Scaffolding has been installed throughout 90% of the site, in preparation for the concrete pour of the second floor. In addition, all of the reinforcing rods have been placed in forming the perimeter support beams on the south, southeast, and southwest quadrants. The flooring formwork and column forming have been completed for the southwest quadrant of the second floor. The concrete is being poured for the second floor, together with the perimeter beams along the southeast quadrant. Concurrently, the remainder of the formwork is in place for the southwest quadrant second floor concrete pour, which was expected during the week of November 4 th . Approximately 200 metres of concrete will be poured into the southeast quadrant of the second floor. The concrete pour of the southeast quadrant was completed on November 4 th . The required electrical conduit embedded in the floor reinforcing rod has been completed for the concrete pour. All required mechanical preparations for the concrete pour have been completed. shared Silver with Mark Andrews, a recent Radio graduate, for their commercial for Indigo Bookstores. In the magazine category, Corina Brennan, a 3rd year student, won Gold for her Neutrogena ad. Bronze was awarded to recent graduate, Mike Precious, for his MasterCard ad. For his magazine campaign for Pro-Line, Brent Lehtinen, also a recent graduate, won Silver. 1.3 Two Television students also won Advertising Creative Excellence (ACE) Awards

at the same event. Kathy Dunphy won the Gold Award in the Video Category for her comedy, “Two Eds are Better Than One” and Ryan Ferguson won the silver award in the Video Category for his drama, “Jacob.” [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.4 A successful Business and Applied Arts Orientation and “Welcome Back” was held

in September at the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. Approximately 80 new and returning employees from the Fennell and Brantford Campuses enjoyed the opportunity to revisit colleagues and college practices in a pleasant and innovative learning environment. 1.5 Rick Anderson, Manager, Aboriginal Programs along with Keith Nixon, Dean,

International Education, on September 24, 2002 spent the day with Sue O’Brien, Manager – Office of Regional Initiatives, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, Australia, to discuss institutional partnership possibilities related to Aboriginal programming. 1.6 On September 30, 2002, a small group comprising representatives from Mohawk

College and McMaster University participated in a brief ceremony launching the installation of the time capsule for the Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences. Attendees included from McMaster University: Dr. Raelene Rathbone, Nancy Plews, Anne Kochmanski, John Greb and from Mohawk College: Shelagh Gill, Rosemary Knechtel, Dick Raha and Heide Bell. 1.7 Rosemary Knechtel was invited to participate on the review team of the Advanced

1.8 Mohawk College participated in the month long Health Research Awareness celebrations in Hamilton in October in collaboration with Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph's Healthcare, St. Peter's Hospital and McMaster University. Mary Guise, Professor, BScN Nursing is the Health Sciences representative on the Planning Committee. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.9 Nursing Research Day was co-hosted on October 9, 2002 by Mohawk, McMaster,

Conestoga College and the Hamilton-Wentworth VON. The theme was "Bridging the Gap between Nursing Worklife and Technology", and was held at the Hamilton Convention Centre. The day was well attended by nursing faculty, Chair, Marilyn Bieksa and Dean, Rosemary Knechtel who welcomed delegates and brought greetings on behalf of Mohawk. 1.10 Nancy Matthew-Maich, Professor, BScN Nursing and Carrie Mines, Professor

/Coordinator Level 1 BScN Nursing represented Mohawk College on a Panel at the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario International Conference on October 24 and 25 “Embracing the Future: Educating Tomorrow’s Nurses”. They discussed Mohawk faculties experience with the Faculty Development program preparation for moving into the BScN program. The presentation was on the Faculty Development Program and was entitled “Faculty Development – The Essence of Curriculum Change”. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

