basic rights and freedoms, to ensure American safety against terrorists.

Debate: ACLU vs. the Government• The Government and the ACLU are debating the

provisions of the Patriot Act. • Half of you will be part of the Government.

• You are defending these provisions and stating they are necessary to keep the US safe.

• Half of you will be part of the ACLU.• You will be stating that these are uneccesary provisions that are

invading on constitutional rights for no good.

Debate • In order to make sure our debate goes smoothly we are going to do the following things:• 1 when you are one of the 3 people in the center, you

need to use the sentence starters.• Each group in the center will be there for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes we will rotate. • Each person will start off at a 55. Every time you talk

and engage in the discussion/use information from the handouts in your points you will get 15 points. That means to get a 100 you will need to talk 3 times.

• Moderator will be responsible for calling on one person at a time, keeping order, and asking leading questions.

• I will act as assistant moderator.
