FAMILY ADVENTURE WITH YOUR CHILDREN

• Be enthusiastic: Why should kids get fired-up about an outdoor adventure if you're not?

• Involve your kids: Make trip planning a family affair. Ask your children for ideas of things to do or see at your destination. Take their input seriously.

• Kids as packers: Give children the responsibility to pack their own gear at home (using a list you've created). Just remember to double-check your child's packing job before leaving home.

• Favorite toys: Let the children bring some of their favorite playthings.

• Friends are valuable: It can be fun for children to camp with another family that has kids. Your kids may get bored with adults after a while. With playmates, they could be happily occupied for days.

• Bring bikes: Bikes are handy in a campground, so consider bringing them along. If it's a long way from your campsite to the beach or play area, it's faster (and more fun) to use a bike instead of walking or firing up your vehicle. Bikes keep children entertained too.

• Family-camping rule No. 1: Be prepared to cope with inconvenience. Everything is in a different place. The bathroom is no longer down the hall, it is 6 campsites down the path. As an adult, you must lead by example with an upbeat, can-do attitude.

• Organize: Establish fixed locations for important items, such as, "The forks and spoons are in the blue tub," and "torches are

in the ....."• Keep everyone oriented: Help children

memorize the number of your campsite or point out landmarks ("We're 4 sites from the swimming pool") to help them remember its location.

• Make kids feel important: Kids like to be involved. Assign them some meaningful camp chores, such as helping to set up the tents or collecting water. Recognize their contributions with praise or a treat.

• Just Do It! Introduce children to fishing at a young age. Neither you or your child actually has to be fishing the first time out. Taking them to a local dam and walking along the shore is a good first step. Just being outside and seeing people enjoying fishing will trigger even more curiosity from an already curious toddler.

• Catch fish. When you do actually go fishing for the first time, plan to go somewhere where there are plenty of easy ways to catch fish.

• Be patient. Make sure you have enough time without distractions to spend with your child. They are going to make mistakes as they learn. Encourage them and laugh with them during this fun time.

Fresh air, amazing scenery, good company... Nature delivers a full-on sensory experience which everyone can enjoy!

PERFECTFOR DAD!

• Hiking with your child is a great way to get them connected to the outdoors at a young age.

• Try a dry run without your child. Familiarize yourself with the trail, find out what the terrain is really like, and get an idea of how long the hike will actually take.

• Choose a trail that's the right distance and terrain for your youngest hiker. Nothing spoils an outdoor trek more quickly than an unhappy hiker. Whether you're taking a group of children or going with just one, be sure the youngest will enjoy the hike as much as the oldest.

• Go early. You want your child to have his batteries fully charged when you hit the trail.

• Plan rest stops. Children tire easily, so plan to stop and explore more often than not. Choose a spot about halfway through to rest and refuel with snacks and water. Just remember your child will likely be more energized by the journey than the destination, so be flexible if your child gets sidetracked.

• Make it fun for everyone. Think of educational and fun activities to do along the way that will keep your child entertained. Learn to identify some of the local trees and flowers so you can point them out to your child as you wander. Singing, playing games, and telling stories will also keep children interested and make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Enjoy your family adventure and makingMEMORIES!!

Road Trip Snacks:SNACKS THAT KEEP YOU RARING TO GO!When you’re on a road trip with your family, it may seem easy to fall back on takeout food and processed snacks.

Unfortunately, munching on unhealthy foods during a long drive can reduce energy levels, makes kids hyperactive and leave you feeling drained once you reach your destination.

Nutritious treats will keep everyone energized, happy, and healthy this road trip. For your next magnificent adventure, try creating some tasty snacks at home or pick up some wholesome pre-packaged items for easy and good-for-you snacking.

HOMEMADE SNACK OPTIONSProcessed snacks like potato chips can be tempting. They’re neatly packaged, making them easy to pass around a crowded car. You might worry that bringing healthier food will require a lot more preparation, but it’s easier than you think to create a few simple snacks for your family trip.

Check out the following tasty, healthy, and affordable on-the-go treats.

EGGSBoiled eggs: nutritious, filling, and compact.

APPLE SLICES WITH PEANUT BUTTERCutting apples before heading out on the road can be tricky because fresh apples oxidize and turn brown quickly. Prevent oxidization by adding a bit of lemon juice to your cut apples. Finish the slices off with a dab of crunchy peanut butter to add extra protein.

VEGGIES AND HUMMUS DIPVeggies like carrot sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, celery, broccoli, and red and yellow peppers can be easily chopped in advance and tossed in your coolbox

The distinct flavours of each vegetable go well with hummus, the traditional Middle Eastern dip made from chickpeas. Hummus makes veggies more interesting, without adding a ton of empty calories. Make your own home made

healthy Hummus. Flavoured low fat cottage cheese is a good alternative for Hummus. Add some fresh whole wheat pita bread or tortilla wrap for a on the go lunch.

