THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO INVESTIGATE TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ANY SUSPICIOUS PERSON AND THEIR ACTIVITIES.

THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PROTECT THIS COUNTRY AND THE PEOPLE IN IT

The Patriot Act• Enacted in 2001 as a response to September 11th attacks.• Enabled the government to limit certain civil liberties,

basic rights and freedoms, to ensure American safety against terrorists.

ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)

• “The ACLU is our nation’s guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.” – ACLU website.

Debate: ACLU vs. the Government• The Government and the ACLU are debating the

provisions of the Patriot Act. • Half of you will be part of the Government.

• You are defending these provisions and stating they are necessary to keep the US safe.

• Half of you will be part of the ACLU.• You will be stating that these are uneccesary provisions that are

invading on constitutional rights for no good.

Debate • In order to make sure our debate goes smoothly we are going to do the following things:• 1 when you are one of the 3 people in the center, you

need to use the sentence starters.• Each group in the center will be there for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes we will rotate. • Each person will start off at a 55. Every time you talk

and engage in the discussion/use information from the handouts in your points you will get 15 points. That means to get a 100 you will need to talk 3 times.

• Moderator will be responsible for calling on one person at a time, keeping order, and asking leading questions.

• I will act as assistant moderator.
