Course Description
The design of this module includes advancing the student's
knowledge and understanding about the engineering
performance of concrete technology. This module also aims to
introduce the term of sustainability of concrete as
constructional material. Furthermore, the module tackles
ecological impact of constructional materials, in particular
concrete, on the environment and the life of mankind. The
module will also enrich the student understanding about some
modern types of concrete and practices aimed for sustainable
concrete/construction. The topics of this module includes :
Rheological behaviour, mechanical performance and durability
aspects of self-compacted concrete, Fracture energy of fiber
reinforced concrete, Behaviour and predicting models of free
shrinkage of FRC, Geo-polymer concrete as a modern concrete,
Sustainable Development in Concrete Production, Industrial
Waste Aggregates, Construction and Demolition Waste
Aggregates. The module will be delivered via lectures,
presentations and tutorials.
Course objectives
The main objectives of this module are: - Enriching student’s understanding about modern
concrete (composition and performance) - Advancing student’s understanding about sustainable
development of concrete. - Involving students in presenting reports and involving
them in group discussion. - To develop skills in analysis of literature, laboratory
testing, and paper writing about selected topic of concrete technology.
Student's obligation
To pass this module the students should attend all lectures and complete all tests, exams, review reports and assignments.

Specific learning outcome:
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
1. Identify innovation in concrete constituents (components of SCC, RCC, FRC and geo-polymer concrete).
2. Recognize engineering behavior of SCC, RCC, FRC and geo-polymer concrete.
3. Determine the fracture energy of FRC. 4. Comprehend concepts of sustainability of concrete 5. Analyze the performance of concrete incorporating
aggregate from different waste streams. 6. Compare different assessment tools of restrained
shrinkage of concrete. 7. Write a review paper on a specific topic in modern
concrete technology.
