You can study a Chemistry major in the following courses:
Bachelor of Science
Bachelor of Science Advanced Research (Honours)
Bachelor of Science Advanced Global Challenges (Honours)
A major in Chemistry can also be taken as part of a doubledegree. For further details and information on these optionsplease see our Science Undergraduate Course Guide orvisit monash.edu/science/future/courses/
Honours studiesFollowing their first degree, students can apply to dohonours. The honoursprogram involves thecompletion of a researchproject and courseworkoptions that cover a broadrange of topics selected bythe student in conjunctionwith the coordinator.
Postgraduate studies After honours, students can apply to undertake MSc and PhDstudies. These degrees involve coursework options and aresearch project or thesis.
Courses
Dr Chris ThompsonLecturer in Chemistry at Monash
Chris Thompson is an academic with a special focus oneducation. Not every university employs specialist educatorsand in an unusual move, there is a handful of these rarespecialists in the Monash Faculty of Science. Chriss researchimplements innovative ways to teach chemistry.
I want to change the way we educate chemistry students to help them become professional scientists who are trained tothink independently; to ask clever questions and devise solutions.
Students entering the chemistry course in 2015 will entera new world. A 9500m2 multi-level building known asGreen Chemical Futures is nearly finished on the Claytoncampus. The top two floors will be an incubator for morethan 100 chemists and engineers doing both basic scienceand industry-driven research. The lower levels will housepurpose-built labs and learning spaces.
The new labs will accommodate 1200 first year students. Theyll be in groups of 16 at long benches, each with a screen, gleaming glassware and new instruments. Everything willbe fresh and new. Were going to have fun. Imagine anexperiment where we might give a team of students avial containing an unknown white powder. Theyll havetwo weeks to come up with a strategy on how they planto identify the powder. Then, to confirm their hypothesis, theyll be asked to do some chemistry to actually make it.
Theres real energy andexcitement in MonashChemistry. Students are herebecause they want to learn,to better themselves. One ofthe things I love about being inthe field of Chemistry researchis I can go into a lab and knowthat I am the first human beingon Earth to try an experiment.Theres the possibility Illuncover something amazingand that Im closer toa major discovery.

Our journey to become leaders in the global shifttowards green and sustainable chemistry startswith us, which is why were building a GreenChemical Futures hub right here on campus.
Green Chemical Futures unifies teaching, research, and industry in one location.
The building will be a fresh and engaging academicenvironment, where students can collaborate withtheir peers, academics, and industry professionals. We are creating a vibrant home where studentscan learn, network and socialise.
GCF is the heart of forward-thinkingin chemical science, with each levelinviting students and researchersto explore possibilities and stretchtheir mind, marrying learning withinnovation in the same building.
The lower levels of the buildingwill house innovative teaching andcollaborative learning spaces, moving away from traditional lecturehalls in favour of inviting spacesthat encourage active learning andcreative problem-solving in smallergroups. State-of-the-art researchlaboratories and transitional facilitieswill be located on the upper levels.
Monash Science students andacademics will have access to:
Collaborative learning spaces
Sophisticated laboratoriesand research facilities
The latest equipmentand resources
A lectorial-style learning space
Wireless technology
Industry engagement spaces
Visual interconnectionand interaction.

Chemistry If you are interested in a career in chemistry,Monash Science is the place to be.Chemistry is the central science that underpins every field of science.Science needs innovative, passionate chemistry graduates whoare equipped to tackle the many challenges the world faces in thetwenty first century.
In the modern world, developments in areas including medicine, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, earthsciences and new materials are increasingly based on molecularproperties and interactions, meaning chemistry is assured ofcontinuing its central role.
Solutions to current world problems in the environment, energyresources, waste management and pollution control, as well asprogress in medical treatments, new materials, biotechnology, nanotechnology and industrial processes rely heavily onchemical knowledge and its application.
Why study chemistry at Monash? The Monash University School of Chemistry provides a cutting-edgechemistry education, with established industry relationshipsand teaching staff who lead the field in research and innovation.Students studying chemistry at Monash have the opportunityto explore a diverse range of areas and applications.
Monashs School of Chemistry is taking steps to become the drivingforce in the global shift toward green and sustainable Chemistry.
The Green Chemical Futures Initiative encompasses innovativeteaching, research, and industry engagement to reduce theenvironmental footprint of the chemical industry.

Diverse, exciting careeropportunitiesStudying chemistry at Monash University opensthe door to an incredibly diverse range of careeroptions and opportunities.
A degree in chemistry equips graduates with arange of relevant, transferrable skills, includinglogical thinking, critical analysis, numeracy, datahandling and communication.
A solid chemistry education is essential to manyscience careers. Approximately 35 per cent ofprofessional chemists are employed in governmentlaboratories, forensic and analytical laboratories, universities and research organisations.
Chemistry graduates are also perfectly equippedto pursue a career outside of science, with manygraduates found working in careers such as law,
banking, teaching, journalism, communications andpolitics. With the field of biotechnology expandingrapidly, there are also a huge number of new, exciting roles emerging for chemistry graduates.
Chemistry researchand innovationChemistry at Monash has a broad research basethat emphasises the chemistry of sustainabilityas well as recognised strengths in materials, synthetic, analytical and green chemistry. Our focus is on student learning which isenhanced by our active research culture, industryengagement and community involvement.
We collaborate on a number of projects withother Monash departments and schools, including biochemistry, biological sciences, microbiology and earth sciences.
We also work closely with external parties suchas CSIRO (radio-physics, minerals, chemicalsand polymers, wood technology, etc), hospitals, industries (coal, energy, dairy, chemical, biotechnology) and many other chemistry andscience departments worldwide.
