WHAT IS READING?
Farris, Fuhler and Walther state, “Reading comprehension is the process ofunderstanding the message that the author is trying to convey very simply,it is making meaning from the text at hand”.
Reading is an interaction between the reader and the readingmaterial, indirectly the author interacts with the reader and he /she is hoped readers could understand what he/she tells about.
Various Ways or Strategies in Reading Comprehension
• Skimmingquickly running one’s eyes over a text to get gist of it
• Scanningquickly going through a text to find a particular piece ofinformation
• Extensive readingreading a longer texts, usually for one’s own pleasure
• Intensive readingreading shorter texts, to extract specific information
There Are General Strategies to Face Some Questions in ReadingComprehension:
Be familiar with all directions.
Do not waste your time to read in detail.
Do not worry about the topic that unfamiliar with you.
You have to answer all questions and do not leave it blank.
There are some strategies to face reading comprehension questions. Some of them are:
• Skim the reading passage to determine the main idea and theoverall organization of ideas in the passage.
• Look ahead at the questions to determine what types ofquestions you must answer.
• Find the section of the passage that deals with each question.• Read the part of the passage that contains the answer
carefully.• Choose the best answer to each question from the four
choices listed in your test book.

How to identify question• What is the topic of the passage?• What is the subject of the passage?• What is the main idea of the passage?• What is the author’s main point in the passage?• With what is the author primarily concerned?• Which of the following would be the best title?
Where to find the answer • The answer to this type question can generally be
determined by looking at the first sentence of each paragraph.
How to answer the question • Read the first line of each paragraph.• Look for a common theme or idea in the first line. • Pass your eyes quickly over the rest of the passage to check
that you really have found the topic sentence(s).• Eliminate any definitely wrong answers and choose the best
answer from the remaining choices.
The following is the key information that you should remember when you have to organize ideas:
How to identify the question• How is the information in the passage organized?• How is the information in the second paragraph related to the information
in the first paragraph?Where to find the answer • The answer to this type of question can generally be determined by looking
at the first sentence of the appropriate paragraphs. How to answer the question • Read the first line of each paragraph• Look for words that show the relationship between the paragraph• Choose the answer that the best expresses the relationship
