Iraqi Electricity Sector:

• The electricity sector in Iraq requires large investments to fulfill the increasing demand on electrical power.

• The below table shows the expected peak demand for electricity from 2009 to 2015.

• The below table shows the situation of the electricity network for the first five months in 2007 and 2008.

• The required investment is estimated to be $16 Billion US Dollars from the period 2007 – 2010 according to the National Development Strategy issued by the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation and these estimates include government and private investments.

• MoE have plans to increase the production capacity and improve the performance of their transmission and distribution to cover the full demand gradually till 2012 by:

First: Rehabilitation of the existing power plants to produce electric power to their existing access design capacity. This will have a low cost effectiveness as well as short time for

implementation.

Second: Establishment of new production plants (Thermal & Gas) according to the central plan to

cover the entire requirement of electricity power till 2012.
