This victory vaults the Todd Pletcher trainee, who is now three-for- three at the 1 1/8- mile distance, over the $1 million earning mark in career earnings. Unhurried early, Stopchargingmaria settled into third, as Miss Besilu (Medaglia d'Oro) and the well-backed Take the Odds (Street Sense) alternated on an even pace. The Repole runner took aim on those two and got the jump on chief market rival Unbridled Forever (Unbridled's Song) rounding the final turn. She overtook Miss Besilu with relative ease a furlong and a half out and came away to score by five lengths. Unbridled Forever picked up a third consecutive Grade I placing in second, while Miss Besilu, a half-sister to Horse of the Year Saint Liam, garnered one of her own by staying on for third. AIt kind of unfolded the way we wanted it to on the first turn,@ winning trainer Todd Pletcher explained. AWe were able to get the position we wanted. She had a good trip from there, and it worked out well. I told [owner] Mike [Repole] that this filly has never trained better than she has here in the last month. She seems to really like Saratoga. She has been training much more powerfully than she did this winter, so we expected a big effort from her." cont. p3 TOM=S TRIBUTE ROLLS IN THE EDDIE READ Tom=s Tribute (Lion Heart) tallied his first graded victory in style, taking Del Mar=s GI Eddie Read S. Sunday for the Braly Family Trust and trainer James Cassidy. Tom=s Tribute, who was named in honor of the late Tom Braly, was trying the 1 1/8-mile distance for the first time. Through the opening stages, the chestnut stalked the pace in second behind free- wheeling leader Horizontalyspeakin (Medallist). He shifted into the gear on the turn to confront that rival at the top of the lane and gained a narrow advantage. Tom=s Tribute found another gear late and kicked clear for the victory. cont. p4 HYMN ON SONG IN FRANCE Western Hymn (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), just under 10 lengths away when sixth to Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in last month=s G1 Epsom Derby, bounced back from that only career defeat with a dominant score in yesterday=s G2 Prix Eugene Adam at Maisons-Laffitte. Settled last of the six runners for much of the 10- furlong test, the 8-5 second favorite swooped for control passing the eighth pole and drew off under urging to prevail by three lengths from Army Bulletin (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). AHe is still a baby, but has a lot of class and did that easily,@ said William Buick. AHe has a good turn of foot, but looks around when he hits the front. He has a lot of speed and I think 10 furlongs suits him better [than 12 furlongs],@ the jockey added. Western Hymn was held back as last season breezed by, but hit the ground running with a debut win over the Kempton Polytrack Dec. 2 in his sole juvenile outing. Opening this term with an impressive conditions score at Newbury Apr. 11, he registered a first pattern- race success in Sandown=s Apr. 25 G3 Classic Trial, but lost his unbeaten tag when sixth in the G1 Epsom Derby last time June 7. Western Hymn was positioned last of the six runners from the outset and remained there for the most part. Making smooth headway in the straight, he loomed large inside the final quarter mile, before pouncing at the eighth pole, edging clear with William Buick=s urgings to get back on track in style. cont. p6 Stopchargingmaria NYRA Photo

AThe huge thing was to win a Grade I,@ Pletchercontinued. AA filly of her resume, to get that Grade Iwas huge. I thought she ran well enough today tocertainly earn a spot in the [GI] Alabama [S. Aug. 16].@ AI had a beautiful dream trip,@ said winning pilotJavier Castellano. AMy concerns were the small fieldand the one hole, which is sometimes difficult to getout. I'm glad it worked out perfect. I saved the groundon the first turn. After that I secured my spot. I like theway she did it today. Turning for home, I was thinkingthe race was over. At the top of the stretch, she tookoff. Now, the way she has matured, she wasphenomenal today." Repole commented, AAt first, we didn't think her3-year-old season was coming out the way we thoughtit would be. She had two average starts, and then sheran great in the Black-Eyed Susan. We brought her uphere after Florida and since she's been here, she's beentraining like a different horse.@ Stopcharginamaria opened her account by 5 1/2lengths at the Spa last year before finishing second andthird in the GI Spinaway S. and GI Frizette S.,respectively. She was successful at the Big A with a 10 3/4-length victory in the GIII Tempted S. and GII Demoiselle S. in November before taking a shortwinter hiatus. The dark bay was a bit rusty when fifthin Gulfstream=s Davona Dale S. Feb.22 and neverseriously factored when fourth in the GIII Fantasy S. atOaklawn Apr. 5. However, she returned to the winner=scircle with a battling victory in Pimlico=s GII Black-EyedSusan S. May 16. Stopchargingmaria was originallyslated to run in Belmont=s GI Mother Goose S. June 28,but her connections opted to skip that affair after theentry of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable (Tapit).
