“
“
grooming the starsthe only things that make styling a star different are
the amount of people around the client (her security
personnel and personal assistants) and the number of
people who then see and judge your work, which is a lot
higher. We have become real specialists at getting cli-
ents out through the back door, to avoid the paparazzi.
We try to make everybody feel like a star for a day. I’ll tell
you something that made me particularly happy: one
summer I received a mysterious phone call asking me
to come and style a client at her home in La moraleja.
they didn’t tell me her name. and when I walked into the
living room, I found myself looking at Victoria Beckham.”

Lorena fernÁnDez, 24 I’m scarfing some ruffles crisps because whenever I go out at night I always get really hungry. I bought them in a Chinese
shop that is open until late. I’m going from bar to bar with some friends. We’ll probably do what we always do and have a drink around here. What we like most
about malasaña is the variety of people you get to meet.

I’m not starving but I fancied a cheese and salad sandwich. We’ve just
come from the réquiem night at the sideral club and we’re heading to a pub called moscú, which is a bit further down. We used to go out around the sol area
but recently we’ve been hanging out in malasaña a lot.

I’m Italian and I’m eating a ham and cheese calzone pizza. I don’t normally choose to eat in the street but tonight that’s just what
happened. I prefer to have a nice meal at home. When we’re done we’re going to see a flamenco concert around the corner from here. I don’t normally come
to malasaña; I usually go out all over madrid. one of my favourite areas is La Latina.

I’ve chosen a ham and cheese pizza from Pizza&Pita, on calle fuencarral. It’s my favourite. there
wasn’t enough room inside to sit down, not even a single free chair, because everyone was watching the football match. We came outside so we could actually
hear ourselves think. I’m with a friend from summer camp and we don’t get to see each other very often so we wanted a bit of time and space to catch up.

from new York and I’ll be in madrid until June. I know it’s weird but I’m actually eating strawberry cheesecake-flavoured ice-cream because I’ve just come
out of the food place… and it was much warmer in there! I’m meeting up with a few friends and we’re going out tonight. We’re going to drink sangria and we’ll
probably end up dancing the night away in some club in the area.

I
thought I’d take the opportunity to catch up with a few mates. It’s not the first time I’ve been to madrid (I come a few times a year), but it is the first time I’ve
ever had a calamari sandwich. I bought it in a bar at plaza mayor. tonight we’ll be drinking a fair few beers in the area around plaza del sol.

“it’s rare that you know your hero. i was lucky enough to know henry. I organised a writers’ conference in edinburgh in 1962, with John Calder and sonia orwell. I organised a party and henry came. he was the hero of everyone there, all the other writers were big fans, and they said so – nor-man mailer, William Burroughs, they all said so. Yet he was so humble about it all. he was just an amazingly gentle and positive individual. I spent a day with him once in a suburb of L.a. It was very close to the end of his life, and the main thing he wanted to talk about, which I found amazing, was Paris. the 14th and 15th arrondisements above all. he liked these areas very much, and he picked my brains about them. so of course I’d like to take him back to those places he loved so well. a few are still much the same. Like the brasserie zeyer (234, avenue du maine) and the more modest Bouquest d’alesia (75, avenue du général Leclerc) just across the street. even that old pissoir that henry loved is still there on the Boulevard arago – and the taxi drivers still stop to use it. We’d walk the beauti-ful streets around alesia, rue de la tombe Issoire; these he’d also find pretty familiar. I’d take him back to the Villa seurat where he used to live, and to the Parc Montsouris (rer station: Cité Universitaire) because I suspect he would enjoy the peace and beauty of the place. then we’d dine at the auberge Des trois saveurs (82, rue hallé, 75014), a local Vietnamese restaurant run by a delightful husband and wife team – michel cooks and hélène serves. michel’s father had one of the first Chinese restaurants in Paris. maybe henry even ate there in the 1930s.”

