Welcometothe2016IntegratedNutritionConference!

We’reexcitedtohaveyouwithusinNairobi.Thisyear’sconferencebringstogetherbusinesses,government,academia,thedonorcommunity,andcivilsocietytoexplorehowwecanimprovetheimpactofnutrition-relevantprogramming.

Today,oneoutofthreepeopleworldwidesuffersfromsomeformofmalnutrition.Whenchildrendon’tgettherightnutrition,theirgrowthandcognitivedevelopmentareimpaired.Theyarealsolessactiveandmorepronetoillness.Thecumulativeeffectsofmalnutritioncanbedevastatingtofamiliesandcommunities,notonlyaffectingpeople’shealthandwellbeing,butalsostiflingtheir

economicgrowthandtheireffortstoescapepovertyandrespondtoshocks.Solutionstotheseissuesarecomplexandrequirecollaborative,multi-sectoral,andintegratedefforts.

Partnershipsofferenormouspotentialforinnovatingacrosssectorsbecausetheyharnessthecapabilities,strengths,andresourcesofeachpartnertowardthecommongoalofimprovednutritionofvulnerablepopulations.Theprivatesectorbringstheirownsetofstrengthstothemix:innovation,efficiency,resources,knowledge,networks,reach,andinfluence.Partnershipswiththeprivatesectorareessentialtopromotelocal,moresustainablesolutionsthatadvanceourcauseandbringmutualbenefit.

Duringthenexttwodays,wewillhavetheprivilegeofhearingfromspeakersandpanelistsrepresentinganimpressivediversityofsectors,businesses,institutions,andperspectives.Wewillshareanddiscusspromisingpartnershipandbusinessmodels;tools,technologies,andpractices;andinitiatives,policies,andinvestmentsnecessarytoassureoptimalnutrition.Onthethirdday,wewillinviteyoutoattendanexhibitionatTheSaritCentrethatwillfeatureinnovativetechnologies,products,services,andpractices.

TheFirstIntegratedNutritionConferencetookplaceinSeptember2015,organizedbyCRS’EastAfricaRegionalOfficeinpartnershipwiththeCGIARResearchProgramonAgricultureforNutritionandHealth(A4NH).Roughly160practitioners,researchers,anddonorsconvergedinNairobitodiscussNewApproachesforIntegratedStrategiestoImproveChildren’sLives,focusingonthefirstthousanddaysandtheEastAfricaRegion.

Itwastrulyatimeoflearningthroughdifferentperspectivesandprogramexperiencesfromcolleaguesacrossmanysectors.Itwasalsoatimetochallengeourselvesandaskimportantquestions.Keytake-awaysandquestionsfromthoseattendingwere:

1. Althoughwerecognizegoodnutritioniscriticalinthefirstthousanddays,childrenlivewithinafamilycontext;thus,itiskeytoconsiderthefamilyasawhole,notforgettingtheneedsofadolescentgirls,theelderly,andcaretakers.

2. ThequestionheardoftenduringQ&A,groupwork,andininformaldiscussionwas,“Whereistheprivatesector?”Werecognizedanessentialgroupofstakeholderswasmissingfromtheconversation.

Thisishowthe2016IntegratedNutritionConferencecameabout,withitstheme,RespondingwiththePrivateSectorforGreaterNutritionImpact.Engagingtheprivatesectorisessentialbecauseofthecomplexityandcrosscuttingnatureoftheissuesathand,theimportanceofcollaborationandpartnershiptoaddressthese,andthepotentialforgreaterreach,impact,andsustainabilityofoptimalnutritionoutcomes.Themainobjectivesofthisconferencearetoidentifypartnershipstrategiestoaccomplishidentifiednutritionoutcomes,andtoleverageproducts,services,technologies,andpracticestosupporttheseoutcomes.Eachobjectivehasthreeconferencetracks,asoutlinednext.
