26 Honor Roll of Donors

Dear Friends,

greetings from the President

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Those words from the book of Ecclesiastes came to mind as I was reflecting on the content of this year’s “Momentum.” Our culture of obsolescence is too often comfortable with a different motto—“Do what it takes to get by or do no more than you have to.” We are all too familiar with the results of that attitude. So it delights me that the stories you will find in this publication reflect the first view, not the second. There is nothing minimalist in the attitude of donors like Neil and Gena Griffin or the community volunteers who make the Hill Country College Fund a perennial success. These are people who dig deep to contribute to something about which they are passionate. Similarly, as you read the stories about living and learning communities, our language consortium, expanded musical ensembles, student service engagement, Schreiner Recycles and an athletic program going places, I hope you see something of the passion for quality that animates our campus. Not every Schreiner graduate is as quickly appreciative as Stephanie Samayoa of the broad

interplay of learning opportunity and personal support a Schreiner education affords, but it is a discovery that many make not long after they graduate and go on to work or further study. There are various ways to capture this aspect of life at Schreiner. I have called it a passion for quality. It is certainly a feature of “learning by heart,” because what you do with all your might, you do from the heart. And of course, our ability to accomplish those things that have been done as well as those we are still dreaming of is intertwined with the passion that you, our friends and donors, have for the work we have claimed now for nearly 90 years. Again, to quote Ecclesiastes, “Two are better than one,” and we at Schreiner are indeed made better by our relationship with you—our community and our friends.

All the best,

C. Tim Summerlin President

Hill Country realtor Harold Crocker is the 2012-13 chair of the longest-

running annual campaign that Schreiner relies upon each year: the Hill Country College Fund (HCCF). In a way, his volunteer leadership has come full circle; in the 1970s, Crocker served as Schreiner’s business manager. Thus, he knows firsthand that scholarships for local students are critical. Crocker’s first order of business was to select his “Cabinet”—a group of respected citizens who could help put together a volunteer workforce to raise funds in Kerr, Kimble, Kendall, Bandera, Edwards, Real and Gillespie Counties. Students from these counties are eligible to receive Hill Country Tuition Grants from proceeds of the annual campaign. Assisting Crocker are leaders Jeff Talarico, Helen Herd, Mike Graxiola, Cindy Becker and Dr. David Smith. A Kerrville financial advisor, Talarico will head the Advanced Gift division which works to secure major gifts in time for the campaign’s kick off in late September. Helen Herd will lead the Community Gifts Division. A veteran volunteer at SU, Herd has previously worked the Learning by Heart fundraisers Schreiner hosts each spring. Kerrville Daily Times publisher Mike Graxiola adroitly leads the Business Gifts Division. Fortunately for Schreiner, Graxiola has a hard time saying no, apparently. This is his third year as a major leader for the campaign.

The University Gifts Divisions depends upon the generosity of campus faculty and staff. Cindy Becker, alumna and the president’s administrative assistant, and Dr. David Smith, dean of the Cailloux School of Professional Studies, are aptly leading the internal campaign. Development officer Beth Johnson is liaison to the Cabinet and more than 50 volunteers who are enthusiastically asking their friends, neighbors and business associates to contribute to this important campaign.

Almost $9 MillionAmount SU will provide in direct scholarships, grants and campus jobs this academic year— a new and challenging record!

Kerrville residents Gena and F. O’Neil Griffin have

thoughtfully created an estate plan that will fund a significant scholarship in four years. Proceeds from a charitable trust that concludes in 2016 will underwrite one of the largest endowments Schreiner will own and will benefit Hill Country students in perpetuity. A well-known philanthropist and business leader, Griffin believes in “paying it forward.” He and Mrs. Griffin have generously supported scholarship endowments for Alamo College, Arkansas State (his alma mater) and now, Schreiner University. They are also major contributors to cancer research and the arts. Hill Country students with strong academic credentials will be eligible for the Griffin Endowed Scholarships for four continuous years, provided they

maintain a 3.5 grade point average and excel as campus citizens. President Tim Summerlin is elated with this show of support. “Neil is a former trustee who was instrumental when Schreiner made the transition to baccalaureate status in the early 1980s. Not long ago, he confided in me that he had been observing Schreiner in recent years and was pleased by its positive direction,” the president explains. “What an outstanding way to be a part of that direction—to fund scholarships. Our single most compelling need is always student financial aid. To have an endowment of this size providing annual merit scholarships strengthens our ability to offer a premier learning experience for our students. How grateful we are,” adds Summerlin.

