — ♦ — ♣ A 9 8 6

When you lead the ♥A, South might as well ruff in with the ♣8. You overruff, ruff the last spade with the ♣10, and South can fold his tend and go home.

(At the table, declarer took his ♥A prematurely and South could discard his spade to set the slam.)

Dramatic license?By Barry Rigal

This deal comes from the Senior KOs. Put yourself in declarer’s shoes as you reach 4♥, only to discover on the sight of dummy that 3NT would have been far more rewarding. Dlr: North ♠ J 9 6 5 Vul: None ♥ A 10 7 4 ♦ K 10 ♣ 8 5 3

♠ K 7 ♥ K Q 9 8 6 5 ♦ 9 8 ♣ A K 6 West North East South Pass 2♠ 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

You know the story: the defense will take their spade ruff and ♦A and a slow club loser looks inevitable. How can you rewrite the script?

Answer: Drop the ♠K under the ♠A! East will swallow the bait and switch to his doubleton club, letting you draw trumps and lead a diamond toward the king. This is the full diagram: Dlr: North ♠ J 9 6 5 Vul: None ♥ A 10 7 4 ♦ K 10 ♣ 8 5 3 ♠ 7 ♠ A Q 10 8 4 2 ♥ 3 ♥ J 2 ♦ A Q 7 6 5 3 ♦ J 4 2 ♣ Q J 10 7 2 ♣ 9 4 ♠ K 3 ♥ K Q 9 8 6 5 ♦ 9 8 ♣ A K 6

If West takes his ♦A, you will strip off the diamonds and exit with the third club. That endplays West to give you a ruff sluff and the spade loser goes away. West does better to duck his ♦A. Now declarer takes the second top club and exits in diamonds to infuriate both opponents. In this ending: ♠ J 9 6 ♥ 10 7 ♦ 10 ♣ 8 ♠ — ♠ Q 10 8 4 2 ♥ — ♥ — ♦ A Q 7 6 ♦ J 4 ♣ Q J 10 ♣ — ♠ 3 ♥ Q 9 8 6 ♦ 8 ♣ 6

Whoever wins the diamond will have one winner to cash but must concede the rest. So where does the dramatic license come in? Alas, at the table, the ♠7 and ♠3 were switched, so the falsecard could not work. Another great opportunity wasted!

Boyd made a splinter bid over Robinson’s 1♠ opening, showing shortness in clubs. Was Boyd’s shortness a singleton or a void? Robinson had a way to find out.

The pair plays 5♣ as inclusion: here, asking responder to treat a club void as an ace. Boyd’s 5♠ showed two key cards without the queen. When Robinson bid 5NT, confirming all the key cards, Boyd bid the grand.

with all of us who adored him.Bereft is Karl’s beloved partner of 42 years, wife

Kerry, and his four children who revered him: Kim (Scott), Bruce (Donna), Karl Jr. and Laura. His five grandchildren were his pride and delight: Meaghen, Ashleigh, Hana, Hayden, and Ava Marie.

Karl graduated from Mount Allison University in 1967, taking a bit longer than most to earn his degrees in mathematics and education; he was a founder of the Mount A Fossil Club, whose members preferred shenanigans to studying. Karl taught in Scotchtown before teaching math at Breton Education Centre, where he served for many years as vice principal. His 30-year teaching career culminated as principal of Mount Carmel Elementary, a period he described as the most fun and rewarding time in his professional life.

Karl was a Diamond Life Master and a tournament director for the ACBL for 48 years. His awards and achievements in bridge are numerous, but he was especially proud of receiving the Cukoff–LaTraverse–Wiser Trophy in 2016 for ethics and excellence in tournaments and bridge administration. In 2007, he won the Bruce 0–5000 Life Master Pairs and the Mini-Spingold 0–5000 Knockout Teams. He also finished third in the Epson Worldwide Bridge Contest in 1989, placed first in North America, and seventh in the world in the 2001 World Bridge Contest and won two consecutive gold medals for duplicate bridge in the Canada 55+ Games in 2014 and 2016. Always encouraging new players, Karl was the editor of the Maritime Bridge Line for 27 years and taught bridge lessons for more than 40.

Karl was an avid world traveler, having explored six continents with Kerry. He was a gifted artist, philatelist, coin collector and crossword puzzle solver. He was a film buff and lover of rock ’n’ roll, always the last to leave the dance floor. Renowned for his cheeky, irreverent Christmas cards, Karl mailed his hilarious seasonal greetings to hundreds of expectant recipients worldwide every year. Karl, like his father, will be remembered for his characteristic words of wisdom, most particularly his signature: “Illegitimi non carborundum.”

Blue Note HawaiiBlue Note Hawaii was born out

of a partnership between Outrigger Resorts and Blue Note Entertainment Group, owner of music clubs in New York, Washington DC, Milan and two locations in Japan.

