Builder booked for trying to grab Dilip Kumar's bungalow released, Banu requests meeting with PM NEW DELHI, Dec 16: The incidents of kidnapping for ransom have shown an upward trend in the national capital, with Delhi Police saying there main challenge is to ensure the victim's safety. Nineteen incidents of kidnap- ping have been reported till November this year in the city as compared to 14 during the same period last year, including a sensa- tional case where a minor boy was brazenly abducted from a school bus on the eve of Republic Day from Shahdara, according to data released by Delhi Police. Police said in kidnapping cases, their top priority is to ensure the safety of the victims involved. "We have to be very careful even with minute things. Our main challenge is to ensure that the victim is rescued safely without any injuries. We have to closely monitor the actions of the kidnappers," a senior police officer said. According to police, in such cases it is difficult to take the victims' family into confidence. "It's often difficult to convince the parents of the victims and take them into confidence. Because in the process, sometimes they tend to lose faith," G Ram Gopal Naik, Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) said. In kidnapping cases, media plays an essential role by not leaking sensitive details pertain- ing to investigations as it might ultimately pose a threat to the victim's life, police said. "Even your single mistake can pose a threat to the victim's life. There are times when even investigating officers tend to lose hope, but we we keep patience and work with the hope that the victim is still alive. There have been instances, where the victim is killed within 24 hours of kidnapping and the accused make ransom calls claiming the victim to be alive," an investigative officer said. In most of the cases the accused are known to the victim. In a case where the five-year-old boy was abducted, the kidnap- per was a customer of the vic- tim's father. The accused was aware about the financial status of the victim's father. In October this year, a first- year Delhi University student, along with her minor brother, allegedly kidnapped a three- year-old son of their landlord and demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh.(PTI) NEW DELHI, Dec 16: Soon, passengers onboard trains or students in faraway locations can take a tour of the National Rail Museum or see the Kalka-Shimla rail route without moving from their seats. Taking forward its digital initiative to preserve and pro- mote its heritage, Railways has tied up with Google's education initiative to create and deliver virtual educational expeditions using 3-D imaging and virtual tours of its prominent heritage places. As a part of this project, Railways is considering provid- ing virtual reality glasses to pas- sengers on rent so that they can have a glimpse of the sites with- out actually being there physi- cally. It is also planning to col- laborate with schools and NGOs to take the glasses to class- rooms. "We want to take this for- ward and offer an opportunity for students across the country, wherever they are, to experience railway heritage. They might not be able to come there physi- cally, but they will experience it as if they were. We want to join hands with educational institu- tions, NGOs for this purpose. "The railway minister has asked us to provide such glasses to the onboard staff so that they can be used by passengers," Subrata Nath, Executive Director (Heritage) said. The cost of these glasses - Google's version is called Google cardboard - vary, with the cheapest coming for less than Rs 200. All one has to do is use the Google Expedition app or open the Google arts and cul- ture website and search for the railway heritage sites one wish- es to visit. In the first phase, virtual expeditions are being created for Kalka Shimla Railway (KSR) and CSMT, Mumbai -- both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nath said that the project is exciting especially because it can be used as a teaching tool for students who may be unable to afford trips to the sites them- selves. "Through this innovative project, children and students will be introduced to a new way of learning using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), thus creating classrooms with no boundaries. "With VR and AR, teachers will no longer be limited by the space of the classroom and this project will allow teacher, say in Kerala or Tamil Nadu to guide students through scenic panora- ma of Kangra Valley Railway, located thousands of miles away in Himachal Pradesh or Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai, without travelling even out of their city or town," said Nath.
