The First Annual Richardson Rotary "Restaurant Week” benefitting the Wheelchair foundation was held Saturday October 3rd at Wildflour Texas Cafe in Richardson. Gayle Wood and Sylvia Workman, owners of the cafe, graciously opened their doors to us and provided a wonderful dinner at a reduced cost, so that we could raise funds toward our goal. The atmosphere was perfect for chatting and getting to know each other in a less formal venue. We'd like to thank Gayle and Sylvia for helping us with this event. George and Marilyn Human were perfect hosts for this event. More than $500 were raised to benefit Wheelchair. Thanks to everyone who attended and also to those who could not attend and donated anyway! Please keep your calendar open for a couple of dates in the future. On November 18th Celina Cardenas is planning our final Meet and Greet of the year. We will be doing this in conjunction with Richardson East. This will be a great opportunity to visit with fellow Richardson Rotarians. Location TBA. Our holiday party will take place on 1-15-10. The even will be called The Winter Wonderland. We hear there will be snow all around for this event, so be sure to find your parkas!! Stay tuned for more info!

CLUB SERVICE – Sandy Garza

NETWORK FOOD DRIVE - Beginning Monday, October 26th, Richardson Rotary Club will launch its holiday season food drive for the NETWORK of Community Ministries. Throughout the holiday season, NETWORK routinely experiences a surge of activity in its food pantry program and tends to run low on certain items. Currently, the high priority items include: Peanut butter, jelly, macaroni & cheese, spaghetti, tomato sauce, tomato paste, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, and laundry detergent. Other items of continuous need include canned fruits and vegetables, particularly green beans and corn.

We are really a blessed group of people and live in a blessed community. In light of the current economic environment, NETWORK needs our help more than ever so I encourage EVERYONE to participate. Donations will be collected at the door on Monday, October 26th, November 2nd, and November 16th. If you are unable (or forget) to make a food donation, I encourage you to let Chip Izard know that you would like for him to bill your account for a specified cash donation.

If you have any comments or suggestions on how to improve this effort or clarify any previous communication, please contact the drive coordinator, Hank Mulvihill at 972-234-2001 or the Community Service Director, Bart Aldridge at 972-880-2292. SANTA’S VILLAGE - The holiday season is fast approaching. Once again, the Richardson Rotary Club will be proudly sponsoring the Richardson Post Office exhibit at Santa’s Village and recruiting reindeer (Interact students) from Richardson High School. In the upcoming weeks, a sign-up sheet will begin circulating so that each and everyone of you has the opportunity to donate three short hours of time to such a great event. The significant dates for the 2009 season are as follows: Saturday - Sunday, Dec 5-6 (6pm– 9pm) - Opening weekend and tree lighting ceremony on Saturday Thursday – Sunday, Dec 10-13 (6pm – 9pm) Friday, Dec 11 (9am – 12 pm) Pre-School Day Thursday – Sunday, Dec 17-20 (6pm – 9pm) If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact the Community Service Director, Bart Aldridge at 972-880-2292. DOBIE HOLIDAY TOY PROGRAM - Today we are launching our annual pledge drive to support the Dobie Primary holiday toy program. Participation involves either making a cash donation or completing a pledge slip on your table. In either case, you can deposit your donation in the brightly colored donation box at the front table. For those of you new to our club, this program involves raising money to put toys in the hands and smiles on the faces of the beautiful children at Dobie Primary that might otherwise receive little or nothing in the way of a holiday gift. Our club has supported Kay Reynolds (Principal) and her staff for many years in their efforts to make this happen. The deadline for making this gift is Monday, December 7th.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – Bart Aldridge

First I want to thank all of you for your participation and attendance at our last two Club meetings. The October 19 meeting was our “Honored Guest Day” and featured our Rotary 5810 District Governor Dave McSpadden and his wife Marilyn. We had several guests and possible new members in attendance and Dave talked about what Rotary means to him and the difference Rotary is making in the world. The Richardson HS Rotaract Club presented a $1,000 to the District for the eradication of Polio. Our Club also presented a $210 check to the District to help with eradication of Polio. These two checks will fund over 2,000 doses of serum at approximately $.60 each under Rotary International’s Polio Plus program. We are making a difference the world. The Club meeting on October 26 at Dobie Primary was led by our own Kay Reynolds, Dobie’s principal for the last 21 years- WOW! Each Rotarian was met at the door by a Dobie Ambassador and escorted to the cafeteria for the lunch and meeting. During the meeting three of the kindergarten classes entertained us with songs and the several of the Family Literacy Center leaders were introduced. Joanna, one of the adults attending the Center, practiced giving her speech that she will be making at the Barbara Bush Foundation ceremony being held later this year. It is truly amazing to hear about the things being done to teach the students and families at Dobie and to help acclimate them into our country. There are many, many things happening in the next few months in our community and our Club. I want to highlight a few of these and encourage each of you to participate. Through Monday, November 16, we are collecting canned food and other donations for the families at Network. This Thursday, November 5, the Rotary Club of Dallas will hold its 5th annual Salute to America’s Veterans celebration luncheon. The event will be at The Frontier’s of Flight Museum at Love Field. Tickets are still available. This Saturday, November 7, there will be a District 5810 seminar for the Rotary Foundation. All Rotary members are invited to attend. If you plan to attend, please contact Barry Krause. We will not meet on Monday, November 9. The Richardson Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Clubs of Richardson will host the Business & Industry luncheon on Thursday, November 12 at the Hyatt Hotel. The Club will pay the additional $15 for the luncheon for all our Active Members who attend. Please Contact Barry Krause or Chip Izard if you plan to attend so we can provide an accurate head count to the hotel. Our Club’s next Meet ‘n Greet is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18. Do not miss this opportunity for fellowship with your fellow Rotarians and guests. The Richardson Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, December 5, and our Club will again sponsor the Post Office at Santa’s Village beginning on that same Saturday. Volunteers are needed to help with Parade staging, Parade Marshalls and staffing at the Post Office. Also, Jim Shepherd will be taking donations for the Wheelchair project and Bart Aldridge will be taking donations for the Toys for Dobie project between now and the New Year.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – Barry Krause

Mark your calendar for November 14th and plan to attend the Methodist Richardson Medical Center Foundation’s 2009 Yellow and Black Tie Gala at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center in Plano!