POPCORNPackaged popcorn with light salt flavouring is a great low fat alternative to potato chips. Popcorn is low in saturated fats and cholesterol but high in fibre. Popcorn is bursting with benefits.

Watch out though: some varieties like caramel-corn, butter-coated, and chocolate-drizzled can compromise those health benefits, try to avoid these. Plain salty popcorn can still be mighty tasty, very healthy, and it’s much less messy.

TRAIL MIXYou may think it’s only for hikers, but trail mix offers everything you could want for a snack: it’s crunchy, full of protein, good quality fats and easy to take on the move. Depending on the variety you choose, trail mix can be slightly sweet and slightly salty - just take care to make sure it isn’t too high in sugar or sodium. You can buy packaged Safari trail mixes at your local SPAR store, or you can make your own creations with a variety of raw nuts, dried berries and raisins.

SANDWICHESA small sandwich cut into quarters for easier portion control, without mayo, tomato, lettuce, or other elements that will make it soggy. Try good quality cooked ham with Edam or Gouda cheese on whole grain bread or whole grain roll.

Besige Slabberts familie

Hy was vir ‘n paar weke in Nelspruit Medi-Clinic se Neo-Natal ICU. Februarie 2010… MD was 18 weke oud en ek was 8 weke swanger!!! Wow!!

Voetjies kan natuurlik net so lekker in klei rondtrap. Klei resep op bladsy 16.

SPEEL MET KOSMaak ‘n lekker groot bak pasta gaar.

TOUCH is a child’s 1st language;MOVEMENT is a child’s 2nd language.

Do not deprive a child of these things - Get everybody MOVING through

Mind Moves!

• Tasdefensiwiteit• Swak ouditiewe prosessering• Vertraagde taalontwikkeling• AGS/AGHS• Lae spiertonus• Aandaggebrek• Swak persepsie• Angstigheid• Swak balans

What can Mind Moves offer me?

• School readiness assessment.• Mind Moves Reflex assessment to identify and

remove barriers to learning.• Study fitness to help your child to study according to his brain and learning style. • Mind Dynamix Profile to assist learners to

choose subjects or careers.• Mind Moves workshops for parents, teachers

and therapists.

RUIK EN BOU HERINNERINGEGeur verskillende bolle klei met natuurlike olies of speserye, byvoorbeeld pepermint, laventel, roosmaryn, kaneel, gemmer ens.

JY BENODIG2 koppies water½ koppie sout1 eetlepel Vaseline1 eetlepel alum kristalle (te kry by apteke)5 ml voedselkleursel2 koppies meel

Voeg die meel by.

Tiaan, Danie se jongste antwoord gou: “al dra my pa bangles is dit okay, want my pa is nie ‘n meisiekind nie.

FAMILY NIGHT IN CAMPING INDOORS

I am sure all of us can remember those camping weekends we had as kids – running around the campsite, making new friends, the smell of the braai, stories around the camp fire and eventually crashing into bed (or sleeping bag for that matter) and drifting off to sleep in a matter of seconds…

That was 30 years ago when this mommy was still in primary school. So we made the decision to camp indoors – in our own home! How easy can that be!First off, we needed a designated camping site. After a full 5 seconds of deliberation it was decided that the lounge will be the right spot. Push the lounge suite out of the way, roll out a couple of extra blankets to make a super soft floor and add a few dining room chairs as pillars.

Next up is some blankets to cover the chairs and to serve as the ‘ceiling’ for our custom made tent. Throw in a few pillows, a sleeping bag for my three- year old and a duvet for mom and dad and Bob’s your uncle!

I quickly run a checklist through my head and add a torch and mozzie spray (yes, even indoors) just to make sure we don’t have too many unplanned trips to the bedroom; a whole 4 metres down the passage. So at about 20h00 all of us are bathed and in our pj’s ready to do this thing.

The first demand from my dear son is to let all the pets inside – something mommy didn’t plan for and something mommy quickly realises she has no say in. So the doors open and in marches the labrador, the miniature sausage dog, the maltese mix, and the two cats – all of them utterly stunned at this fortunate turn of events.

After 2 minutes of scratching and snuffing this foreign structure in the lounge, they all make themselves comfortable and my son is in heaven, laughing and squealing between them all. Daddy’s not that impressed with all of this but forces a resigned smile when the labrador makes himself comfortable on his lap and the ‘worsie’ curls up in his armpit. So, in a nasty twist of fate I’m the one now sitting on the cold tile floor “out in the open” whilst camping indoors!