Griffin Family Pledges $2.5 Million for Scholarships

We enjoy a blessed life and believe the best way we can express our gratitude is by helping others along the way. If I had not had a scholarship, a college education would have been enormously difficult to achieve. It’s a lot of fun for Gena and me to know we are helping young people change their lives and their opportunities.

“The Commons” Pays Tribute to Military Heroes and Offers Places for Fellowship and Reflection

An undeveloped area on campus is newly transformed to an attractive gathering

space connecting three strategic buildings. The buried swimming pool with its historic drainage issues is now “The Commons.” Visually connecting the Cailloux Campus Activity Center, the Elaine Griffin Welcome Center and the Scott Schreiner Dining Hall, this area is among the most traveled spots on campus and often one of the first places visitors see. “As our student enrollment grows, the need for welcoming campus places grows, too. It is gratifying to walk through ‘The Commons’ and think about all of the quiet conversations and friendships that will unfold in such an inviting space,” says Peg Layton, vice president of enrollment and student services. “As I walk from the parking lot to my office, I think how lucky I am to have a lovely park greeting me every morning.” In addition to furniture, landscaping and shade, “The Commons” features a Memorial Wall honoring 103 Schreiner former students who died in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The plaques with their names will arrive later this fall. “In a busy world it is important to have places that allow, even urge, us to be contemplative,” says President Tim Summerlin. “And it is important—given our history as a military prep school—to have a space that honors the service of those who lost their lives serving our country.” “Our Memorial Wall will bear witness of their sacrifice to present and future generations despite the passage of time and the distractions of a busy world,” he adds.

Shade, landscaping, a stage:“The Commons” offers an informal gathering space for groups of all sizes.

Local artist and craftsman James Avery volunteered to help with the Memorial Walk and Wall’s design and has diligently guided the limestone and red brick edifice from concept to reality. An active and generous patron of Schreiner for more than 30 years, Avery is well noted for his keen interest in aesthetics—not only for the jewelry his namesake company creates, but also for buildings and grounds, interiors and exteriors. Avery also has a military past. As a B-26 pilot, Avery flew 44 missions over Germany in World War II. And his own birthday coincidentally falls on Pearl Harbor Day: Dec. 7.

Schreiner is thoughtfully making every corner of campus as attractive as it can be, given our semi-arid environment. I am so happy to help with this campus scape—not only for the inviting, park-like environment it creates, but also because this tribute to courageous young people is proper and right. — James Avery

next on the Drawing Board

Schreiner is seeking gifts totaling $10.6 million to complete funding

for the second phase of campus improvements in athletics and recreation. Mountaineer Center, a 27,000 sq. ft. health and recreation center, opened to rave reviews in 2009. A drive-through on the east side of campus reflects millions of dollars invested in that new building and in the upgrading of tennis courts, softball and soccer fields, the swimming pool and Edington Gym. All agree that it is now time to make the second phase a top construction priority. As an independent university, all funding comes from friends, businesses and charitable foundations—not from state allocations.

Plans include a new gymnasium worthy of NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. The 35,000 square foot facility—tentatively called the SU Event Center—will address a serious shortage of gymnasium space. Current athletic and intramural facilities face enormous scheduling challenges, and some teams have to host practice sessions as early as 6:30 a.m. or as late as 9:30 p.m. New lighting on the athletics fields will also permit night games, adding much more flexibility. The new Event Center will also provide a welcome gathering space for all-university events, such as baccalaureate and commencement exercises. In addition, during some times of the year, this modern facility will be available for other Hill Country organizations to use and enjoy.

57%of Schreiner’s athletes achieved a 3.0 or better grade point average last spring. The women’s softball team snagged an impressive 3.47 GPA, while the men’s baseball team turned in 3.08—not bad at all.

Schreiner Event Center will relieve facilities shortage and provide an inviting community venue

In 2013, Schreiner will join the Southern Collegiate

Athletic Conference (SCAC), comprised of colleges known for solid academics and competitive athletics. Many consider the SCAC the premier NCAA Division III conference in the West. Schreiner will join six highly respected universities in our region:

Men’s Basketball Team Clinches First Post-Season Play

Schreiner’s men’s basketball team made history last school year. With a home win over Concordia

University in February, the team earned SU’s first-ever post-season bid to American Southwest Conference tournament play. Although the team fell to Dallas in the first round, the men and coach Drew Miller entered school record books with 13 overall wins and 11 conference wins. New coach Jimmy Smith takes over the team in 2012-13.