1.11 On October 23rd, 2002 the Together For Families Resource Centre had its official

grand opening at the Fennell Campus. The Together For Families Resource Centre is housed in the former Fennell campus daycare and was created through a partnership between Mohawk College, Affiliated Services for Children and Youth (ASCY), Today’s Family and the provincial government who provided funding through the Early Years Challenge Fund. The Together For Families Resource Centre is providing play-based programming for children at no cost to families. This centre also provides Early Childhood Education students with the opportunity to benefit from on-site observation of children as well as observation opportunities through a video hookup to the classroom next door. The development of this resource centre is a very unique initiative and one that is exciting for everyone involved. There have been inquiries from groups across the province interested in Mohawk College's unique approach to integrating academic planning in early childhood education with the resource needs of parents in the community. 1.12 In October, representatives from institutions in Western India came to Mohawk

College on a study tour organized by the Canada-India Institute Linkage Program (CIILP) and the Association for Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). The purpose of the visit was to explore opportunities to partner with Canadian institutions and to see how we organize the contract training and community linkage functions. As part of an international collaboration with CIILP and ACCC, we hope to establish international partnerships with education institutions for student recruitment that will net us 20 new international students starting in January 2004. LEARNER AND CLIENT FOCUS 2.1 The wireless network for the Business 2 Business pilot project course development

and the Banner Project are in place and operational. Wireless access points (802.11a 54 Mbps), security and authentication have been installed in rooms A013 (Banner) and E338 (B2B project). Users are required to log on to the wireless network before being able to access the College backbone. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration.]

2.2 The Technical Support Department completed a number of installations during the

month of October. Special Needs programs (Dragon Naturally Speaking and Inspiration 7 with TextHelp Read & Write) were required by Disability Services for their microcomputers in the Fennell LRC. Omron CX Programmer was installed in micro lab E03 for the Industrial and Mechanical Faculty. Insight 5.5 software (Clay & Glaze Theory) was installed in the Brantford Open Access. MicroBBM4, Micro TV, Airwave and SalesPro are Advertising software programs and were installed in the Media Studies labs in F108. Aperture Version 7 and MicroStation 8 were installed for the Building and Construction Sciences Department. In the AutoCAD, Civil & Survey components were installed. 2.3 Additional paid printing card readers and printers were installed in the Stoney Creek

Open Access, the Reading & Writing Clinic in Room J130 at the Fennell Campus, and in Microcomputer Lab A120. This will allow additional access to student printing in areas where printing had not been available, and in the case of Room A120, it will alleviate print congestion in labs that have 50 microcomputer workstations. 2.4 The Technical Support Group has been setting up a test environment with Sun

Microsystems’ Sun Ray and Thin Client architecture. The Technical Support Group is interested in testing the thin client environment with the SCT Banner installation team. This would include Web access to applications that have been created. The group will also begin testing a College student environment with this architecture, which would include access to the Internet (as in a cyber café type setting), as well as a test of Sun’s Star Office, which is comparable to Microsoft Office. Four Sun Appliances and one server will be used in this test: all systems are located in the Computer Room. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration.

2.5 COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Community Economic Development staff collaborated with Continuing Education, Health Sciences on a proposal to offer Advanced Care Paramedic Training to City of Hamilton employees. As part of the bidding process, College representatives made a presentation to City of Hamilton officials. The results of this meeting were very positive. Mohawk College is being considered as the trainer of choice for this program. Ongoing negotiations will hopefully result in the program being offered as early as January 2003. 2.6 Jim Vanderveken, Director, attended the Innovations in Workplace Skills and

Learning National Best Practices Workshop in Calgary from September 29 to October 1. This conference was co-hosted by Bow Valley College, Human Resources Development Canada, and the Conference Board of Canada. The conference represented an excellent opportunity for information exchange and policy development relative to workplace learning recognition and essential skills, This pan-Canadian forum afforded participants, representing educators, sector councils, private industry, non-governmental agencies and government departments to share views on these emerging priorities for Canada’s workforce. 2.7 Staff in the Business Development Division participated in the annual Industry

Education Council Partners Breakfast, held at LIUNA Gardens, on October 16. This is a premier event attracting well over 500 representatives from industry, education, community, government and the media. This year’s keynote speaker was Mike Jaycock who spoke about the new branding campaign launched by the City of Hamilton. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.8 Community Economic Development staff attended the launch of the Skilled

