Module Synopsis This Module covers the development of architecture, art and design from ancient times through to the present in order to establish a datum for general understanding of creative disciplines. It is composed of three elements: 1) it offers an historical overview in which to study contemporary architecture and design; 2) it contextualises history by examining the geographical and temporal location in which we find ourselves; 3) it explores common themes of methodology and critical awareness. The material presented embraces some of the contradictory ideas in Modernism and is used to illustrate the continuing process of constructing interpretations. Examples of buildings, products, graphics and other relevant material are presented as the focus of certain continuing themes and debates. The Module helps students establish skills in studying, essay writing, using information technology and applying conventions of scholarship. Visual research, analysis and presentation techniques are developed alongside text-based academic techniques. 3. Outline Syllabus Students are introduced to aspects of design in Europe and the Near East in ancient times, classical, medieval and renaissance cultures and the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Aspects of design including landscape, gardens, interiors, furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass, graphics and typography are connected by a central theme of architecture. This introductory Module makes links between synoptic history and the products of architecture and design activity. 4. Module Learning Outcomes

LO2 Evaluate learning styles and skills needs, plan and achieve improved learningperformance, and demonstrate competence in a range of common information technologyapplications.

LO3 Identify examples of contemporary architecture and design and explain their significancein the thematic terms of the course.

LO4 Work effectively in a group to plan, prepare and deliver an assignment.LO5 Structure an essay to present a proposal, discuss the case for and against, and draw a

conclusion using relevant information retrieved from a variety of sources, adhering to theconventions of scholarship as taught.