We believe that the athletics experience has a particularly important function at SU. Our goal for every team and every student is excellence in everything we do. That starts with academics, but we also understand that athletic opportunities are very important to a student choosing a college. Our commitment is to use the sports experience to help young people best prepare for great success in life.

Schreiner now offers four Living and Learning Communities (LLC’s)

for entering freshmen, enabling them to share their college experiences—in and out of the classroom—with other new students with similar interests and/or career goals. These communities include ACE, Exodus, Honors and Vesalius—each providing a dedicated living space in one of SU’s dormitories and a plentiful variety of learning opportunities. These include specific coursework and research assignments, guest lectures, field trips and service projects. These customized learning environments are another reflection of the administration and faculty’s commitment to create and sustain a premier place of learning.

A.C.E. stands for awareness, connection and engagement. It gathers those students who want to explore various majors and career opportunities before choosing specific academic paths. Students will learn to recognize and fine-tune their own values, skills and interests through a variety of activities, including actual work experience. They will also connect with alumni and friends in the workforce and discover potential opportunities for summer internships. Director of Career Services, Cristina Martinez and “Schreiner Connects” volunteer, Janet McKinney, will guide this program.

Exodus began in 2011 and emphasizes academics, discipleship, service and off-campus retreats. The Rev. Gini Norris Lane, campus minister, views Exodus as an extension of a lively campus ministry program at SU. The resident advisor is campus ministry assistant director, Hayley Marlar.

Honors allows academically advanced students to collaborate on ideas, participate in challenging research concepts, and grow as student leaders. While the Honors Program has existed for many years, this fall launches the first intentional living community for first-year Honors students. In addition to serving as mentors to other students, Honors members will be selecting service and research projects this semester that have an impact on both the campus and the community. Rexford Quick, Digital Services Librarian, is Honors Program Director.

The Vesalius community will be taking selected courses together and discussing pertinent topics during regular community meetings and spontaneous conversations in the dorm. Named after the “Father of Anatomy,” Dr. Andreas Vesalius, this new LLC serves freshmen students intending to pursue medicine-related careers.

Dr. Pauline Chen’s “Final Exam: A Surgeon’s Reflections on Mortality” is the Vesalius LLC’s book for the semester.

I hope the Vesalius Living and Learning Community will nurture creative, interdisciplinary

thinking in ways that the health professions are actually thirsting to see. Many students do not perceive health care as an interdisciplinary and imaginative enterprise; however, the next steps of progress in health care will be built by exactly the kind of innovative and intercon-nected development that Schreiner (and specifically Vesalius) can foster.

As faculty advisor, Muskievicz is well-equipped for the role with a Ph.D. in Medical Humanities and thousands of hours of experience in medical settings. She is a member of the Peterson Regional Medical Center’s Biomedical Ethics Committee and has guided medical students and residents in healthcare ethics from neonatal ICUs to traditional end-of-life concerns.

Generous Gift Enables New Videoconferencing Facilities

A family with historic ties to university libraries has made a

generous gift that enables Schreiner to enter the high tech world of distance learning with equipment that rivals resources at any other colleges—public or private, large or small. The William Logan Library debuts its first high definition video conferencing studio this fall and enables 21st century learning to take place in an exciting new way—the Texas Language Consortium. Dr. Candice Scott, associate vice president for academic affairs for library, technology and academic services, says the gift came with perfect timing.

“Teleconferencing technology in the Scarle-Philips Room will not only allow us to launch our foreign language consortia courses, but will also let faculty teaching any course to bring guest speakers or panels to their students seamlessly and with high definition reception that negates the issue of distance,” she explains. “This gift from the Philips family honors the memory of bibliophile Lavon Philips, a lifelong patron of libraries. It provides a complete renovation of the space that will add laptop workstations and comfortable areas for small group discussions, too,” Scott adds. “We could not be more pleased.”