Trades Awareness Week held at the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport on Monday, October 28. This week-long event is coordinated by the Industry Education Council to raise awareness of the importance of trades occupations to the economic vitality of the City. 2.9 Student and Community Services staff attended the annual Mayor’s Breakfast at the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, October 29. His Worship Mayor Robert Wade spoke about the tremendous potential of Hamilton in economic, social and life quality terms. 2.10 Staff from the Community Economic Development Department and the Canadian

Steel Trade and Employment Congress (CSTEC) participated in the 3 day Career and Education Fair at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from October 4 to 6. This event brought in over 7500 students and parents eager to find out more information about post-secondary programs and training opportunities. 2.11 Staff from the Return to Work Services Program participated in JobsFest at the

Hamilton Convention Centre on September 26. This annual community event gives job-seekers the opportunity to meet with a number of hiring employers one-on-one to learn more about community resources. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.12 MEDICAL SERVICES DIVISION

There have been two flu clinics held and 410 employees or students have been immunized. There are six more clinics to be held. Clinics have been arranged at Fennell, IAHS, Brantford and Stoney Creek Campuses. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.13 Medical Services will be hiring students to work with the Responsible Gambling

Council. These students will be responsible for staffing the display booth, encouraging students to take part in a contest, share information on the topic of gambling and provide daily give-aways. Salaries will be paid for by the Ontario Gambling Council. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.14 STUDENT DEVELOPMENT DIVISION

Counsellors noted a prevalence of student personal issues such as marital problems, confidence, bereavement, trauma and general stress/anxiety related to heavy academic and family demands. It was noted that there seem to be many students having difficulty balancing school, home and work priorities. Some students have as many as three part-time jobs. Financial concerns are a real source of stress and advisors in Financial Aid continue to work with the counsellors to find solutions for individuals with serious financial need. Fortino’s

gift certificates are relied upon when students are waiting for financial aid. Both current and prospective students are asking for assistance with career and educational planning, and in applying for programs for both January and September 2003. 2.15 With the increase in enrollment at the Stoney Creek Campus due to the thirteen

post-secondary programs presently offered, a counsellor is now available two days per week (effective October 21) to manage student issues and the increase in community inquiries. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.16 Effective October 21, the counsellor complement has also been increased at the

IAHS to one full-time and one part-time (2 days/week) counsellor. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.17 Approximately 70 peer tutors have been hired to date and approximately 200

students have registered for tutoring. An article entitled “Worried About Your Grades?” was run in the Satellite on October 24 to promote the Peer Tutor Program.

2.18 Five tutors have been hired to date for the Aboriginal Peer Tutor Program at the

Brantford Campus, who are available on a drop-in basis to students at specific scheduled times. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.19 DISABILITY SERVICES

Disability Services has seen an unprecedented increase in students. During the fiscal period ending September 2002, the total number of students seen in Disability Services amounted to 754, compared with 498, a 51% increase over the same period last year. It is interesting to note that these students generated 2,913 contacts, including but not limited to interaction with faculty, examination accommodations, follow-up with physicians and interactions with peer helpers. The complexity of student needs is also rising, with a significant increase in those with mental health conditions. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.20 Virginia Nusca and Sylvia Laidman are coordinating a province-wide response to

the Ontario Human Rights Commission on behalf of the College Committee on Disability Services. They will be moderating a discussion on this issue with the Chair of OHRC, Keith Norton, at the CCDI meeting on November 5. [Submitted by

Committee on Disability Issues (CCD), Virginia Nusca is moderating a Learning Disabilities Information Session at the CCDI AGM in Toronto. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

2.22 From the beginning of September until the date of this report, 19 students have

been referred for psycho-educational assistance through Disability Services. This service is invaluable to students and helps them to access services they might otherwise not be eligible for without the appropriate documentation. 2.23 As part of the College's retention strategy and to increase the options available to

our students, the General Arts & Science (GAS) Program will now give credit for up to 10 courses to students wishing to transfer from other post secondary programs. These courses will be accepted in place of the options listed in the new Program of Study. This should give students an incentive not to drop courses or withdraw from the College but to remain and either, complete a GAS Diploma or re-assess their goals and enter another Mohawk Program. The program will also allow Continuing Education students to use up to 10 courses toward a GAS Certificate (1 year) or Diploma (2 year). Students with a GAS Diploma can use the articulation agreements with universities to gain up to a year's credit towards a Degree. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