para los que saben soñar con los ojos abiertos. marc ros is the singer and guitarist of the band sidonie. although he works hard during the day, it is
at night that his mind really gets going. Inspiration keeps him awake, so marc has no other option but to wander the streets while everyone else is tucked up
in bed, revelling in what is only visible to those who know how to dream with their eyes open.
With his deep nocturnal voice full of shadows, scott is my top choice at this hour. Perfect song to listen to on the steps of the Palau nacional whilst contemplating the montjuïc fountains.
“through the sleepless nights I cry for you and wonder who is kissing you.” I imagine that someone is with her on a bench in plaça rius i taulet in the district of gràcia.
3. HeNrY MaNcINI - two for the road la banda sonora de la película epónima de stanley donen es ideal para ser escu-chada en la playa bogatell en cualquier noche calurosa. the soundtrack to stanley Donen’s eponymous film is ideal for the Bogatell beach on any balmy night.
4. THe DIVINe coMeDY - If… ahora que la ciudad duerme y sólo nos queda la luz de una titubeante vela, me dejo llevar de la mano de mi admirado neil hannon. Yo la escucharía en el cementerio de montjuïc, entre mausoleos góticos y cipreses. now that the city is sleeping and the only remaining light comes from a flickering candle, I let myself go to the sound of my beloved neil hannon. I’d listen to him in the cemetery on montjuïc, between gothic mausoleums and cypress trees.
I go back to my childhood and I feel like I might be able to sleep like a baby, but the distant echo of the voice of a siren wakes me up again. that’s the inconvenient thing about living in a big city like Barcelona.
I open my eyes in the darkness, I sharpen my hearing and imagine being on top of the tibidabo mountain, looking at the city at my feet.
I walk the streets of the gothic quarter but feel like I’m in greenwich Village, where, after a party, we decided to form the band.
2. GraM ParSoNS - a song for You esta canción es la que escucho al llegar al hotel después de un concierto de sidonie. es una canción de viaje y me la imagino sonando en mi coche mientras salgo por la gran Vía de barcelona. this is the song I listen to when we get to the hotel after a sidonie concert. It’s a traveller’s song and I imagine it playing in my car while I’m on the gran Via heading out of Barcelona.
Donovan is a good travel companion on the motorways of my imagination. With him, I can hitch-hike on the meridiana road, with a cardboard sign in my hand asking for a destination that doesn’t exist.
You tend to think you’re the only person awake, and that can feel pretty lonely. mina is the cure to all my ailments and I imag-ine listening to her on the Carretera de les aigües on a winter day.
5. NIco - the fairest of the seasons a través de la cortina entran los primeros rayos de sol en mi piso de poble nou. el sonido de la ciudad empieza a aumentar, pero yo estoy tan concentrado en su voz metálica y grave que no puedo oír nada más. through the curtains, the first rays of sunlight enter my flat in Poble nou. the sounds of the city start to get louder, but I’m so fixated on nico’s deep, metallic voice that I can hear nothing else.
6. THe BaND - Whispering Pines decía robbie robertson que esta canción la compuso en la habitación contigua a la de su hijo pequeño mientras éste dormía. tenía que tocar muy bajo y susurrar la melodía para no despertarlo. así de delicada la grabó the band, y yo me quedo dor-mido. robbie robertson said that he composed this song while his little son was asleep next door. he had to play it really quietly and whisper the melody so as not to wake him. the Band recorded it just like that, and I fall asleep.