Starting this Fall Texas Language Consortium Makes the State Our Classroom

Schreiner is a charter member of the Texas Language Consortium,

a collaboration of five liberal arts colleges that are expanding foreign language options to students. Consulting on the pilot program is the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education, a non-profit agency that helps liberal arts universities enrich undergraduate education through new teaching methods and advanced technology. Schreiner will teach German to college students across the state, thanks to the skill of Silke Feltz, English and German instructor. Feltz is a native of Bavaria, Germany, who joined the SU faculty in 2008. Other schools include Concordia University in Austin (teaching Mandarin Chinese), Texas Lutheran University in Seguin (Spanish), and Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth (French). Each university will provide courses through high-definition video conferencing labs with assigned faculty and proctor support. Lubbock Christian University will also enroll students in these classes and expects to offer instruction in subsequent years. “This consortium represents an effort to improve the quality of the educational experience for students at our institutions in a way that is cost effective,” comments Dr. Charlie McCormick, SU provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We hope the additional breadth and depth of languages that we offer students will encourage all of our students to develop competency in a second or even a third language.”

While classwork, tests and final exams limit their performance calendars, Schreiner’s music faculty

and students need and appreciate displaying their talents for community events. This year, the new Chamber Ensemble launches and the Concert Band starts its second year of activity. Add these to choral groups of various sizes and a variety of musical offerings become available. Are you responsible for a civic club program or a holiday party? All of Schreiner’s musical groups (except for Symphony of the Hills) are available for bookings, subject to the academic calendar. Please contact the faculty advisor to find out more.

Choral music director Michael Kahl led 17 students and some

community friends on a musical tour of Ireland May 19-28. They performed at Kylemore Abbey in Galway, St. John’s Church in Tralee, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and with an Irish choir in Kill. And, of course, they toured the Emerald Isle’s beloved and beautiful historical sites. Students also enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime experience of participating in a master class at the Cork School of Music. Here, they learned techniques for improving their overall quality, including listening more closely to their group sound rather than focusing just on individual performance.

Choral students raise funds for two years before an international trip. Thanks to sellout crowds for their spring Musical Theatre—“From Doo-Wop to the Age of Aquarius”—the group raised more than $10,000 to help defray costs. Several encouraging friends also made contributions to their trip and/or purchased auction items. A significant side effect of their trip is students’ growth as they learn to travel together. According to Kahl, students learn to be punctual, flexible, observant and kind. And, of course, they return to America with far deeper appreciation of other cultures. All signs of learning by heart…

Schreiner students pursuing violin, viola or cello have a unique opportunity to learn from an

internationally known master musician. Concertmaster for Symphony of the Hills, Mr. Long Zhou offers private lessons for Schreiner’s lucky students. A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of China and the University of Houston, Zhou is a member of the San Antonio Symphony and past associate concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been a soloist with the symphonies of Shanghai, Beijing, Austin and Houston and has been the guest artist for the Shen Zhen Symphony in China and the Macau Symphony. Zhou is director and founder of Strings in Motion, a youth string ensemble in San Antonio.

An international blessing

One of Zhou’s star protégées is his daughter, Nancy, an international competitor now studying at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory of Music.

Dear Dr. Comuzzie, I never realized how much of a different

education Schreiner has to offer. I can see

while I’m here at Duke and we work in

groups and present what a big difference

the liberal approach to teaching makes

for how people communicate. These kids

would have been eaten alive in most of the

classes I’ve taken at SU. They are smart as

whips, but incapable of expressing that or of

thinking outside exactly what they are told.

I can’t imagine them doing the showcase or

a “Miller”* problem set, or even a group-

worked synthesis. Thanks for that, and I wish I could thank

the whole academic body. But I’ll settle

for the professors who have helped and

influenced me the most.

Thoughts from SMDEP,

Jake

* Just what is a “Miller”? Chemistry professor Kiley Miller rarely believes in administering a traditional test. Instead, he sends students all over campus much like a scavenger hunt—measuring this, analyzing that, determining what kind of equipment is needed for thorough analysis. Jake (pictured above)—who intends to do graduate study in biomedical research—explains: “Miller’s problem sets require not just knowledge, but also an equal measure of creativity and academic courage.” Students have been known to brag that they have spent as much as 24 hours on a take-home test.

From an e-mail written by Jake Crawley, SU junior and biochemistry major, to his professors during his study this summer at Duke’s Summer Medical and Dental Enrichment Program (SMDEP), a competitive and difficult program in which to gain acceptance.

