Air-insulated medium-voltage switchgear – cleverly switched, local added valuePeace of mind, saves lives, increases productivity, saves money

Answers for energy.

Page 25: Modern_Construction_Catalogs[1].2215649

Experience and quality for maximum system safety

The industrialized world of today is characterized by a rising energy demand and growing environmental consciousness con-currently with an increasing price pressure. At the same time, users are of course placing maximum demands regarding reli-ability, personal protection and productivity in connection with switchgear operation.

There is one thing you just have to rely on: smooth and safe operation of your system. Around the clock. Here, switchgear assemblies as points of intersection play a decisive role – and air-insulated switchgear concepts from our worldwide produc-tion locations offer the best solution with no doubt. As a pioneer for air-insulated switchgear we bring along 25 years of know-how in the development of switchgear and switching devices. Along with this, our manufacturing plants in all regions of the world ensure local added value and thus, permanent prox-imity to the customer, so that you can take full advantage of air- insulated technology: As insulating medium, air is available day and night, and withdrawable switchgear systems guarantee accessibility to all switchgear components at any time. With air-insulated switchgear from Siemens you are always on the safe side – our switchgear is type-tested for indoor installa-tion according to IEC 62271-200 or ANSI/IEEE C37.20.2. In this way you profit from our leading position as regards fulfillment of this new standard IEC 62271-200. Regardless of the fact that air-insulated switchgear from Siemens has always been a synonym for maximum personal and opera-tional safety as well as local added value.

Page 26: Modern_Construction_Catalogs[1].2215649

Keep everything going in your power supply system:

Air-insulated switchgear from Siemens – for sustainability, safety and efficiency

Increases productivityFunctions such as evidence of the making and breaking capac-ity for the built-in circuit-breakers and earthing switches – and even confinement of the arc to the respective compartment de-pending on the switchgear type – as well as designs equipped to meet maximum requirements with respect to the degree of protection provide uninterrupted operation and an appreciable increase of productivity.

Saves moneyThe compact design and the use of vacuum circuit-breakers pay off twice for the switchgear operator. On the one hand, build-ing costs can be reduced, and on the other hand, the mainte-nance-free design of the circuit-breakers enables continuous operation without expensive downtimes.

Peace of mindWith its sophisticated technology, a globally interconnected R&D network, a worldwide production and quality network and the fulfillment of all type and routine tests according to the re-quirements of the international standards without restrictions, air-insulated switchgear offers maximum peace of mind.

Saves livesAll air-insulated switchgear designs from Siemens are approved with internal arc classification IAC A FLR, loss of service continuity category LSC 2B, LSC 2A or LSC 1 depending on the switchgear type, as well as partition class PM. Thus they can be universally installed, fulfilling maximum requirements as regards personal protection.

Siemens – your partner on siteWe take care that you can “switch cleverly“. Combining innova-tion, experience and local added value. With comprehensive know-how, worldwide service – and profound understanding of your requirements in the most different regions due to local production capacity. Go and see for yourself!

Page 27: Modern_Construction_Catalogs[1].2215649

Local added value – systematically:

Worldwide production – complete processes – a quality standard

R&D headquarters in Germany concentrate international know-howAll global development activities are concentrated and controlled centrally: International development teams introduce the re-spective country-specific requirements in our R&D activities. A good basis for maximum development synergies, contributing to lean development cycles by means of optimal exchange of experience. High demands – in practical implementation:The D-CAD procedureDuring the development and production phase, the utilization of 3D-CAD software ensures perfect quality and reliability. The in-dividual technical data of your switchgear is transferred directly from the purchase order to the production department via the design department. Using innovative technologies we can offer a maximum of quality and flexibility in production – with short delivery times.

Local added value – country-specific flexibilityHundreds of Siemens employees manufacture our air-insulated switchgear type series in different regions worldwide. In this way we do not only ensure the local know-how for the require-ments varying from country to country, but also integrate expe-rience from other locations. Production processes are docu-mented in a comprehensible way – to reach the quality level you, as our customer, can expect in a fast, safe and reproduc-ible way.

Strict eyes – to assure the qualityOur very modern, accredited testing laboratories ensure the high quality of our air-insulated switchgear. Besides type and routine tests for the individual switchgear type series, continu-ous process-accompanying quality assurance according to ISO 9001 and 14001 is performed. Being associated with PEHLA and DAR, our testing laboratories have the status of independent test institutes.

Medium voltage – cleverly switched Gas-insulated switchgear: Compact, maintenance-free and climate-independent

Page 39: Modern_Construction_Catalogs[1].2215649

There is one thing you just have to rely on: Smooth and safe operation of your system. Around the clock. Here, switch-gear assemblies as points of intersection play a decisive role – and switchgear con-cepts from Siemens offer the best solu-tion with no doubt.

As a pioneer for gas-insulated switchgear we bring along 5 years of know-how, so that you can take full advantage of this technology – with a compact, main-tenance-free and climate-independent design. For lower ratings we also offer air-insulated switchgear type SIMOSEC with SF6 switch-disconnectors. The only decisive factor are your requirements.

With Siemens you are always on the safe side. Whether for secondary or for primary distribution switchgear – all our switchgear is already type-tested today for indoor installation according to IEC 671-00 (in main aspects also according to ANSI C37.0). In this way you profit from our leading position as regards fulfillment of this new standard. Regardless of the fact that Siemens switchgear has been a synonym for maxi-mum personal and operational safety.