2008. Director: santiago a. zannou. Intérpretes: Juan manuel montilla “Lan-gui”, ovono Candela, Javier Iglesias “gordo”, elio toffana, fanny gatibelza.
INÉS FONT started in film in 1994 , working at the Cines Verdi. ten years later she crossed over into the world of production, working with directors such as enric folch, Javier Cárdenas, and fernando Colomo. she was the Production Director for El Truco del Manco, as well as for Yo Soy La Juani by Bigas Luna.
2008. director: santiago a. zannou. starring: Juan manuel montilla “langui”, ovono candela, Javier iglesias “gordo”, elio toffana, Fanny gatibelza. “El Truco
del Manco tells the story of enrique heredia, alias ‘el Cuajo’, a local go-getter who is partially paralysed. el Cuajo pursues his passion for music while confront-ing the difficulties posed by his condition and his surroundings, a marginalised part of town. for the film, we wanted to recreate an anonymous area that could be the outskirts of any city, and Barcelona was as good a place as any. Depersonalising a location is hard work: the location and art direction teams have to work closely together. first, you have to choose places that don’t have recognisable characteristics, and then you have to do a kind of cut and paste from one location to the next. In Poble nou, there is the ACME centre (Pu-jades, 135), one of the central places in the film where lots of key moments happen, like when el Cuajo has to go down the stairs to get to the bus stop, a metaphor for the limitations and difficulties he has to overcome in life. right next door is the Restaurante García (Pu-jades, 133), an old and charismatic lunch place that we turned into a kebab house. a bit further north, in Ver-
neda, we found a typical little neighbourhood park that acts as a meeting point for the main characters to hang out and do their wheeling and dealing (Plaça Conxita Badia). the record shop is Microfusa (sepúlveda, 135) a fantastic place where hip-hop and electronica fanatics can buy their ‘wares’. In Bellvitge there is the Bar marquitos, which in real life is called bar la Menta (rambla marina, 287). to recreate the slightly ‘harder’ scenes we went to the La Catalana district, near La mina, in sant adriá del Besós. We recreated a kind of ghetto feel there, with drug addicts and small houses. the area has improved a lot though, and luckily we didn’t have any problems during filming.”

Freedom of speech is a social duty, a natu-ral concept and a human right. We must have the courage to say what we think.
If we say only what others –or “the powerful”– want to
hear, no one will ever get anywhere. When I say “power”,
I am referring to an extended concept of power. Power
can be industry, which communicates to sell a product;
it can be politics; it can be the revolution; it can be the
Church. In fact, the Catholic Church is a perfect example
of a successful advertising company. they produce
communication using its highest expression: art. and
they hired the best artists around: michelangelo and
Bernini both participated in the church’s campaigns.
an advertiser is someone who advertises something
publicly, and I think artists like michelangelo can be
regarded as advertisers in that sense.
Beauty, for me, is whatever I like. there’s not much
else to say about it. It’s a subjective concept, but what’s
important is that I shouldn’t be scared or ashamed to
show what I like and what I do.
Photography is a very powerful tool. a single image
can be more powerful than a whole army. Photography
is the image of mankind. We are what we are in a picture:
grandpa will always be old because we remember the
last picture taken of him. history as we know it today ex-
ists since the birth of photography, as all that happened
before is just words.
I don’t like the word “provocation”, because society
pronounces it with a moralistic significance. so you
are shocked? Well, I am shocked every morning when
I open the paper and read what’s going on in the world.
to provoke also means “to cause”, and in that sense it’s
true, I provoke. I provoke interest, surprise, new energy,
love, culture.
to people who think I create controversy for commer-
cial gain, I reply that they can say whatever they want! so
I work for commercial reasons? Books are written to be
sold. mozart is the most commercial musician in history.
Picasso was the best-paid artist of the past century. Let
the critics talk: they don’t know how to do anything else.

-mi pequeña mayer aramburu, bienvenida a casa.

