Using as many adjectives as possible, write a brief paragraph describing who you are. Think of all the positive attributes that make you unique.

MINI – LESSON: ACADEMIC VOCABULARY

Academic vocabulary is the language you encounter in textbooks, on standardized test, and other assessments.

There are 2 basic types of academic vocabulary: general and domain-specific. General academic vocabulary includes words that are not specific to any single

course of study. For example, the word determine is an academic word that can be seen across the

curriculum.

List an example for a time in which you might see the word determine in a math class, social studies class, or science class.

Domain-specific academic vocabulary includes words that are usually encountered in the study of a specific discipline.

For example, the base is used in math to mean a number that is raised to a power by an exponent.

The word base has many definitions, but the one used for math is specific to math only.

MINI – LESSON: ACADEMIC VOCABULARY

Let’s look at a few general academic words and domain-specific words.

Open your literature book and turn to page I Introductory Unit.

The words presented on pages I through Iiv are general academic vocabulary words.

In your group, compile a list of words from the general academic vocabulary section that you know.

Now, review the words again and compile a second list of words that you did not know before seeing them today.

On pages lv through lvii you will find domain-specific academic words.

In your group, review the words from social studies, mathematics, and science. Compile a list of words from each section that you knew based on the domain-specific definition.

Now, review the words again and compile a list of words that you did not know based on their domain-specific definitions.

Steps to Follow Model

1. Learn to identify the word and its basic meaning. The word examine means to “to look at closely.”

2. Take note of the word’s spelling. Examine begins and ends with an e.

3. Practice pronouncing the word so that you can use it in conversations.

The e on the end of examine is silent. Its second syllable gets the most stress.

4. Visualize the word and illustrate its key meaning. When I think of the word examine, I visualize a doctor checking a patient’s health.

5. Learn the various forms of the word and its related words. Examination and exam are forms of the word examine.

6. Compare the word with similar words. Examine, peruse, and study are synonyms.

7. Contrast the word with similar words. Examine suggests a more detailed study than read or look at.

8. Use the word in various contexts. “I’d like to examine the footprints more closely.”“I will examine the use of imagery in this poem.”

Vocabulary four square is a vocabulary strategy that helps you mentally internalize word meaning through the creation of pictures.

To construct a vocabulary four square, you must spell the word, define the word in your own words, draw a mental picture of how you imagine the word, and use the word in a sentence.