Blue Note Hawaii serves as the state’s premier venue for world-renowned artists, from jazz and blues to Hawaiian favorites. Located in the former Society of Seven showroom inside Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, Blue Note Hawaii features a wide range of musical entertainment – from local talent to international sensations – for limited engagements.

Blue Note Hawaii is very generous in supporting many local causes. We are grateful that they made a substantial contribution to our NABC hospitality fundraising efforts by donating Blue Note vouchers, which were sought-after prizes in our raffles and silent auction.

Mahalo, Blue Note!

Charles and Renee PowellCharles and Renee met in Hawaii in 1947.

Within a year of meeting, they were married here in the Islands. Renee always joked that Charlie married her to teach her how to play a better game of bridge! Charlie was a Life Master, acquiring most of his red,

silver and gold points on the mainland before moving to Hawaii. Renee never obtained the title of Life Master, although she had over 900 points.

After retirement, Charlie had more time to play bridge and all his bridge partners enjoyed his calm, easy play of the game. He was a real gentleman at the table, but he did not like too much talking during the game! Renee retired several years later and the two of them played together, always polite with each other. It was a pleasure to have them at the bridge table.

Charlie passed away in 1996. Renee continued to play bridge with friends she had met over the years. In 2005, after their daughter Janet moved home, Renee encouraged new bridge players by having a small casual novice game at her home. Several of these players have gone on to excel in the game. She was fondly called Coach because during these Tuesday afternoon games, she would help these novice players with bidding and the play of the hand.

Renee passed away in 2015. Both Charlie and Renee would be so honored knowing this game was named in their memory.

Edith NeffBy Friends of Edith

Edith Neff moved to Hawaii with her two eldest children in the mid-’50s to join her husband, who worked with Dole.

During the past 60 years, Edith has been a powerful influence and force in our Hawaii bridge world. For many years, she taught lessons and ran a weekly newcomers’ game in Kailua for players with 49 masterpoints or less. She urged these players to play in other club games and tournaments.

Edith ran director classes, helping to ensure we would continue to have directors for our games. Long before ACBL encouraged better players to partner with new players, Edith developed a Pro-Am game for her Kailua 49ers. There are many of us in Hawaii who are grateful to be playing this wonderful game thanks to Edith.

Godfrey ChangBy Friends of Godfrey

Godfrey is our local player who is the most sought after by top players who come to Hawaii from the mainland and from Asia. With some 14,695 masterpoints, he is No. 385 on the list of ACBL’s top 500 players, and is the only Hawaiian player included in that elite group. This is a particularly impressive accomplishment because he almost never leaves Hawaii and never plays online.

Godfrey has been an active member of the Honolulu bridge community since the early 1970s. He has served on the local boards of Hawaiian Contract Bridge Units Association and Unit 470. His depth of knowledge of bidding and the rules governing the game mean that he is often used as a resource by the directors and players.

In the last few years, Godfrey has expanded his role to that of “Teach” for members of Unit 470 wanting to improve their game. In addition to the technical discussions about bidding and play, class time often diverts to discussions about life

and experience at the bridge table. Godfrey always emphasizes the importance of being a good partner and how that will contribute to a successful game.

One of his regular partners shared his experience: “Godfrey is, of course, an excellent expert bridge player. But, in addition, Godfrey is the perfect partner … forgiving, understanding, always pleasant and sociable and extraordinarily ethical. In short, Godfrey is the type of bridge player we all strive to be, but so few of us achieve.”

Thank you, “Teach,” for all your efforts to make us better partners and players.

–Your students

In Memory of Jim BishopBy Iku Donnelly

Jim Bishop served for many years as president and treasurer on the board of Hawaiian Contract Bridge Units Association, sponsor of the annual Hawaii Regional. We all remember him for his high integrity, unselfishness and non-judgmental character.

More than anything else, however, he had a fantastic sense of humor. One of his famous anecdotes happened at the Summer NABC in Albuquerque NM in 1982. He was playing with former

ACBL President Sid Levey. He played in a 4♠ contract with a 0–0 fit and went down eight tricks. When the hand was over, Jim said, “Sorry partner, the trumps didn’t break!” It was a world record and was written up in the New York Times by Alan Truscott.

Luke Han and Busaba WilliamsBy Friends of Luke and Busaba

Luke and Busaba met across a bridge table, and their happy meeting led them from a partnership in bridge to partners in life. In 2005, they decided to implement the vision of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and introduced Hawaii middle school students to the game of bridge. This led them to accompany 11 seventh and eighth-graders to Atlanta to participate in the first Youth North American Bridge Championship. Every student returned to Hawaii with masterpoints.

In addition, many of our players today are a result of a mentoring program developed by Luke and Busaba for adults, meeting at the Veterans Center on Saturday afternoons.

Sadly, Luke was lost to us and to Busaba in 2011. However, his legacy and their love story continue to inspire us.