We take care that you can “switch cleverly”. Combining innovation and experience. With comprehensive know-how, world-wide service – and profound understand-ing of your markets. Go and see for yourself!

For perfect operation of your system:

Page 40: Modern_Construction_Catalogs[1].2215649

High demands – in practical imple-mentation: The 3D CAD procedure

D CAD design tools provide for the precise implementation of quality and reliability for our switchgear in develop-ment and production. The technical data of your switchgear is transferred directly from the purchase order to the produc-tion department via the design depart-ment with mathematical precision. Using innovative technologies we can offer a maximum of quality and flexibility in production – with short delivery times.

Everything tailor-made:The laser cutting system

The use of CNC-controlled laser cutting systems guarantees the manufacture of precise, exact parts with a surface free of scratches – at a high cutting speed. Maximum material utilization is ensured by the programs generated by the NC nesting processor.

For surge-proof operation:Cast-resin part manufacture

Insulating parts made of cast resin guarantee the dielectric strength of high-voltage phases to earth. The complete production process of such parts – which are essential for switch-gear – is integrated in our production. The quality of these components is 100% routine-tested by means of X-ray, tightness, high-voltage and partial discharge tests.

Systematic quality – by innovative procedures, technologies and production processes

With six product families for the primaryand secondary distribution level, theSwitchgear Factory Frankfurt/Main has a top position on the world market for gas-insulated switchgear.

The reason is a distinct understanding of quality, reaching far beyond the certifica-tion according to DIN EN ISO 9001 and 14001. Thousands of switchgear assem-blies running reliably all over the world are an impressive proof for this.

Decades of experience in development, manufacture, quality and environmental management as well as in service sup-port the leading position of the factory – as a worldwide center of competence and leading production for medium-volt-age switchgear from Siemens.

Strict eyes: Type and routine tests as an integral part of quality assurance

Very modern testing laboratories ensurethe high quality of our products. Here, type and routine tests for the different switchgear types as well as continuous process-accompanying quality assurance according to ISO 9001 and 14001 are performed. Our accredited testing labo-ratories in Frankfurt/Main and Berlin are among the largest in the world.

Being associated with PEHLA, they have the status of independent test insti-tutes. Furthermore, our type tests are internationally accepted. For example, we take over the testing and certifica-tion of packaged substations from other manufacturers who do not have a test-ing laboratory of their own.

With standards to success:Assembly

Standards play an important part at the Switchgear Factory Frankfurt/Main. The sequence of a process is document-ed in a reproducible way – to guarantee that the quality level the customer ex-pects is reached in a fast, safe and re-producible way. For example, assembly: It is divided into clearly defined opera-tions and organized following the one-piece-flow principle.

Necessary tools are always ready to hand, parts and materials are supplied to the workplace – all this saves en-ergy, time and supports precision. Ac-cording to the push-pull principle, the subsequent process always controls the preceding process: For example, by the information that an operation has been completed or that material is required.

More precise, faster, tighter:The laser welding equipment

The application of laser welding tech-nology leads to maximum precision, fast throughput times and gas tight-ness. The electrical bushings of the stainless-steel vessels are welded in without seals – as well as the metal bellows for transmission of the operat-ing energies from outside the vessel to the switching devices located inside.

Everything tight, everything all right: Integral leakage detection system

“Sealed for life” is the target for each and every switchgear vessel. For this purpose, the vessel is evacuated to-gether with the test chamber and then filled separately with helium, which has a smaller molecular structure than SF6. If no escaping helium is detected, gas tightness is guaranteed for life. The helium gas is absorbed again, the switchgear vessel is refilled with SF6, and the filling socket is welded tight.

25 years of gas-insulated medium- voltage switchgear from Siemens

In 198 Siemens introduced a world nov-elty to the market: The first gas-insulated switchgear for medium voltage. Right from the beginning, this innovation has written a success story.

For us, this is a commitment for con- tinuous development: As a leader in technology we have been permanently redefining performance and economic efficiency for a quarter century – a process you, as the customer, benefit from. Even tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

Innovationby tradition

Milestones from a quarter century 1977Siemens brings the first vacuum circuit-breaker to market, setting new standards regarding the reachable number of op-erating cycles, necessary maintenance, small dimensions, reliability and environ-mental independence.

1982The first gas-insulated switchgear for the primary distribution level is available with the type designation 8DA10 and 8DB10. And for the secondary distribution level, Siemens offers the type 8DJ10 as the first hermetically welded, maintenance-free gas-insulated switchgear worldwide. This is the first switchgear that is extremely compact and climate-independent.

1985With 7SA50, Siemens was the first worldwide provider to introduce a micro-processor-based multifunction protection relay to the market, thus initiating the age of numerical protection and control systems.

1993As the first switchgear of its kind, 8DH10 switchgear for the secondary distribution level combines hermetically welded tech-nology and maintenance-free design with simple extensibility. In the same year, the first maintenance-free, hermetically welded switchgear appears on the prima-ry distribution level: NXPLUS C. Gas work for installation and extension is therefore a thing of the past.

2000Siemens offers sealed systems for the complete medium-voltage range – up to 40.5 kV, 40 kA, 4500 A.

2006Every gas-insulated switchgear from Siemens complies with the new switch-gear standards IEC 671-100 and -00.