the return
For three weeks i had been on benedetto croce, in the flat of andrea, the man I’d met
on our last trip to naples. When soledad went back to
Barcelona, I told her I’d stay here with him. In all honesty,
I didn’t believe it myself. the paradox is that, after two
days, I’d actually convinced myself it was possible; that
it was just the kind of change I needed. except…
I knew that soledad would disinherit me for it (at the
time, I still believed that the executor of her will would
eventually announce: “and for mayer aramburu, the
Jeff koons paintings”). she was not of very good health.
Barcelona was my city, for better or for worse, and I
started to miss not the things I loved about it but all the
things I hated.
I sat down on the old sofa in the conservatory and
watched andrea while he fixed the leg of a chair. then
I looked at my feet, freshly pedicured with a Chanel
cherry varnish. You can’t have everything in this life.
the phone rang. soledad. I hadn’t answered her calls
for weeks, but she didn’t bat an eyelid on hearing my
“Pronto!” “mayer, your little ‘affaire’ is adorable, but this
friday we have the ‘shaped Canvas’ negotiations with
elsworth kelly and nothing can go wrong. You have a
ticket waiting for you. Don’t make me call mr. fix It.”
I hung up without saying a word, but my face said it all.
I explained the issue to andrea. “Who is mr. fix It?”
“Um, he’s an old friend of soledad’s. Imagine a cross
between mr. Wolf, sophia Petrilla and the old one out of
the Golden Girls, and some extra out of Snatch.”
“I love that film!” he smiled and held my gaze. “me
too. ‘ze germans’.” I took his hand and leaned on his
shoulder. he smelled of acqua di Parma and andrea.
suddenly, the furniture in the conservatory started to
wobble and lose its shape and my tears fell slowly and
wetted his jumper. “how lucky we have been to have
this, mayer. this is ours forever.” he squeezed my hand.
I arrived in Barcelona on thursday, a warm, breezy
spring day. Waiting in the taxi queue, I looked around
and recognised soledad’s Jaguar. she must have been
sitting behind the frosted windshield, watching, with
her greying but perfect bob, a simple malo cashmere
jumper, her half-read sedaris book in the kelly bag. I
walked towards the car, expecting one of her jokes:
driving off when I opened the door; having hired a dwarf
look-alike; balloons flying out of the car in the shape
of koons tulips. always koons. But I opened the door
and nothing out of the ordinary happened. soledad was
there, a little more tired and aged than when I’d left her
in naples, and she had her little Pug dog Beuys sitting
on her lap, panting and staring at me.
“my little mayer aramburu, welcome home”.
“soledad,” I began, but had no idea how to continue. I
took my seat next to her and she shushed me with one
dismissive shake of her hand. “Let’s go and eat,” I said
finally. “a galician restaurant, my shout. I’m dying for
some octopus and mussels. Can you think of any-
where?” soledad, as always, had the perfect answer.
“Let’s go to my favourite, on calle Urgell: o’retorno”.
the grand Questionsend your questions regarding syle and etiquette to the
mayer-soledad duo ([email protected]), and
they will reply with totally useless information.
“What do you do, if you are in a foreign country and some-
one comes too close when they talk to you? ”
Felipe, 34, Bilbao
soledad: “my dear felipe, I too detest an invasive chat-
terbox. the best thing is to be subtle. Put on your sun-
glasses, smile and say, “Isn’t conjunctivitis just terrible?”

paisaJes españoles In the 1950s, manuel garcía Palazón was a pilot and an
avid amateur photographer. Uniting his two passions, he
created, together with his brother, Paisajes españoles, a
company that today holds an archive of over one million
bird’s-eye photos of pretty much every corner of spain.
Direct witness to the physical changes of the country, in
terms of tourism, landscape and industry, manuel recalls
with nostalgia the early stages of industrial develop-
ment, when he photographed the first installations of
companies that have now disappeared, or the images,
hardly recognisable, of Benidorm or marbella when they
were still fishing villages. he is proud of his 20,000 flight
hours, spread over 30 years, that have turned what could
have been a simple photo album into the memory of a
whole country. www.paisajesespanoles.es

ms hack, why watch the stars? It’s necessary to watch the stars to understand who we
are and where we live, to understand geography, and to
understand the universe. It’s also useful for us to under-
stand where we come from, because the 92 chemical
elements that exist on earth, and which we are made of,
are the product of the nuclear reactions occurring in the
stars. the stars created the elements that created us.
We are made of the same elements as they are.
What do you feel when you look at the stars? It’s a beautiful image, like a lovely dawn or sunset.
What makes the stars so fascinating?I think it’s because they are mysterious and intangible
objects, and for millennia they have been beyond our
understanding. man has only begun to really understand
the stars since the end of the 1800s. astronomy has
managed to rid us of certain fears. When our ancestors
saw a solar eclipse, they thought a dragon had eaten
the sun. they thought comets were a sign of upcom-
ing misfortune. they feared the sun might not rise the
following day.
What is the universe? the universe is everything we are able to observe: our
solar system, our galaxy and other galaxies like ours.
the farthest galaxies observed are 13 billion light years
away from us, which means that their light, which travels
at 300,000 km/sec, takes 13 billion years to get here,
and what we see is a galaxy in the past, as it was 13 bil-
lion years ago. this group of stars and galaxies is what
we call the universe.
What created the universe? science doesn’t know. religious people say it was cre-
ated by god, scientists try to give a secular answer.