2.24 Aboriginal Students attended a Pizza Welcoming Social at the Brantford Campus on

STRATEGIC ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT 3.1 Leo Barsony, International Education, had a successful recruitment trip to China in

October. Meetings were conducted with recruitment representatives and seminars were held for potential students and their parents. The most popular requests continue to be for the business and computer science technology programs. Considerable interest was generated related to the Mohawk College/Laurier University degree transfer programs. [Submitted by Shelagh Gill, Vice President, Academic.]

3.2 Mohawk College hosted three delegations from China over the summer. Currently,

there are 430 students enrolled in the “2 + 1” program in China. The students will have the opportunity to apply for Canadian visas and the successful students will come to Mohawk College to study for twelve months in the Business Administration program. PERFORMANCE RECOGNITION 4.1 CONTINUING EDUCATION

The Red Trillium Awards Presentations were made at Hamilton City Hall on Wednesday, October 23. Two Mohawk College Landscape Design Certificate students, Lynn Ann Kellner and Tracy Pilcher, were recipients of $200 awards for excellence in their program areas. Sherry Hayes, our Landscape with Colour Instructor, was the recipient of a Red Trillium Award (highest honour). Donna McMillan, Chair, and Jim Lounsbery, Program Manager, represented Mohawk at the presentation and reception. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services.]

4.2 The Faculty of Continuing Education assisted with fundraising for the John

4.5 STUDENT LIFE

Kelvin Deacon, Chartwells District Manager, was selected as the winner of the 2002 Penta Award. 4.6 At the 2002 Annual Tourism Awards on October 3rd Mohawk College’s Event

Planning Techniques program was awarded the “Commitment of Training” award. This award is presented to a business, event, or attraction that demonstrates a

5.3 Anthony D’Alessandro attended a Human Rights Resource Group meeting. 5.5 MARKETING & PUBLIC RELATIONS

The Marketing & Public Relations Department and Student Services Department hosted a community relations meeting at the College on October 29 in the Student Residence. The meeting was held to allow residents the opportunity to meet with College officials and discuss issues around student activities, the construction of the X-Centre, the impact around the College caused by the 2003 World Cycling Championships, and other neighbourhood concerns. 5.7 The Marketing & Public Relations Department launched the College’s 2003-2004 student recruitment campaign on October 15. The $120,000 campaign includes extensive newspaper advertising from October 15 to the end of January 2003, bus-shelter posters and a billboard, radio advertising in a variety of markets, as well as a range of promotional materials, brochures and in-school marketing. seminar on Canada Customs "Administrative Monetary Penalty System" (AMPS). AMPS was initiated in 2000 by Canada Customs when they transferred responsibility for the proper completion of customs documentation to the importer/exporter in order to provide faster border clearance. As of October 7, 2002, monetary penalties will now be imposed on importers or exporters who have errors or omissions detected on their customs documentation. 6.2 Gail Purmalis, Charlene Duggan and Veronica DeSchryver attended the annual two-

6.7 STUDENT DEVELOPMENT The two new full-time staff hired in August to support students with learning disabilities (Learning Strategic and Assistive Technologist) continue to develop their roles and responsibilities. The Learning Strategist is now working one day per week at Brantford, and is running a spelling workshop program to assist students in Law and Security/Police Foundations. Two temporary computers have been installed in Room A of the library and some adaptive technology has been installed as well. Financial Planning Seminars: The “Long Term Care and Critical Illness” workshop was cancelled due to low numbers. It will be offered in January 2003. 6.11 Student Survey On Instruction:

The Student Survey on Instruction for faculty members was completed on October 25, 2002. Presently, all of the surveys are being processed and the results will be returned to the faculty to share with their classes before the completion of the fall semester. 6.12 Computer Coach Program:

The Computer Coach Program successfully completed the first run on Professional Development workshops. Fifty-four (54) Mohawk faculty, administrative and support staff members signed up to take advantage of the program offerings. The most popular workshops were a new, first-time presentation of Dreamweaver MX Web Page developer (10 participants) and, as usual, MS PowerPoint (10 participants). FINANCIAL VIABILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY 7.1 Several staff members from the Controller Division and the Purchasing & Financial

7.2 Staff members from the Controller Division and the Purchasing & Financial Planning

Division attended Banner finance training sessions for three days on the development of the Chart of Accounts. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration.]

