Using surveys

Introduction/description

Surveys can be created by teachers to collect responses from their learners. The results can be analysed individually and in a graphical summary. A variety of different question types can be used to make the process of responding easier and more effective.

Learners can also create surveys in year, subject and class sites.

Task

• Create a survey in the class site.

• Respond to a survey.

• View a graphical representation of the responses.

• Can you export your results to a spreadsheet?

Some ideas for use in the classroom

• Collect and record data from class members, e.g. healthy eating habits, opinions on a particular issue, etc.

• Check learners’ understanding of a unit of work/assessment for learning.

• Learner voice.

• Use the survey as a questionnaire during a fieldwork exercise, making use of mobile devices.

• Individual investigation – primary research for the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Creating and responding to a survey

Give your survey a title and click Create.

Navigate to the site you would like to add your survey to – this is likely to be your class or subject site.

Click the Survey button on the toolbar.

On the right hand side of the page (under ‘Other surveys’) click + Add new survey. If you do not see this option then you do not have sufficient permissions to add a survey on this site. You will need to check these with your site administrator.

To add questions, click on your survey. It will be in the list of Other surveys.

Click the drop-down menu under Settings and choose Add Questions.

Type in your first question.

Select the type of response that will be available to the respondents. There are many question types to choose from and many of them have further options. It is really down to the type of survey as to what style of questions that you choose.

It is recommended that the Require a response to this question is set to Yes.

This will force users to answer the question before they can submit all their responses.

Click Next Question and repeat the previous steps until you have finished your questions. Click Finish.

In order for yourself or other users to respond to the survey, navigate back to the correct survey and click Respond to this Survey.

Answer the questions using the appropriate method and then click Finish.

Analysing your survey responses

There are three ways in which you can analyse the responses to any survey you have created:

• view a graphical summary of responses• review an individuals response• export the survey results to Excel.

To show a graphical representation of your survey, navigate to where you created your survey and click on it. In this example the ‘Planets’ survey.

This will bring up a new page where you can see your results as a bar chart. Scroll down to see all of the questions with the number and percentage of answers for each question.

A second way to view your results is to view the individual responses from each user.

Navigate back to the main page of your survey and click on Show all responses.

This will bring up a page where a list of all the responses will be shown. Click on View Response to see an individual’s answers to the survey.

Here you will see that user’s responses to the questions you have set.

A final way of analysing the responses to your survey, is to export them to Microsoft Excel.

To do this navigate back to the main page of your survey.

Under the Actions drop-down menu, click on Export to Spreadsheet.

You can now use Microsoft Excel to further analyse, filter and sort the responses to your survey.