the earth was born 4.5 billion years ago, together with the solar system. Will it end?It is very probable. the sun has a beginning and an end;
it evolves. In 5 billion years it will expand and swallow the
earth… and we will be roasted.
how were the star constellations determined? a constellation is not a physical concept; it depends on
how stars appear to be positioned in the sky from down
here. If we use a lot of imagination, we can see that the
stars form certain drawings. If we look at the Ursa major,
for example, we can see a cart or a bird. our ancestors
could admire an unpolluted, dark sky, and they imagined
gods and heroic acts depicted in it. It’s like a “connect
the dots” puzzle. In terms of physics, however, constella-
tions have no real meaning.
do the stars influence our lives in any ways?no.
What do you think of astrology and star signs? It’s a superstition, a remnant of our ancestors’ ignorance.
What are the most interesting things to look for in the sky? Without equipment, or with a small telescope, and
provided you are in a totally dark place, you can see the
milky Way, the moon and mars. With a naked eye, the
celestial arch as a whole is a beautiful show, just like
the sea or the sunset. With a good telescope, however,
we can observe the stars and study their characteristics
on the basis of their luminosity, which is dispersed into
monochromatic colours.
What are the best places to watch stars? We can’t see the stars anymore! there’s too much light
pollution. a starry sky is one of nature’s beauties, but we
are losing it. so there are no good places in europe to
watch the stars. not even the mountains are perfectly
dark. It’s a little better on the Canary Islands.
Which are europe’s best observatories?there aren’t any, because of the light pollution. to see

the stars well, we have to go to the european or-
ganisation for astronomical research in the southern
hemisphere, in the atacama desert, Chile. over here,
even the darkest places are never perfectly dark, and it
would be useless to invest money in a large telescope if
its surroundings are too bright.
What astronomical discoveries were most important in the history of mankind?there are loads! the latest are the discovery that space
is expanding, that the universe is evolving, and that
there’s a large quantity of unidentified matter that can
only be observed through its gravitational effects; this is
known as “dark matter”. and the fact that we now know
that there are many planets in the orbit of other stars
just like our sun.
What could be the next big discovery?Understanding what this “dark matter” actually is, and
finding another planet like earth, another planet where
life has developed. this is definitely possible, but it
would have to be a small planet, and our technology
doesn’t allow us, right now, to see such small planets
outside our solar system. We can see planets like mars,
but not like earth. Yet.
“un cielo estrellado es una belleza de la naturaleza y lo estamos perdiendo” “a starry sky is one of nature’s beauties, but we are losing it”

¡déjame que te enseñe!” student and artist-ruled san Lorenzo
seems like the perfect place for a juggling
shop, “but it’s not just artists who buy
here,” says stefano. “You wouldn’t believe
how many people want to learn, and I am
here to explain the basic techniques.”
stefano has always loved juggling, and
contact juggling is his favourite specialty:
“You move objects, such as balls, while
keeping them in permanent contact with
your body. It’s beautiful. Let me show you!”

When granada was garnata al-Yahud, the realejo was the muslim city’s Jewish Quar-ter. few vestiges remain apart from a hilly area full of
narrow streets and intertwining, sun-dappled alleys.
mariana Pineda, who fought for the liberal cause in the
19th century, is its godmother and the square bearing
her name sits along one of its borders, the one closest
to the Carrera de la Virgen. Its godfather is Yehuda Ibn

realejo from gran Vía, we find ourselves in a deeply
engaged community that speaks many languages. a big,
mixed and harmonious family, open and welcoming of
its prodigal and adoptive children. It’s a neighbourhood
built upon the universal language of water and China
ink, a lust for life coursing through every single one of its
porous veins, inviting you to drink it all in.
our here and now introduces us to pagan ventrilo-
quists who attempt to keep the language of brick and
mortar alive through the fleeting voice of spray paint.

are more than mere adornment; they tell stories of the
days and nights at joints like the hotel molinos. Like the

headquarters of the neighbourhood denizens, a refuge
for artists and locals called Candela. “this neighbour-

here time stands still with every sip of vermouth, and life
playfully traces its course over pieces of toast. el niño’s
paintings are the vegetarian menu at restaurants like