Next up is dinner: a ‘worsie’ (not the dog) and marmite sandwiches that I prepared beforehand – this mom doesn’t have the nerve to light any kind of candle and/or fire inside a thatched house under a blanket… You have to draw the line somewhere! Again the dogs and cats think it is heaven and try their luck on scoring some food, but after a few hysterical screams from me they soon settle down again. For pudding I’ve made some S’mores (can’t camp without them!) and soon everybody’s eyes are getting heavy and it’s time for stories around the flashlight.

After another twenty minutes my three- year old is sound asleep with all his pets around him. He has the most beautiful and content smile on his face and I realise that although this took some trouble and it probably won’t be the best night’s sleep I’ll ever have, it is all worthwhile. Sometimes we as parents must just slow down and realise that doing something fun with our little ones means the world to them – more than any present or any amount of money.

Come to think of it, what can be more fun than sleeping between mom and dad and all the dogs and cats on the lounge floor? It teaches our children that you don’t always need a TV, ipad or computer to have fun. It shows that you don’t necessarily have to go somewhere else to do something special, and above all, that real family time is the most special of all!

My dogter het my ‘vervang’. My vrou het my ‘vervang’. Selfs die hond het my ‘vervang’ Die rede: “Ek wil net gou….”

• my dogter (8) het nou ‘n ‘boyfriend’, my seun (5) het ‘n ‘imaginary friend’.

Duidelik is ek

Familie tyd verdien tien minute.

If anyone has ever wanted to fly a real aeroplane but your budget did not allow it I have the answer. I met the guys of the Nelspruit (Lowveld) Model Aircraft club this past weekend at the Lowvled Airshow. What a bunch of great guys! If dad and son ever needed a past time to engage in quality family activities this must be number one on the list.

The Lowveld Model Aircraft Club is dedicated to the aviation industry in a totally different way. One can start off by buying a scale model plane or helicopter at around R1000.00 in battery powered form and spend as much as R100 000.00 on a real life scale model, almost identical to a real life piston or jet powered aircraft.

The amount of shows and club events held by them is on a regular basis and you can go and check out the club showing off their model planes at the LOMAC Airfield every weekend in Rocky’s Drift. The attention to detail is amazing and these guys are just as passionate about their flying as the mainstream pilots are about their machines. I would urge you to go and visit them

and see what this is all about. From a family fun point of view just about anyone can engage in this sport and start a hobby that might lead them to becoming a full blown aircraft or helicopter pilot in the future. The range of scale model aircraft includes aeroplanes, helicopters and gliders.

Go on and take the kids and introduce them to this fun family activity in which everyone can share. The next formal show is to be held at the airfield on the 2nd of August from 08H00 in the morning.

The day will include and expert flying display, scale model exhibits, hobby shop stalls, food stalls, beer tents and a lucky draw!

FUN WITH WATEROur Earth seems to be unique among the other known celestial bodies. It has water, which is crucial to our survival

Actually, only 1% of the world's water is usable to us. About 97% is salty sea water, and 2% is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. Thus that 1% of the world's water supply is a precious commodity necessary for our survival. Dehydration (lack of water) will kill us faster than starvation (lack of food). Since the plants and animals we eat also depend on water.

• Water has three different states, liquid, solid and gas.

• The word water usually refers to water in its liquid state. The solid state of water is known as ice while the gas state of water is known as steam or water vapour.

• Each molecule of water is made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded to a single oxygen atom.

• Found in the Pacific Ocean, the Mariana Trench is the deepest known point in the world’s oceans.

• Ocean tides are caused by the rotation of the Earth and the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun acting on ocean water.

• Water from a sea or ocean is known as seawater. On average, every kilogram of seawater contains around 35 grams of dissolved salt.

MOM'S DRIVING SAFE

A WHILE BACK WE HAVE RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING

POST ON OUR MOM’S NOTES FACEBOOK PAGE

FROM A VERY CONCERNED READER AND MOTHER:

Would it be possible to publish an article on child safety whilst driving, encouraging parents to strap their kids into seats. I play "moms taxi" on a daily basis, and it frightens

me to see how many children are standing between the drivers and passenger seats, leaning on the dashboard, standing on the back

seat looking at the cars behind etc. It is something that is particularly

prevalent in Nelspruit. Kind regards.

With this in mind we have decided to not only do an article on this very urgent matter, but to also launch a “Mom’s Driving

Safe” campaign. We urge all moms (and dads) to take this

pledge with us to ensure your own, your children’s, and all

other road user’s safety. We also urge anyone that

wants to become involved in, or sponsor this campaign to

contact us. As moms ourselves we cannot stress the importance of this campaign enough – if you lose your child because of your own negligence it is bad enough,

but to be responsible for the death or injury to someone

else’s child is incomprehensible.

Please take a moment to think very deeply about this and follow our pledge on the

following page to promise that you will be a "Mom driving

safely" from now on!

AVOID DRIVING WHILE YOU'RE TIRED.

