The Key Stage 2 tests are designed to test children’s knowledge and understanding of the Key Stage 2 programmes of study.

• They provide a snapshot of a child’s attainment at the end of a Key Stage.

• Each child is awarded an ARE scaled score in Reading, Mathematics and SPaG

Page 5: Monday 5 th October 2015 Welcome!. All children in the final year of Key Stage 2 are externally assessed in: English – Reading and SPaG Mathematics.

Where previously the tests and teacher assessment were graded in levels, the 2016 tests will be reported as a scaled score with a score of 100 representing the expected level for each age group.

100 – ARE 80 minimum 130 maximum New performance descriptors Teacher assessment alongside tests. Attainment and progress still remain very

important measures

Types of support available: Readers – only available in mathematics. As a general guide if

the reading age of the child is around 9 years or less. Scribes/Word processing – only available to children who would

have this type of support during normal lessons. NB Handwriting has much more significance in attainment score than pre New Curriculum

Extra time – some children will be entitled to 25% extra time based on strict criteria laid down by QCA. This needs to be approved by Hertfordshire LA.

The tests will take place in the Hall and in the classroom ( individual choice) or a smaller room for children who will find it difficult to concentrate in the main room.

And how would you like it,Supposing you were a frogAn emerald scrap with a pale, trembling throat. In a cool and shadowed bogIf a tremendous monsterTall, tall so that his head seemed lost in mistLeaned over and clutched you up in his great fist, Just for the joyOf watching you jump, scaramble, tumble, fall,

It’s green and it’s small It tells us what the frog looks like It means the frog is little and worth nothing Emerald shows the frog is green and scrap

tells us that it is unimportant

As well as receiving a test Scaled Score in each of the core subjects, each child will also receive teacher assessment information. Which is reportable in July 2016 and sits alongside the test results.

• Unlike the tests the teacher assessment information:

- covers all aspects of the subject; - considers the child’s attainment over the

course of the year.

Page 21: Monday 5 th October 2015 Welcome!. All children in the final year of Key Stage 2 are externally assessed in: English – Reading and SPaG Mathematics.

How will the results be reported? Year 6 SATs tests are sent away for marking. This is done electronically. In early July, the school will receive the results back. We can view the marked papers on line should we wish to do so.These are first checked by staff for errors. Following this, you will receive a report showing the teacher assessment and the SATs results. There will be no comparison to National results this year as it will be the first year with the new Score.

• The tests are only a snapshot. • Remember children need time to relax and enjoy

themselves. • As long as they have tried their best, no-one needs

to worry about their test results or be disappointed by them.

• Please help us to enable and encourage your child to do their personal best.

• The children will be well-prepared and supported and we will ensure that the entire process is calm and positive.

We believe in celebrating your children, their personalities and their effort and endeavour – as well as their ability.
