Thankful. Appreciative. Grateful. These three words are very powerful as they embody the meaning of the season upon which we are about to enter. Let me take this opportunity to share my appreciation for all you do to make Molloy so different from other colleges. Your ongoing support for those most in need and the manner in which you interact with everyone on campus are just two of the ways in which we communicate our mission to the outside world. As part of our commitment to the basic principles upon which the College was found- ed, I ask that you continue to help transform the lives of everyone you come in contact with and continue to be mindful and deliberate in your actions of respect, thought- fulness, and compassion. Together, we are achieving great things and are setting the tone for others to follow. Thank you, again, for all you do to make Molloy the special place it is. Happy Thanksgiving.

As part of our commitment to the basic principles upon which the College was found-ed, I ask that you continue to help transform the lives of everyone you come in contact with and continue to be mindful and deliberate in your actions of respect, thought-fulness, and compassion. Together, we are achieving great things and are setting the tone for others to follow.

Thank you, again, for all you do to make Molloy the special place it is.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Drew Bogner, Ph.D.President

Thanksgiving Quotes

By S. Dorothy Fitzgibbons, O.P., Ed.D., Vice President for Mission

Hopefully, you have seen Dr. Maureen Carey’s representation of the four pillars of Dominican life as the four seasons. In the upper left –hand quadrant the season of autumn visualizes Community through the varieties of leaves in size, color and shape. We come together many times in the fall. We welcome new members, we celebrate our diversity, and we accept the challenge of giving personal attention during this period of growth at the college.

At the opening Com-munity Day in September, with the theme of “empow-erment through education” S. Margaret Ormond, O.P., told the history of the Do-minican friars who were sent from Spain to the Ameri-cas in 1510. Their story of standing up and preaching with one voice on behalf of the human rights of indig-enous people enslaved by the Spanish landowners is a powerful one. Sister Marga-ret challenged us to reflect on 500 years from now: Will They remember the Fire of our Preaching and Teaching? We then heard of the won-derful community service ex-periences in which our stu-dents are engaged on and off campus.

We are more than half-way through the semester. What do we preach and teach to one another on a daily basis? How do our stu-dents view us in our interac-tions with them and with one another? Do we give evi-dence that Community is a value for us? What do our Al-ums remember most about

Molloy five, twenty-five, or fifty-five years later? What does Community mean to us in the 21st century?

In his book Community – The Structure of Belonging, Peter Block writes that “the social fabric of community is formed from an expanding shared sense of belonging. It is shaped by the idea that only when we are connected and care for the well-being of the whole that a civil and democratic society is created.” he continues, “The key to creating or transforming community is to see the power of being with others.

How are we going to be when we gather together?”

As we go through the transforma-tive season of autumn and reflect on the meaning of Thanksgiving, a time of grati-tude and blessing, I invite us to be aware of our own giftedness and the uniqueness of every person, to reach out to “the oth-er” by being inclusive, to be committed to the common good, and to engage in com-munity building that is transformative. A Blessed Thanksgiving to all!

Public Square, Residential Housing Update

FOCUS ON MiSSiON

We continue to make progress on both the Public Square (the new student center/theatre) and the new residence hall. The ex-ternal structures are close to completion, and the exterior walls are beginning to take shape. over the next few weeks, you will see a lot of brick/masonry work, as well as the installation of win-dows. Both buildings are scheduled to be completed before the 2011-12 school year. Pictured here is the residence hall.

Rooted in Community

(as of Oct. 2010)

You may see some members of the Public Safety team on bicycles. We currently have two bikes in operation and three officers that are trained to use them, with two more bikes expected for the spring. The new Public Safety tools are designed to give the officers easier access to students and staff, while also making for improved navigation through the construction site. Additionally, the bicycles are also environmentally friendly! Pictured here are: Thomas Havey, Dennis Hannon, and Daniel Haggerty.
