The Molly Brown House was at a pivotal moment. Several
changes in executive leadership disrupted continuity and focus
while diminishing sources of institutional funding and reducing membership. To turn this situation around and strengthen its
relationships with its community and stakeholders, Historic Denver Inc. (which owns and operates the Molly Brown House
Museum) commissioned Engaging Places to conduct a community
engagement assessment.
Following a framework developed by the American Alliance of
Museums, Engaging Places developed a series of recommendations to improve community engagement and
enhance the visitor experience. We based these on an analysis of
visitation and support, financial reports, staff and board interviews, and an evaluation of the tours, events, site, and
neighborhood. As a result, the Molly Brown House immediately addressed the several obstacles that discouraged visitation,
including directions and parking; identified target audiences that
provide opportunities for growth and income; and gained the confidence to launch a major capital campaign. “You provided
invaluable feedback which has indeed already affected change here at the museum,” director Andrea Malcomb said a year later.
“We are excited to be taking the next steps in our evolution as a
relevant and engaging historic house museum ready for the next generation of learners.”
Engaging Places identified opportunities for engaging supporters of the Molly Brown House in the greater Denver region using a geographical information system.
