Alumni News… Adrian Granados ‘07 Live @ UIC Pavilion on 3/22!

Written by: Bill Hillman, Class of 1999

St. Joseph High School graduate and top-notch professional boxer, Adrian “El Tigre” Granados (pictured, left) is set to fight a co-main event on ESPN's Friday Night Fights TV show March 22nd at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

Granados was a very solid student at St. Joe’s and nearly made the Mexican Olympic Boxing Team before turning professional as a boxer. Granados has battled at the international level and fought in 2011’s “Fight of the Year” for the Solo Boxeo television show. Since then, Granados has defeated two highly touted prospects and most recently knocked out the undefeated Antonio “Aztec God of War” Canas in Granados’ hometown of Cicero, Illinois.

On March 22nd live at the UIC Pavilion and airing on the globe’s most important sports channel, ESPN, Granados will face the biggest challenge of his career when he takes on former World Champion Kermit Cintrón (33-5-1). Granados will be an underdog in the match but with the help of his hometown crowd and support from his alma mater, St. Joseph, he WILL emerge victorious and his path to a World Title will continue.

Come out and support Adrian as he sets out to make boxing history! Tickets are priced at $151, $101, $51 and $31 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com or by calling Nick Hansen ‘99 at 708-214-6425. Let’s go, Charger Nation!

Paul Weaver, Class of 1986

Written by: Tony Quattrochi, Faculty Member

He has a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Bio-Chemistry and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He is Paul Weaver, St. Joseph High School, Class of 1986. This former Hillside resident was just as busy in high school, before earning a bachelor degree from Loyola University, a doctorate from the Ohio State University, and being a post-doc fellow in Immunology at the University of Minnesota.

“I played soccer, wrestled, and was a member of the Honors Program and National Honor Society,” Paul recalled in a phone interview from the Kagan Binder law office in Stillwater, Minnesota, outside of the Twin Cities. “At St. Joe’s I studied, worked, and

played hard. St. Joe’s has a strong math curriculum that provided a solid foundation for my studies in the sciences.”

Paul now represents inventors and clients in the medical device, chemical, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries. “I prepare, file, and procure patent applications with the USPTO based on client inventions. I also perform patentability and due diligence analysis of patent portfolios. I keep pretty busy. The Twin Cities has a robust medical device industry, but our clients are from all over the US, as well as Europe and Asia. I’ve worked on some pretty interesting technologies including drug delivery devices, transgenic crops and microorganisms, molecular diagnostics, and large molecule therapeutics.”

Paul is married (his wife is an attorney doing similar work) with three children.

We are very proud of this Charger! Congratulations, Paul!

Alumna News…

Where are they now? Mary Frances Linzemann Winton '67

Mary Frances’ profile on the St. Joseph and IHM Alumni Network…

I graduated from IHM in 1967 and later went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Business with a Quantitative Methods specialty. I continued my education, earning an MBA with an emphasis in International Business and Finance. I am also a Certified Professional Contracts Manager (CPCM). In 2001, I retired from SPARTA, Inc., a company with 1400 employees which my husband founded, where I managed a number of departments at our corporate headquarters. Our company specialized in research and engineering for the federal government, primarily classified intelligence/counterintelligence and ballistic missile defense programs. We sold the company in 2008. Because my

husband set up the company to be employee-owned, with employees earning stock based on their contribution to the growth and reputation of our firm, 152 of our employee-stockholders received proceeds for their shares in excess of $1 million each! It's such a rewarding feeling to know that we made a real contribution to the defense of our nation and at the same time made a significant impact on the lives of so many of our employees. I have one daughter Angel, a son-in-law Michael Burton, and two grandsons, Blake and Grant. They live around the corner from us here in San Juan Capistrano, CA. The boys are both in gifted classes at their schools as well as being star athletes in baseball, football, basketball, swimming and golf. We take the whole family traveling with us whenever we can, recently to Africa, the Galapagos, Central America and Europe. We live on a golf course and play regularly. Southern California is ideal for enjoying the game year round. We also spend time on our yacht. Life is good.

Great to hear from you Mary Frances! All the best to you and your family!

Charger News…

The Little Theatre is not so little…

The SJHS Theater is in the midst of a serious make-over! New lights and sound equipment have been donated and will be installed in a couple weeks. A fresh paint job and new drapes are underway. Light and sound booth windows are being installed and the booth is being outfitted with customized furniture and new computer equipment. In addition, two external theater groups use the space along with St. Joseph’s Theater Department, which is scheduled to perform in the spring, host a Theater Camp in the summer and then prepare for a fall performance.

Recent theater improvements include:

$80-100K of theater equipment donated by Production Plus (courtesy of Board Member, Bruce Sirus ‘69) and Upstaging, Inc. (lighting).

A ceiling suspended projector has been donated to the school from Kurtis Studios, Chicago (courtesy of Diane Little)

The room has been wired with 5.1 dolby surround sound, with subwoofers scheduled to be installed soon.

Bottom Row: Angel Burton (daughter) and Mary Frances Winton (nee Linzemann). Top Row: Wayne Winton (husband), Blake Burton (grandson), Grant Burton (grandson) and Michael Burton (son-in-law)

Page 6: Monday, March 11, 2013 Upcoming EVENTS - St. Joseph - IHM Alumni

Windows have been created in the booth, transforming that space from a movie reel room to a state-of-the art light and sound booth. Customized windows and furniture are being built and provided to us by Production Plus.

The room has been measured for drapes on the walls and across the back of the theater to provide the space with professional quality acoustics for any type of performance.

The theater will experience a face-lift when a volunteer team from ABN AMRO (courtesy of Tom Chlada ‘80) is here at the end of March to paint the front of theater and stage.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Bruce Sirus ‘69, owner of Production Plus, and his team for all their continued work,

current parent, Diane Little, from Kurtis Studio for their generous donation, Tom Chlada ‘80 and friends for taking a weekend to paint the theatre, and our friends, Amy, Dan, and crew, with the Westchester Civic Theatre for being flexible and helping with improvements as work is being done in the theatre while preparing for their spring production, Leaving Iowa.
