SPE-548 Personal Reflection

The highlights during my Session B Student Teaching Process were very enlightening.

Being able to interact and communicate with the students was a great enjoyment, because I was

able to develop a student teacher/student working relationship with them. The process helped me

to gain an understanding to my students learning needs, style, and mindset toward academic

learning. During the process of Session B Student Teaching, I personally enjoyed teaching small

groups of diverse learners, who needed extreme help in the areas of English writing, reading, and

understanding the instructional content. Two of my diverse learners were very far behind in their

reading and writing skills, but when they gained that trust in me after the first week and saw that

I was there to help them, progression started being made.

Teaching them how to write an introduction (hook, thesis, supporting detail), and

conclusion, has been exciting. I consistently assisted them in reading novels and analyzing the

literature within a group. The greatest challenges I experienced during Session B, was trying to

get my diverse learners to understand the instruction.

During my Session B Student Teaching Process, I have learned how to become a

complete teacher. I know that I can manage a classroom and grasp the attention of my students. I

now know how to write an Individual Education Plan (IEP) effectively. I plan to get a job with

the Chicago Public Schools system and continue working with diverse learners. I plan to

continue helping them develop their English, reading, and writing skills, as well as helping them

to understand instructional content. I have learned how to effectively develop lesson plans that

meet the Illinois Common Core Learning Standards and meet the student’s learning needs at the

same time. I have learned to provide educational instruction that accommodates the students’

learning style as well.

Teaching students with diverse learning needs peaks my interest and drives me to want to

become a teacher more. The process of assisting and exceling their academic learning process is

a challenge that I accept and want to become successful with. I have taken on this challenge

because during the 4th grade I too was a diverse learner. Through hard work and dedication to my

academics, I became a regular education student after the fifth grade and continued to progress

forward from there on as years passed. I now have this personal connection with diverse learners,

because I was them once upon a time in my life. I want to help them mainstream into regular

education like someone helped me to do so in my time of education. In doing so, I want to fully

be prepared to teach and meet their learning needs. To meet the needs of students from all

backgrounds it is said that you must learn a broad array of research-based strategies that support

diverse modes of learning and build on what the students already know and do (Allison, Rehm

2007).