2012 graduate, Stephanie Samayoa headed to Washington D.C.

a few weeks ago to begin classes at George Washington School of Law. Ranked in the nation’s top 20 law schools, George Washington attracted Stephanie, who is from Spain, because the school has a strong international program in a city “full of intellectuals, career opportunities, and incomparable cultural, political and social events.” Samayoa says Schreiner gave her the confidence to step out of her “comfort zone” and realize she could accomplish anything she worked hard to obtain, including competing for and securing acceptance at several top-tier law schools. Samayoa’s praise centers on the faculty. “Schreiner developed my writing skills by

providing seminars, challenging classes and thoughtful feedback from professors,” Samayoa said. “On every single essay I wrote, I received excellent recommendations and various points of view from professors who helped me become proficient, articulate and concise.” “I am so thankful to the people who offered me a scholarship to attend SU and continued to support all of my endeavors. I had the best support system at Schreiner. Whether it was my mentor, Dr. Adam Feltz, or my sorority sisters, I never felt alone or abandoned. I always felt like I fit in and I am so happy and excited for the rest of my future,” the future international lawyer adds. “Everyone at SU made my journey the best and I will remember my undergrad experience with so much love and appreciation.”

community Outreach

Schreiner’s history faculty and librarians have worked

nonstop since SU took possession of a downtown treasure: the former home on Earl Garrett Street of Captain Charles Schreiner and his family. Their hard work was joined by the enthusiasm and sweat equity of the 2012 class of Leadership Kerr County, who chose the Mansion project for their brains and brawn as a leadership class. Officially reopening in May as the Schreiner Mansion Historic Site and Education Center, this stately downtown landmark now has a bright future as a gathering place for symposia, meetings, exhibits and even weddings. “This service project by Leadership Kerr County powerfully contributes to the revitalization of downtown,” explains Mark Tuschak, vice president for advancement and public affairs. “Many donors and volunteers contributed significant funding and many hours to make this project a success.”

Claiming New Life for a Grand Old Building

895 Bodies (visitors, that is) strolled through opening weekend of the Schreiner Mansion, Historic Site and Education Center. This grand old Kerrville landmark, now the property of SU, had an exciting past—first as Captain Charles Schreiner’s family home and later as The Hill Country Museum. Watch for an interesting array of exhibits, lectures and gatherings in years to come.

When a Schreiner student’s uncle lost everything in the Bastrop

wildfire last September, 26 students went to help almost immediately. During spring break, a group representing four denominations returned to offer muscle, sweat, heart and prayers. Working with long-term volunteers at Faith Village in Smithville, students completed more than 200 hours of service. Their task? Creating a volunteer village to house teams of volunteers for the next several years as Bastrop continues its recovery. The work was gratifying, though not glamorous: setting up bathroom trailers, cutting down trees, grating, digging and plumbing.

Campus Minister, the Rev. Gini Norris-Lane led the groups on both work missions. “We’ve come to understand that it takes so much more than good intentions to really make an impact,” Norris-Lane said. “That wildfire was to Bastrop County what Katrina was to New Orleans. If through our participation in the President’s Challenge and Better Together we can give students the skills needed to organize and address larger community issues, then we will have succeeded in creating a new generation of leaders. They will be ready to work with diverse groups to implement solutions to the problems that plague their communities.”

The brain-child of

education instructor Karen Backor, the SU Reading and Writing Academy has been changing lives for the last five years.

The “Academy” welcomes youngsters who have been nominated by their teachers to “help” college students become better teachers. What the young-sters do not know is that they, themselves, are in need of remedial reading and writing education. When the young students arrive on campus,

they find smart, dedicated people who believe in their potential to learn and who are committed to increasing their young charges’ self confidence and skills. According to Backor, it is soul-satisfying to watch entire families change their views about education and even their life goals. As the children dramatically improve their reading and writing skills, their ambitions to finish school—and even go to college—grow. And, of course, pre-service teachers gain an impressive credit to put on their resumes: working successfully with at-risk children. The SU Reading and Writing Academy is a contender for the 2012 Star Award for “Closing the Gaps,” a competition sponsored by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

New Vice President Pleased to Join Schreiner Team

Mr. Bill Muse, former associate vice

president for university planning, budgeting and analysis at The University of Montana, joined the senior administration last fall. In addition to praising his colleagues for thoughtfully managing “the phenomenal growth of the past decade,” Muse is impressed at the level of philanthropy Schreiner’s donors display. “SU is increasingly a premier place of learning, transforming the lives of its students,” Muse observes. “I have had the chance to see firsthand the outstanding young people who emerge from their Schreiner experience, and to see the interaction and connection between these students and the faculty and staff at Schreiner whose work exemplifies what we mean when we say ‘Learning by Heart.’”

