Triangle versus rectangle(dispersion)

• If you have an odd-shaped piece of glass (not a parallelogram, but like a prism or a water drop) the angle of final refracted ray that comes out is NOT equal to the angle of the original incident ray that went in.

• ie: those rays are not parallel.• Thus, the light spreads out or

“disperses” and we get a rainbow.

Page 10: Mon Feb 24th 1.Sound test ***(may use Earthquakes notes, Acc Eng wrksht, Med Ultrasound wrksht (& Rumble notes), Good Vibrations wrksht – for the back.

Finding “n” of water• Each lab table gets 1 laser, 1 sheet of paper, 1 box:• Trace the box in the middle of the paper (tape it?)• Set the laser light up at about 20-40 degrees incident to the box (tape it?)• Make a small dash mark where the laser light enters the box – incident (and

label it “a”)• Make a small dash mark where the laser light exits the box when empty (and

label it “b”)• Fill the box with water• Make a small dash mark where the laser light now exits the box with water in it

(and label it “c”)• Put ALL group members names on paper, and had it to the teacher to make

copies for all.• If you finish quickly, you may then “play” with the fiber optics cables or the

optics filters or the prisms – see your teacher• Tomorrow:• Draw a line through a-b OUTSIDE the box (incident ray)• Draw a line through a-c INSIDE the box (refracted ray)• Measure & draw in the normal• measure (& write in) incident & refracted angels• Use Snell’s Law to calculate the n for water• Do a % error calculation

AC 3-8 (look in book and/or new Guided Notes for the answers we haven’t covered yet!)

(b) Make sure mirror diagrams 1-6 are done, and lenses 1-3 are done (do not attempt lenses 4-6 on your own!)

1 / f = 1 / do + 1 / di

- di / do = hi / ho = magnificationConcave mirrors &

convex lenses (diagrams 1-5) have positive focal lengths.

A negative d, means the image is virtual.

An infinite () di means

the image is non-existent (diagram 4).

Convex mirrors & concave lenses (diagrams 6) negative focal lengths.

A negative h, means the image is upside down (inverted).

Any problem about the sun or other stars as an object means use do = infinity.

The focal length of a "planar" mirror is infinity (recall that 1/ = 0 and that 1/0 = )

***Note - because of the negative sign in the 2nd equation, it is not possible to have a real erect image!***

Lasers with reflection• Work in pairs of tables across lab tables (9 people?)• Only FAR lab table has laser “ON”.• Shine laser on first mirror across isle to nearby lab table.• Bounce laser from first mirror to 2nd mirror back across

lab tables.• Bounce laser from 2nd mirror to 3rd mirror back across

lab tables.• Hit all 9 mirrors; the last mirror is the big one. The light

must bounce off of that mirror onto the top knob of the sink at the far lab table.

• First pair of lab groups to get all mirrors gets extra credit; some xc for 2nd place (if there is one). If we run out of time, group with most mirrors wins.