I Care 4 U

Telephone - (013) 752 2140 | Fax - (013) 752 1661 Email - [email protected] | Address - 36 Brander street, Nelspruit

I CARE – SHOW THEM YOU TRULY MEAN IT

We see them every day - the homeless, begging for money at most every intersection around the city. As motorists, we are reluctant to hand them money as the perception is that they will “only buy booze or drugs”. Unfortunately, this form of stereotyping has adversely affected many of the homeless that are in real need of food and shelter, irrelevant of the circumstances that led them to that point.

With this in mind the Nelspruit Community Forum (NCF) - a project of the Mpumalanga Leadership Foundation – has embarked on a truly humanitarian initiative with the aim of offering the help to those that justly need it.

The I-Care 4 U Loyalty Card program will not only encourage the community to help the needy, but also offer assurance that your effort will be used for its intended purpose.

Members of the public will now be able to purchase a booklet containing 10 perforated vouchers that can be handed to a homeless person at any intersection. The recipient will then be able to redeem the voucher for a meal or any other service as stipulated on the voucher. The cost of one of these booklets is only R100.

We all look forward to vacation time with our family. Flights & hotels are booked. Entertainment and meals are planned. There is a considerable amount of time, research, and energy put into planning the vacation. Yet, how much time each year is dedicated to the overall financial plan for your family?

Here is some advice as you focus on financial planning for your family:

DO1. Set and prioritize goalsWhile this sounds simple, it becomes more complicated as goals are shared with a spouse.2. Save, save, saveWorking years are accumulation years. This is your opportunity to save for your goals. The more you save today, the sooner you can begin to achieve your financial goals.3. Do diversifyWork with an investment advisor to develop a diversified portfolio. There are tax implications that are often overlooked. 4. Do sign estate planning documentsWork with a financial advisor to draft and sign documents such as wills, trusts. By not signing these documents, you are allowing someone else to make a decision for you.5. Do identify and address insurance needsInsurance needs have to be reviewed. Work with a professional to identify needs. A missing piece could stop your family from living the life you dream for them and leave them with a burden too heavy to bear.

DON’T1. Do not waitAs we all know, time flies. We are pulled into many directions with work, kids, parents, friends etc and rarely find the time to focus on ourselves. The financial well-being of our family needs to be a top priority. DON’T WAIT! Take time to focus on your financial needs and prioritize goals.2. DO NOT spend, spend, spendIt is easy to find opportunities to spend money. It is important to budget and plan for expenses rather than spending beyond your means and jeopardizing your goals.3. Do not keep up with the JonesesEvery family has different resources and needs. If you try to keep up with the Joneses, you may be sacrificing your own financial future.4. Do not take on unnecessary debtOnce the spending starts, it is hard to get out of the hole. Don’t spend money that you don’t have5. Do not try to do it all yourselfWhile many people try to piece together a financial plan, they would never try to perform their own surgery or draft their own legal documents. Financial planning is too important for a family’s well-being to be taken lightly. Financial planners can work with you to be sure all of these steps can be addressed and completed.

With leaves falling left, right, and center during winter, clogged gutters can potentially become one of the biggest maintenance problems which a household can face. Annatjie Harmse, Operational Director of Swift Group, outlines some of the common problems with gutters, and shows the real importance of keeping them shiny and clean.

“Gutters are part of your roofing system and require regular maintenance to keep your home looking nice and to help prevent damage from the elements,” says Annatjie. She explains that, by directing rainwater away from the perimeter of your home, gutters are the first line of defense against water seeping into your house.

“So if your gutters are clogged with debris or not in operative shape, they will not function properly, potentially resulting in serious damage to your home,” she points out. Water can even collect around the foundation of your house, weakening it and causing significant structural problems. In addition,

the build up of water, twigs, leaves and other debris, can become so heavy that the entire gutter can loosen and fall away from its attachments. You or your children wouldn’t want to be standing underneath the gutter when this happens. In the colder regions of the Lowveld, where freezing can sometimes occur in winter, your clogged gutters can form ice dams. Home improvement expert Bob Vila warns that ice dams can become so heavy they can also rip the gutter right off your home, resulting in costly repair bills.

“Ants, mosquitos, cockroaches and even rodents, will find the debris highly attractive, and if they are living in your gutters, there’s a good chance they’ll pay a visit to your home too,” says Annatjie. Droppings from these various animals can also add harmful bacteria to the mix.

So what needs to be done to avoid the potential catastrophe caused by clogged gutters? Well it’s simple: your gutters need to be cleaned out on a regular basis.Unfortunately, gutter cleaning is a tedious and filthy task, and can even be scary and downright dangerous, particularly in two-story homes.

“You need to have all the correct safety measures in place, the right equipment and be extremely careful,” Annatjie warns.
