Module Synopsis This module provides the opportunity for each student to demonstrate the management of independent, self-managed research projects. Students will be encouraged to develop a critical approach to their research material, identifying through primary and secondary sources an appropriate body of material from which to construct arguments and demonstrate academic rigour. They are required to take full charge of their programme of study and become increasingly empowered to investigate, interrogate and challenge as they become more knowledgeable. The requirement to share both process and information with peers and tutors will encourage an increasingly self-critical attitude. The major research project usually generates a dissertation or agreed equivalent outcome. The studio research project may generate an essay, a record of research in support of design, a rationale for design, a design brief on which architectural design can be developed both conceptually and materially or agreed equivalent outcome. Initial investigations provide models of research, logical methodology and evolution which can serve in subsequent design activity, that is, the Comprehensive Design Project. The resulting structure of the design process reflects studio strategy and philosophical position. 3. 2. Module Synopsis

This module provides the opportunity for each student to demonstrate the management ofindependent, self-managed research projects. Students will be encouraged to develop a criticalapproach to their research material, identifying through primary and secondary sources anappropriate body of material from which to construct arguments and demonstrate academic rigour. They are required to take full charge of their programme of study and become increasinglyempowered to investigate, interrogate and challenge as they become more knowledgeable. Therequirement to share both process and information with peers and tutors will encourage anincreasingly self-critical attitude.

The major research project usually generates a dissertation or agreed equivalent outcome.

The studio research project may generate an essay, a record of research in support of design, arationale for design, a design brief on which architectural design can be developed both conceptuallyand materially or agreed equivalent outcome. Initial investigations provide models of research, logicalmethodology and evolution which can serve in subsequent design activity, that is, theComprehensive Design Project. The resulting structure of the design process reflects studio strategyand philosophical position.

3. Outline Syllabus

The intention of the research projects is to broaden research experience and deepen understandingof specific topics. Support is offered through regular group tutorials and a programme of workshopscovering more advanced study skills. The study process is divided into phases, each with course

deadlines to enable the students to keep the research and production on target. The workshops andgroup tutorials include discussions on the following:• Refining the topic/ Formulating research questions and hypotheses• Preparing a research plan and managing an independent study• Literature searching/ information sources/ Identifying primary and secondary data sources• Undertaking surveys, questionnaires and interviews/ Argumentation• Preparing an essay plan/ Writing a synopsis and outline/ Academic writing skills/ Conventions ofscholarship and presentation• Preliminary aspects of social, cultural, political, economical and/or historical contexts developed inthe supportive environment of the studio• Analysis and interpretation to encourage independent thought and activities• Critical evaluation of proposal.

4. Module Learning Outcomes

LO1 Plan and organise an independent study and demonstrate strategies for effectivelymanaging time and resources.

LO2 Develop a contextual and theoretical understanding of the chosen research topic throughselection, documentation and study of appropriate material.

LO3 Develop a focused argument based on analysis and synthesis of primary and secondaryresearch material and evidence.

LO4 Express a personal position or point of view, distinguishing between own assumptions andthose of others.

LO5 Demonstrate a critical response to received information or a critical attitude ininvestigative research.

LO6 Explain the theoretical basis and present strategies for its application to a design project.LO7 Discern potential design possibilities relevant to chosen theme and give examples of

spatial conditions appropriate to the conditions of the brief.LO8 Exhibit, through the editing and production of the final text, a complete understanding of

the conventions and requirements for presentation of research.

5. Learning and Teaching Strategy/Methods

Student-centred independent research and writing, group tutorials and advanced study skillsworkshops.
