Module XISample Entries

12014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training - Module XI. This PowerPoint in its entirety is for the exclusive use of New Jersey educators. All other uses of this document are forbidden without written permission from the NJDOE.

This module provides samples of entries that meet the criteria for inclusion in an APA portfolio as well as examples that do not meet all of the scoring rules. Review the sample entries with the PowerPoint Modules and the current Procedures Manual. After each entry, there will be an explanation as to why the entry scored as it did.

Sample Entries The following sample entries meet all of the Universal Scoring Rules and are therefore eligible for scoring ANDall of the individual dimension rules, so there are no zero scores.

Later in this module, youll see some sample entries that have some errors. But first, lets look at some sample entries that do not contain any errors and are therefore scorable. 4th Grade ScienceSample EntryMelissa32014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XI

9-11-14Evidence 1

In this piece of evidence, the student cuts and pastes the corresponding letter to the process on the diagram. When assessing this CPI Link--labeling the steps of the water cycle--evaporation, condensation, precipitation and surface runoff MUST be identified; however, that is only four items. The fifth item can be any of the other processes in the water cycle, such as, in this evidence, storage.

Evidence 2

In the final piece of evidence, the student completes the diagram with the appropriate terms on the SMARTboard. Once completed, the evidence is printed and placed in the portfolio. 2014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XIScience Evidence Index4th Grade Science Entry Entry 3Standard 5.8 Strand B CPI 5.8.4B2Near Link: Label the steps of the water cycle (precipitation, surface runoff, evaporation, condensation)Rubric DimensionScoreEvidenceComplexity3Evidence reflects the skill(s) of the chosen linkLabel stepsTwo distinct activities show evidence of instructionDifferent pictures of cycle; SMARTboard with word bank vs. cut & pastePerformance4 The score of the initial evidence was 0% (which is below 39%)Each item is clearly marked on both pieces of evidence The final evidence does not have a more intrusive prompt than initial evidenceThe score of the final evidence was 100%Independence4Each item is clearly marked on both pieces of evidence The score on the final evidence is 100%.7

Evidence 12014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XI

This is the first piece of evidence. Here, the student is presented with a graphic organizer and must place pictures of various objects under the correct heading: gaseous or terrestrial. Both planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune) and other objects (meteor, asteroid, comet, sun) are included. 1011

This is the final piece of evidence. Here, the student must circle either gaseous or terrestrial for each of the twelve planets and other objects listed to classify. 11122014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XIScience Evidence Index8th Grade Science Entry Entry 4Standard 5.9 Strand B CPI 5.9.8B1Near Link: Classify planets and other objects in our solar system as terrestrial (rocky) or gaseous*Rubric DimensionScoreEvidenceComplexity3Evidence reflects the skill(s) of the chosen linkClassify planets and other objects as terrestrial or gaseous (both planets and other objects are included)Two distinct activities show evidence of instructionPaste pictures into a graphic organizer; circle gaseous or terrestrial Performance4 The score of the initial evidence was 8% (which is below 39%)Each item is clearly marked on both pieces of evidence The final evidence does not have a more intrusive prompt than initial evidenceThe score of the final evidence was 83%Independence4 Each item is clearly marked on both pieces of evidence The score of the final evidence was 100%

Remember that entries containing either of the two Major Flaws as outlined in Module VIII will score a 1 in Complexity.Remember that there are a variety of errors that can cause an entry to score a 0 in Performance and/or Independence, as outlined in Modules IX and X.

Now, lets look at a sample entry that has some errors in specific dimensions and how those errors affect the scoring of the entry. 8th Grade ScienceSample EntryColleen192014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XI

Therefore, the entry receives a zero for all three dimensions.242014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XI

Initial Evidence

This is the first piece of evidence. Think about the scoring rules you learned in previous modules. Do you see any errors here? You may want to look at the final activity as well and compare it with this initial activity. 27282014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XI

Final Evidence

This is the final piece of evidence. How does it compare to the initial activity? Do you notice any errors with either of the activities? 28292014-2015 NJ APA Teacher Training Module XIScience Evidence IndexHigh School Science Entry Entry 3Standard 5.5 Strand A CPI 5.5.12A2Far Link: Identify the structure and function of plant cells*

This entry is unscorable and receives an LA-D The CPI Link includes multiple skills, but each piece of evidence assessed a different skill from the link. USR 8

The link contains two parts: identify the structure AND the function of plant cells.

The first piece of evidence assesses identifying the structure only because each structures name is placed in the diagram from the answer bank.

The second piece of evidence assesses identifying only the function by matching the organelle to its function.

Since the first piece of evidence assesses part of the link and the final piece of evidence assesses a different part of link, this entry is unscorable and receives the LA-D code.

Review the index for information as to why this entry scored as it did, and remember, you do not need to include an evidence index in your students portfolio; it is for training purposes only.