17.2 TONS

It is gratifying to see something the students started have such a visible positive impact on the

environment, while also reducing waste disposal expenses. Our campuswide recycling effort involves students at every level, from those who are using the recycling bins the student senate purchased for the dorms and apartments, to those who drive the gator to gather and transport the materials across campus to the Recycling Center. “It is an example of experiential learning,” says Muse, “and is only the beginning of what we will see over the next few years, as students, faculty and staff team up to be good stewards of the environment.”

Under Muse’s Leadership and Student Senate’s Initiative:

Recycling Saves Thousands of Dollars in Campus Operations

Assistant Professor of English Sally Hannay joined the faculty in 2005 and lives with her family in Comfort. She is the 2010 and 2012 winner of the Conference of College Teachers of English Poetry Award. She is waiting to hear if this poem will be published in the CCTE’s next journal.

My Family BiologyBy Sally Hannay

I have a son who is the equilibrium of the family. He balances us like the ball on the seal’s nose, the keel of our boat, the lightning rod of our structure. He carries us like a big square draft horse, rarely stumbling. When he does stumble,we all taste dirt.

I have a son who is the memory of the family, the scrapbook, the catalog of our journey. When he isn’t there to record our doings,it is almost as if they didn’t happen.

I have a daughter who is the heart of us all,who suffers all our losses and notices all our improvements. She finds our lost things andis the tiger mother of us, as us.

I have a husband who is the immune system, the courage, the skin, the tough outer layer, the defender against germs and intruders, and the mechanic of our inner workings.

I suppose I am the slightly over-sensitive nervous system, the worrier, the over-reactor, the panic button, the barking dog.

I surely need my daughter’s heartand my son’s balance,my son’s memory,my husband’s courage.

I would be only nervous without them.

It is my passion to help my students learn and grow to their greatest potential. As I was earning my master’s degree, Schreiner’s professors helped me integrate my own teaching philosophies with current state and national mandates. With my coursework and newfound knowledge, I am now able to be an educational leader and facilitator as a first grade teacher at Fredericksburg Elementary. It is also fun to share my experiences and knowledge with Schreiner students who will become teachers.

SU recognized Janet McKinney, a Kerrville

resident and SU trustee, as Volunteer of the Year for 2012. Janet gives hundreds of hours and is willing to travel anywhere to help connect Schreiner students with alumni and others who agree to mentor them about career opportunities.

8,019 volunteer hours were given last year to Schreiner by 193 friends and alumni. And in the same spirit, 433 students invested 6,407 hours in community service.

The Schreiner Oaks Society recognizes those friends who have included Schreiner in their estate plans.

While most of these commitments will not be fulfilled for many years, our entire learning community is encouraged by the knowledge that Schreiner’s financial future grows stronger by each gift. If you have included Schreiner in your will or other means—or if you would like to know how to do so—please call 830-792-7205. You do not have to disclose specific details of your plans to qualify as a member of the Schreiner Oaks Society.

The Scarle-Philips Room in Logan Library is the proud home of SU’s new teleconferencing center, thanks to a gift from Verne Philips and his daughter, Susan, in memory of their wife and mother, Lavon.

Schreiner appreciates gifts made as tributes or as memorial recognition.

In most instances, these gifts support general scholarships—always Schreiner’s greatest need. However, we also welcome gifts for other purposes: an academic or co-curricular program, the library, campus ministry, buildings and grounds, general endowment, etc.

Those being honored and the families of those being remembered receive a tasteful card that informs them of the gift and its purpose. Donation amounts are not disclosed. If you would like more information about memorial or tribute giving, please call 830-792-7216. Or, visit us online at www.schreiner.edu/giving

Schreiner students Kevin Lilly, Lizeth De la Torre, Kendra Powers, Tom Pappas and Colby Adolph, trustee Rick Cree and chaperones Rich Lyon and Mark Tuschak spent a week

last summer on a wilderness service project in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Northwest Montana. The group spent five days clearing timber and hiked more than 75 miles.

This is the seventh year for this project graciously funded by Anne and Rick Cree.

Jacob Ockerman

Through the Master of Education program at Schreiner, I have gained a better understanding of the importance of being a reflective practitioner. I have learned how to maintain a consistent focus on student success while regularly examining my teaching methods to determine which strategies and methods work best for students. My passion is physical education at the elementary level. I want to be a positive role model for young students while ensuring that they gain knowledge and skills to adopt physically active, healthy lifestyles.

– Jacob Ockerman

Jacob is applying what he learned at SU in the Boerne Independent School District.