Conchi’s, the flagship of neighbourhood bakeries.
the Campo del Príncipe is an urban lung of leafy
hollows, built by royal commission and watched over by
the fearless statue of the Cristo de los favores. It is a
stately esplanade at the foot of the alhambra with views
onto the rodríguez acosta foundation, traditional home
to visual artists receiving its grants. and it is always full
of regulars like “el fugitivo”, an inoffocial valet who tells
us that his livelihood is threatened as the area’s car
parks are being turned into “blue zones”; or the eternal
amelía, who offers us her photos, keepsakes from her
past as a flamenco dancer. this is the quarter’s most
culinary square, replete with row upon row of outdoor

“but let’s have a coffee first.” a sense of closeness and
mutual support, so necessary in their trade, is palpable

in 1997 i travelled around germany and France, and only after what i believed to be a veritable trip of intellectual initia-tion, did i arrive in rome. spring had passed,
and the simple and sweltering heat of Italian summers
had begun. one morning I spoke to margarita. maragar-
ita was from turin and I had been introduced to her in a
Vidéothèque in Paris. We had toured the musée d’orsay
together, and I had carried her umbrella on a few occa-
sions, when the weather was undesirable, as we walked
down the rue de rivoli on our way to the cinema.
We had arranged to meet in milan for the weekend and
I remember taking the train at a roma termini full of peo-
ple setting out on holiday. the imposing stazione Cent-
rale di milano, however, was empty. after walking around
for a while I managed to find a hostel. the ambience
– bunk beds and walls adorned with pictures of smiling
mountain walkers – felt a little odd. It was thursday
afternoon. margarita was to arrive from turin on sunday
morning. accepting my fate as a tourist, I headed straight
for the restoration of The Last Supper. But if all the mila-
nese had departed the city in search of sun and sea or
mountain cool, the hoards of Japanese tourists, moving
like robots, and australians, in sandals, Bermuda shorts
and brightly coloured beach shirts, inevitably formed an
interminable queue, anxious to admire Leonardo’s work.
I got bored of waiting and left. Compared to the streets
of florence or rome, not to mention Venice, the streets
of milan seemed stripped, almost industrial, and for that
reason, profoundly Italian. at the same time, almost four
out of five shops were closed, shutters down, and some
even had a little sign saying that the owners, employees
and most probably their customers too, were on holiday.

of course Il Duomo was astounding. I enjoyed it
immensely, like an expensive toy, the simplest way to
worship god. afterwards, almost by chance, I sat down
at a pavement table outside a café. I ordered a granita,
an iced-strawberry drink. the day had been long and I
had no intention of returning to the hostal yet. It felt good
to sit in the blaring sun, and watch, motionless, how the
world passed me by and how the hot afternoon turned
into cool night. I was tempted to tour a few bars, but at
that time of the year not much was happening and I didn’t
find any. so I decided to have an early night.
friday came, and after going to ricordi to buy the
sheet music to Bach’s Concerto for flute and harpsichord
in B minor, and finding a book with pictures of rhinocer-
oses in a very coquette bookshop, I went back to the café
with the crushed-ice drinks. I had one, two, three. always
‘di fragola’. the waiter approached me. he explained that
the ‘granita’ was a sicilian dessert. had I been to sicily?
there, the iced drinks were very different. he was from
naples. he lived in milan, a city he was not fond of, for
work reasons.
on saturday, I ordered the granita again in the street
café. I could see a group of arabs on the corner. they
looked like they were wearing their own kind of uniform:
expensive sports clothes, shiny new trainers and flashy
gold chains around their necks. they laughed and chat-
ted. they were waiting for no-one and yet waiting for
everyone at the same time. I envied them.
on sunday, margarita left me a message at the hostel.
When I spoke to her she explained that she had to post-
pone her arrival for another two days. I didn’t tell her that
I had already bought my ticket to Buenos aires. my trip
was over and I had to go back. I never tried strawberry
granita again, but whenever anyone mentions milan I
think of long sweltering days, in a city empty of people
and the cold, sweet crushed ice, of that welcome break
for any traveller, who although he is not lost, sometimes
feels too far away from himself.