7.3 A Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency auditor is conducting a review of the

College’s GST rebates and input tax credits claimed since 1999. This review is expected to continue until the end of this calendar year. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration.]

7.4 The Helpdesk handled a total of 555 calls during the month of October. [Submitted by

Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration.] 7.5 Ron Baskin prepared the October 2002 SuperBuild Project Status Report. The

project status report on the Centre for Information Technology (X-Centre) is a Ministry requirement for SuperBuild projects. Data is provided and updated under the categories of: Status, Funding, Cost and Space. [Submitted by Dick Raha, Vice President, Finance & Administration.]

7.6 John Guilfoyle, Director of Colleges Services, and Erin Braidford, Financial & Systems Analyst, prepared the annual Women’s Campus Safety Funding Report for submission to the Ministry. Grants received by the College are used to fund initiatives to improve facilities and purchase equipment, such as lighting, security equipment; educate staff and students about women’s safety issues; and support programs that address the safety and security needs of women workers and students. 7.7 As Chair of the Brantford Campus Student Lounge Design Team, Anthony D’Alessandro met with the team and the architect to discuss ideas and develop the space concept. The Design Team met with the architect on November 1st to finalize the design phase of the project. 7.8 All 2003/2004 Major Project Proposals were received by College Planning during the week of October 21st. The Major Projects Team, consisting of all Administrative Managers and chaired by Anthony D’Alessandro, will review all Major Projects for consistency and accuracy. Marty Wilson, Assistant Director, Information Technology, will prepare a priority list of IT requests for MEC’s consideration in the Budget Plan. 7.9 COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

On October 1, Community Economic Development received a twelve month Employment Assistance Service contract from Human Resources Development Canada to continue servicing the needs of the unemployed in the Brantford community. This on-going initiative assists clients in identifying realistic and achievable employment goals by providing them with a personalized Return to Work Action plan and referrals to the appropriate community resources. 7.10 The Community Economic Development/Access Department, in cooperation with

Ontario Works Brant and supported by MTCU delivered the first of three, six-week pilot projects to assist Ontario Works’ participants to assess and determine their level of literacy and numeracy skills in preparation for future job opportunities. 7.11 On October 4, Community Economic Development hosted the first Mohawk

College Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) program graduation. Seventeen Industrial Electrician WIST graduates completed the forty-two week program that included academic upgrading, basic level 1 apprenticeship training and an eight week work experience component. A highlight at the event was a letter of recognition to the graduates from the Honourable Dianne Cunningham, Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, presented at the ceremony by Sandra Smith, partnership Development specialist with the Ontario Women’s Directorate. 7.13 ADVANCEMENT

SHAPING THE FUTURE CAMPAIGN SUCCESS REPORT Campaign Steering Committee members met with several prominent community leaders and potential pacesetting campaign benefactors. A number of individuals have agreed to serve as senior campaign volunteers, including former Mohawk President Keith McIntyre. The full Campaign senior volunteer team will be announced shortly. 7.14 The RFP to secure a lead IT partner has been drafted and is being refined for

issue in November to a short-list of prequalified companies including Dell, Hewlett Packard, Bell Canada, Cisco, IBM, SUN Microsystems and others. High-level meetings were held with a world-leading multi-national corporation within the medical imaging/energy/process automation sector interested in partnering at the leadership level. The Committee is collaborating with regional Scotiabank leaders on developing a major funding proposal. Similar discussions are scheduled with a prominent local charitable foundation. 7.15 Mohawk College had 260 full-time and 19 part-time international post secondary
