The Readings and their Message

Exodus 17:3-7 Water and food, the two essential elements for life, should be provided by the mother, according to Middle Eastern culture. Here it is God

himself who, in his maternal role, provides for food. It is the authority of Moses that is under attack. People complain against him for having taken them out of Egypt and led them into the desert; but, in fact, they are really rebelling against God. Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 The legal language goes to a secondary place and one much more ethical begins. Now, love is positioned before justice. The teaching of Paul on justification, although it is complex and difficult to understand, is clear here. He tells the Romans that they have not been justified by their own actions or merits; the word diaio is relational; it is based on the justice of God that gives life, security, and wellbeing. Human beings are just, when they respect the life and wellbeing granted by God. John 4:5-42 According to the data from the Old Testament, the Samaritan people had been formed from five tribes that repopulated Samaria after having been conquered by Assyria. Each tribe brought along its own gods, although they later accepted the worship of Yahweh. The unexplainable knowledge of Jesus about the situation of the woman leads her to call him prophet and to start a conversation about the appropriate place of worship. The law prescribed a concrete place, but it did not name it. The Jews believed it had to be Jerusalem. The Samaritans thought it was Gerizim, a mountain from which you could see both the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. The story speaks at length about the differences between Jews and Samaritans. The religion of the Samaritans is described as something inferior; and yet, Jesus stops to speak with a Samaritan woman.

Risks to children’s safety come in many shapes and sizes. As parents and caring adults, inappropriate adult conduct is not the only risk to watch for; we must also create safe environments to protect children from other risks. One possible threat comes from the small soft plastic pods that hold laundry detergent. The pods are brightly colored, and often attract young children who may mistake them for candy or other foods and according to studies, children who ingest these pods or been exposed to them could become ill and need to be hospitalized. This year’s Chrism Mass will be held on Monday, April 10th at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. At this Mass the People, Priests, Deacons, and Religious gather with Archbishop Gomez to celebrate as the Catholic people of Los Angeles.

During the Mass, the Holy Oils are blessed and distributed to all the parishes. Another highlight of this Mass is that the priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles renew their vows of obedience and their commitment to serve God’s people. Since parking in the Cathedral garage is limited, everyone is encouraged to carpool. Also, it is highly recommended that you arrive at the Cathedral by 5:30 p.m. so that way you can park in the Cathedral garage. All of our parishioners are invited to attend. Las lecturas y su mensaje

Éxodo 17:3-7 El agua y el alimento, dos elementos esenciales para la vida, deberían ser provistos por la madre, según la cultura del Cercano Oriente. Aquí es Dios mismo quien, en su aspecto maternal, provee el alimento. Es

la autoridad de Moisés la que está bajo el ataque. La gente murmura contra él por haberlos sacado de Egipto y llevado al desierto; pero, en realidad, están rebelándose contra Dios al hacer eso.

Romanos 5:1-2, 5-8 El lenguaje jurídico pasa a un segundo plano y empieza uno más ético. El amor se antepone ahora a la justicia. La enseñanza de Pablo sobre la justificación, aunque compleja y difícil de entender, está clara aquí. Les dice a los romanos que no se han justificado por sus propias acciones o méritos. La palabra diaio es relacional; se basa en la justicia de Dios que da vida, seguridad y bienestar. Los seres humanos son justos cuando respetan la vida y el bienestar concedidos por Dios.

Juan 4:5-42 Según datos del Antiguo Testamento, el pueblo samaritano se había formado de cinco tribus que repoblaron Samaria después de ser conquistada por Asiria. Cada tribu trajo sus propios dioses, aunque después aceptaron el culto a Yahvé. El conocimiento inexplicable de la situación de la mujer que demuestra Jesús hace que ella lo llame profeta y comience una conversación sobre el lugar de culto apropiado. La ley prescribía un lugar concreto, pero no lo nombraba. Los judíos creían que Jerusalén era el lugar adecuado. Los samaritanos pensaban que era Gerizim, una montaña desde donde se podía ver el Río Jordán y el Mar Mediterráneo. El relato habla extensamente sobre las diferencias entre judíos y samaritanos. Se describe la religión samaritana como algo inferior; y, sin embargo, Jesús se detiene a hablar con una mujer samaritana.
