Introduction:

As per course requirement, we have to design some product which will be unique and new, a

product that is already not manufactured or not in operation in Pakistan industry. Product must

be useful for all people or some people of the market. It can be used for decorating purposes like

decoration pieces, kitchen item or any item that can ease or reduce the burden of a person or

feels pleasant to people.

My Choice of Product:

I am planning to make some unique product that would be useful for people, anything that would

reduce the human effort for example a cellphone that has make the life easy of all people.

So after thinking much about different types of product researching from internet and asking

from different colleagues and friends I have decided that I would design a wheelchair, actually a

modified wheelchair. That wheelchair would ot be a simple wheelchair on which a person can sit

and move around with the help of arm power. With the help of that modified wheelchair a

handicap person can also climb up stairs and cone down from stairs. I will elaborate my research

in this report.

Current Problems:

With Paralyzed People:

As we know that it is very difficult to take care of any paralyzed person who can’t walk, they are

all dependent on others to move from one room to another room. There are some wheelchairs

with which they can move or drive themselves with their hand and body power. Science has

researched on it and has launched a charged wheelchair with which paralyzed people can move

themselves with just a power of its finger. They can push a button and drive forward, backward

left and right.

Despite of all these modification in old wheelchair there is still a problem which I see in these

that, paralyzed people cannot climb stairs and come down from the stairs with the help of two

more persons. It is only possible when two or more people climb paralyzed person’s chair and

help him go up or downward , which seems a big problem to me for these paralyzed people and

for relatives or family members of that person.

Market analysis:

The latest data for the year 2012 regarding Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) have been given in

one of the book. The disability rate has been increased up to 2.65% as compared 2.54 % in

1998.With the projection of district wise data of PWDs as of today show that more than 5 million

people fall in this category in Pakistan. There are some other scattered and partial surveys

available on disability that shows the disability rates are higher up to 10.0% or more in Pakistan.

The districts having maximum disability rates within respective province are: Chakwal (7.74%)

& Jhang (7.20%) in Punjab, Karachi East (10.31%) & Dadu (5.57%) in Sindh, Malakand (7.6%)

& Tank (4.1%) in KPK and Awaran (9.73%) & Kharan (8.67%) in Balochistan.

So far we have seen that there is nothing much done our government for these people at a large

scale except providing some government hospitals with wheelchairs. Due to which these rates

have been increasing every year.

In Pakistan market, still there are no automatic wheelchairs available. We only find simple chairs

here for convenience of people. It costs around 2,500 to 10,000 rupees per chair to people. The

reason that we don’t find any modified or modern wheelchairs here is may be it is because of the

poverty rate of people that they can’t afford it don’t demand for it or it is because of that they are

extraordinarily expensive.

My Idea:

As problem discussed above, I’m planning to manufacture a wheelchair with which any

handicapped person can go upstairs and downstairs with the help of a single person or a

paralyzed/Handicapped person can go without help of any other person.

There is a product in the market to which we can use to lift weighted products from one floor to

another. It is known as “LIFTKAR”.

Page 7: Modified Wheelchair

This works on this mechanics that it has four tires, two are very small and other two wheels are

big in size.

Page 8: Modified Wheelchair

I have got an idea; I have decided that we can use this product with wheelchair. With the help of

this, a single person can move a handicapped person downward and upward on stairs.

My Second Idea:

I also have an idea for those people who live on their own. If we use road wheels/chain wheels

then a person can move on stairs without any assistance.

The photo given below is a machine used for carrying weighted items such as bags and machines

on stairs. It has two pressure pumps on it with which help a person can bend its seat on either

side.

We can use this machine with a wheelchair. We can fix it under wheelchair and with this a

person can move on a plain floor on its wheels and when it need to climb on the stairs A person

only have to switch its machine option from ground to elevation. And its tires will automatically

move upward and then its road wheels/chain wheel will start running.

Page 11: Modified Wheelchair

This wheelchair will have this kind of system on it with which a person can select its progrems,

be alert with its remaining battery, angle of elevation, weight putted on this machine.

Final Product would be like:

Powers the system up or down with high friction track to ensure contact with the floor over each

stair. Can be used on turn-back stairs with a flat intermediate landing.

Battery powered:

Can ascend 23 floors on one charge, cordless system with charge indicator.

Other standard features:

Two-piece design disassembles for easy transport, slope indicator, battery charge indicator.

Safety features:

Manual emergency device permits safe descent in case of a dead battery, keyed operation

restricts use to authorized operators, user safety belt, emergency stop button.
